Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is getting even more serious in our industry. Earlier this week, the company introduced its life sciences organization as Verily. It was previous known as Google Life Sciences. According to STAT, the new company name means “truly” or “certainly,” referencing Verily’s CEO and former chief scientific officer of LabCorp Andy Conrad’s words, “Only through the truth are we going to defeat Mother Nature.”
Rebranding and spinning off companies in life sciences isn’t new to the technology giant. In 2013, Google created Calico, a research and development company, run by the chairman and former CEO of Genentech, whose mission is to slow aging and counteract age‑related diseases.
