Open STSADM at any point in a Command Prompt

If you are like me you are probably tired of typing C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions12 whenever you want to perform an stsadm command. I am sure there is some good reason to keep this file so buried but I have not figured it out.

The other day when working with Mike Becker, which by the way is a wealth of great Microsoft knowledge, he had me add an Environmental Variable in the System Properties. So whenever you type stsadm, no matter what directory you are in, stsadm runs. This has already saved me considerable time. I will even be adding this to my MOSS Build Documents for future deployments. Anyhow, here are the details…

Right-click My Computer and go to Properties to open System Properties.

my computer properties

From the System Properties window go to the Advanced Tab. Click Environment Variables.

system properties

Under System Variables find Path and click on the Edit button.

Scroll to the end Variable Value and enter the following line;

;C:Progra~1Common~1Micros~1webser~112bin

You will have to open a new Command Prompt for the change to take affect. However, now you should be able to type stsadm in any location.
