Microsoft Dynamics CRM Mobility

by on May 16th, 2012

Everywhere I go I see more and more people using their mobile devices to do “stuff” that they used to only be able to do on their laptops.  iPads, Androids, slates, tablets, extremely large phones are all out there and getting better and better.  I was even sitting in the airport and watching a grandmother text as fast as her teen-aged granddaughter and I thought to myself, “How many of these folks sitting in the airport waiting for their flight, are doing work on their device or just doing “stuff” (email, surfing, games)?”

Well, the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Product team is working on the “CRM Q2 2012 Service Update” which will include massive improvements and capabilities around mobility and Microsoft Dynamics CRM.  I wanted to share some of the information regarding “CRM Anywhere” which is the model Microsoft is trying to achieve as part of this service update.  Microsoft is making a major investment to develop a groundbreaking mobile solution that will support a wider variety of browsers.  The update will include a new cloud-based, cross-platform native mobile client for Windows Phone 7.5, iPad, iPhone, Android, and Blackberry devices called Microsoft Dynamics CRM Mobile.  This new release will also host the mobile configuration, administration, and security in the cloud to provide zero touch upgrades once the initial installation is complete.

Functionality will include the full breadth of features in Microsoft Dynamics CRM including dashboards.  This is great so you don’t have to install multiple apps to see all the different slices of your data on your device.  Another cool feature is that everything is administered centrally, so you publish once, no matter the number of different platforms may be being used in the field.  This is great!

The catch – isn’t there always one? :)

Microsoft Dynamics CRM Mobile is going to be provided to customers on a per user, per month basis similar to the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online subscription model.  Microsoft has slated initial pricing at approximately $30.00US.   Not too expensive for the benefit of a field force.  Close one deal in the airport and it will more than cover the costs for the year!

Please check back on the Perficient Microsoft Blog site for additional information and features that will be in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Q2 2012 Service Update.

SharePoint Internet, Intranet, Extranets at Gateway to Innovation

by on April 27th, 2012

Yesterday, at the Gateway to Innovation conference in Saint Louis, MO, two of our clients presented to an audience on how SharePoint specifically helped their organizations 1) grow and scale, and 2) collaborate and integrate data and processes.

Aaron Schmeerbauch of Cassidy Turley speaks at Gateway to Innovation 2012

Andrew Richards, Director of the Information Systems Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University presented a new external website developed on Microsoft SharePoint 2010 with the help of Perficient. Aaron Schmeerbauch, a project manager at Cassidy Turley, presented a SharePoint implementation designed to assist with internal collaboration as the firm grew. Here are the key points and highlights from their presentations, along with screenshots of the work performed with Perficient’s assistance and strategic guidance.

A New website for Washington University Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences

Richards began by addressing the needs he had identified with the old site. “We needed to connect worldwide with a good user experience for applicants.” The challenge: Applicants and alumni are scattered across the world.

Key Drivers/Challenges:

  • Site design and impression
  • Content organization and navigation
  • Site performance and site maintenance
  • University wide migration from Lotus Notes
  • Social media
  • Needed a Mobile-friendly piece

Additional Challenges:

  • Until the redesign, the website had primarily focused on the applicants but not other users. This new site also needed to properly serve content up easily to faculty, students and alumni for their needs as well.
  • Users complained about difficulty finding content, so a user experience review was imperative.
  • Quick links on left hand side were limited in number so they had to be generic in description. If someone came on the site looking for something specific, the couldn’t find it.
  • Not a good system for content management for the staff. Would have needed to go back to the provider to get the site expanded.

Perficient Came in to Engage:

  • UX practice at Perficient was leveraged to study the site and weigh in on the proposed redesign.
  • The team produced three different site layouts for the department to review and choose from.
  • Perficient wanted to put Wash U in a better light by focusing on the high quality of education at lower cost

The new site for Washington Univeristy's Division of Biology: http://dbbs.wustl.edu

What Perficient Did:

  • Refined user interface and information architecture
  • Enhanced CMS with SharePoint 2010
  • Expanded integration options with existing systems
  • Integrated single identity for authentication across Wash U
  • Provided out of the box mobile access

Microsoft named CRN 2012 BI & Collaboration Channel Champion

by on April 25th, 2012

Congratulations to Microsoft for being named 2012 Channel Champion for Business Intelligence Software by CRN. CRN provides news, analysis and perspective for VARs and Technology Integrators. Both SharePoint and SQL Server are Gartner Magic Quadrant technologies.

From the article by Rick Whiting

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) was tops in this year’s Business Intelligence Software category, besting competitors SAP (NYSE:SAP), IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Oracle (NSDQ:ORCL). But Microsoft’s margin of victory this year was much narrower than in 2011.

The company has been steadily gaining market traction with its business intelligence offerings, including such BI tools as PowerPivot in its Excel spreadsheet, PerformancePoint in SharePoint Server, and the ReportingServices and Analysis Services to the SQL Server database.

Microsoft outscored its rivals in overall technical satisfaction, including such criteria as product configurability or customization tools. That doesn’t surprise Mike Burger, Microsoft senior solutions architect at Perficient, a St. Louis-based Microsoft partner.

“We really use the entire Microsoft BI stack to tailor our solutions for our clients’ specific needs,” he said. “SharePoint integration and the BI semantic model in the upcoming SQL Server 2012 “have really enhanced [the technology's] ability to deliver business intelligence across a spectrum of users.”

Microsoft expects its momentum to continue this year with a new Apache Hadoop-based service for the Windows Azure cloud platform that customers can use to pull “big data” from multiple sources and build predictive analytics applications, said Michael Kiselman, senior product marketing manager.

Microsoft also outscored competitors for overall support satisfaction and in financial factors–sweeping all criteria in the latter, in fact. “The price point is one of the key selling factors we always bring up with clients,” said Burger.

Burger also praised Microsoft’s partner training and support, including the multiday SQL Server 2012 “ranger training.” “What’s great about that is it gives partners some lead time to work with the new technology,” he said. Microsoft also helps Perficient cover the costs of developing proof-of-concept systems. “It’s a fantastic way for us to get our foot in the door and make the customer not only comfortable with the technology, but working with us as well.”

Perficient’s ONC Certified solution for Stage 2 Meaningful Use & ACO reporting – Health BI also received a mention in CRN’s article on Microsoft’s Collaboration Software win. From the article which you can read in full here

“SharePoint, Microsoft’s collaboration platform, has been one of the company’s biggest-selling products since it debuted in 2001. Offering a number of capabilities, including document and Web content management, the server is also the core of Microsoft’s collaboration and social networking offerings.

“Social is hot right now,” said Jared Spataro, senior director of SharePoint product management, citing a recent Harris Interactive survey that found that 59 percent of businesses believe it’s necessary to integrate social networking with corporate IT networks. And while implementing social networking technology is a growing business for solution providers, Spataro said the real opportunity is developing change management services to handle the cultural and business process shifts.

For example, Perficient, a leading Microsoft solution provider partner, relies on SharePoint for a number of collaboration and analytical solutions for the health-care industry. Perficient’s Health BI Solution combines SharePoint with Microsoft’s SQL Server database to create its Health BI software, an analytics system that helps hospitals and other health-care organizations track performance metrics.”

ETL better and faster

by on March 19th, 2012

Having been in consulting for over 18 years, I am often asked by business owners or senior management how they can deliver solutions that are faster and better. They also want world-class products that captivate the customer, in addition to better predictability in the solutions delivered. I have found a way to have repeatable success with my clients by utilizing frameworks and templates that I have refined over the years. My method has led to many clients with an end product that has exceeded their expectations.

I am part of the Microsoft BI Practice and am currently delivering a framework to Perficient branches so they can do more with less. In the next few weeks, I will release a framework and template to a pilot branch. It will have an example built off of Adventure Works that has the following functionality for a SSIS/ETL project.

1)      SSIS BI Management Reporting
2)      Error Handling
3)      Logging for End-to-End traceability
4)      Auditing
5)      Configuration
6)      Test Driven Development (TDD)
7)      SSIS Template Project
8)      Enterprise Perficient SSIS database that contains above information for all of an enterprises’ SSIS projects. Currently, SQL Server 2012’s SSIS database is being reviewed to see what other information can be leveraged.  A future release of this framework will have ties into the metrics captured by 2012’s SSIS.
9)      A working example of the above functionality
10)   Supporting Documentation

With consistent delivery through templates, frameworks, and documentation, we will make solutions together that are more focused on the business problem, more powerful for the clients to manage in their IT asset portfolio, and have a lower cost for delivery. That is the win – win in the IT consulting world.

Computerworld Recognizes Perficient as a 2012 Honors Laureate

by on March 15th, 2012

I’m excited to share today’s announcement that Computerworld has recognized Perficient as a 2012 Computerworld Honors Laureate for our work with Texas Children’s Hospital. Perficient was one of 20 honorees in the Health category. From the Press Release

“Perficient was recognized for its innovative work with Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH). Perficient helped TCH implement a business intelligence technology solution, leveraging Microsoft technologies, that would give them the ability to not only use their data to increase financial efficiency and operational effectiveness, conduct innovative research and satisfy regulatory requirements, but also create an environment that allowed TCH to provide the best patient care in the most efficient and effective way possible.

“There’s no question technology plays a vital role in driving business forward. It ensures an organization’s ability to compete, innovate, communicate and thrive. What the Computerworld Honors Laureates so clearly demonstrate is technology’s role in moving society forward. Computerworld acknowledges and applauds the outstanding work being done by individuals and organizations that have successfully used technology to improve the quality of our lives and that of future generations,” said John Amato, vice president/publisher of Computerworld. “Computerworld is proud to name the 2012 class of Laureates and celebrate their initiatives benefiting society through the innovative use of IT.”

Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer had previously referenced Perficient’s work at Texas Children’s Hospital in a speech he gave in Houston, showing the human side of Health IT. Here’s what Mr Ballmer had to say

“One of our guys was telling me a story which I thought was fantastic that happened here locally, so I’ll share it with you. Lady in Kansas, a grandmother actually, finds out that her not-yet-born grandchild has some kind of fetal heart problem and says, what am I going to do about this? Starts searching around, and the only hospital that actually had both good systems to allow her to find them, and actually could demonstrate what their outcomes had been with in utero fetal heart surgery, was the Texas Children’s Hospital. They captured that information, they published it. They had it in a place where this grandmother in Kansas, doing her research on the Internet, using information published by TCH, she was able not only to tell her child, look I found these people, but it looks like they actually get very good outcomes. They did an in utero procedure on this mom here in Houston, and the success story of course is there, the baby is fine, has lived in a way that you just can’t imagine in a generation prior to information technology.

TCH is now getting referrals for these kinds of procedures based upon real outcomes. Very few healthcare institutions can actually prove to you, by the way, they have real outcomes. They don’t have the data and systems to support it. And yet TCH does. And hopefully we get a chance, that’s as dramatic a story as I frankly have ever heard about the use of our technology, but hope we get the chance to work with many of you on important stories for you.”

From today’s Press Release “Perficient is honored to be named a Computerworld 2012 Laureate for its work with Texas Children’s Hospital,” said Martin Sizemore, Perficient’s director of healthcare strategy. “As the pressure to manage population health increases, organizations must remind themselves they are first and foremost dealing with people. Through our work we were able to develop and implement a technology solution that helped TCH not only track operational efficiencies and manage costs, but most importantly, provide the quality of care that patients need to live longer, healthier lives.”

Microsoft Poised to Enhance Enterprise Social Business Solutions

by on March 14th, 2012

Mark Fidelman of harmon.ie wrote an article for Forbes today outlining Microsoft’s current position, in which they are poised for a launch into social business tools and solutions for the enterprise. He argues that Microsoft, with their business technology foothold in the enterprise, is best positioned to become a primary leader in the social business space.

Here are some key highlights from his post:

  • “At least 75% of the organizations surveyed have deployed or plan to implement a social solution to increase information sharing this year. Yet according to Gartner, through 2012, over 70% of these social business initiatives will fail. “
  • “So what does the Social Enterprise look like according to Microsoft? It is mainly comprised of four things: the cloud, social technologies, mobile and analytics.  Each helping to power a connected, contextual user experience where people getting things done is the focus – technology is NOT.”
  • “For Microsoft, Azure and Office 365 will power the vision, enabling companies to easily and cost effectively support the next generation knowledge worker.”

I noticed that Fidelman does not outline what specifically Microsoft will be now be offering in social business solutions beyond the solutions they’ve already created in cloud, big data and collaboration tools. But his article certainly makes me excited to see what comes next.

FINALLY, Microsoft Embraces Social — And It’s Going to be Big

Microsoft Dynamics Convergence – Houston next week!

by on March 13th, 2012

Hi All!!

Next week I am headed to Houston for Microsoft Dynamics Convergence which is the biggest customer conference Microsoft puts on for the Dynamics community.  This is where customers have the opportunity to hear about upcoming enhancements, customer success stories, network with other customers, and share ideas.  This year is packed with product briefings, best practices, and my favorite – roundtables, where customers and product team members discuss what works and what doesn’t.  It is always a great set of sessions!

I am also looking forward to this year’s 3 keynote addresses.  Retired General Colin Powell will speak on Monday, Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner will speak on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, President of the Microsoft Business Solutions Division, Kiril Tartarinov.  You can find more about them here.

I am going to try and blog every day to let you know what I’ve seen and heard, as well as what trends I see in the market.  Though my focus is on CRM, Microsoft Dynamics Convergence is all about the Dynamics family which also includes – Dynamics GP, Dynamics AX, Dynamics SL, and Dynamics NAV which are all ERP (financial) solutions provided by Microsoft.  My interest focuses on integration and interoperability as we often combine Dynamics CRM with one of those ERP packages when we are implementing solutions for our customers.

So please check in next week and see my posts!  I am also meeting with members of the Dynamics CRM product team to discuss enhancements and provide feedback from our Perficient customers.  Another big draw is the Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace Expo where I am looking forward to meeting with several of our Marketplace partners like Eventix and Scribe.

See you all next week!
