For the fourth consecutive year, Perficient has partnered with the Mark Cuban Foundation to offer free AI Bootcamps to underserved high school students across the United States. Held over the first three Saturdays of November, this initiative works to inspire the next generation of leaders in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, providing them with hands-on training and experience to succeed in the ever-evolving tech landscape.

 

Expanding Reach to Seven U.S. Cities

This year, we proudly expanded our partnership with the Mark Cuban Foundation by hosting AI Bootcamps in seven cities: Dallas, Houston, Detroit, St. Louis, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Fargo, North Dakota. The impact of this program has continued to grow each year, with more students seeking to participate in this hands-on exploration of AI tools and applications. More than 260 high school students applied to participate in a Perficient AI Bootcamp this year.

Participating students explored a broad range of AI concepts, including the ethical implications of AI systems. They examined concerns about fairness, transparency, privacy, and accountability in AI technologies, as well as the societal impacts of AI, such as biases in algorithms and potential consequences on employment and personal freedoms. This exploration gave students a deeper understanding of the need for responsible AI development and thoughtful consideration of its societal effects. One unique part of the curriculum was the ability for students to choose from specialized AI learning tracks such as healthcare, business development, and sports science, which allowed them to explore AI within areas of their own personal interest. As the program concluded, students used their newfound skills and worked in groups to present AI-based solutions to real-world challenges.

Empowering Students Through Mentorship

Throughout the AI Bootcamps, Perficient employees played a crucial role in helping students navigate both the technical and collaborative aspects of AI. More than 100 Perficient colleagues volunteered to be mentors at this year’s AI Bootcamps and guided students through the learning process. These mentors drew on their professional experiences to provide valuable insights into how AI is applied in real-world settings, helping students understand the practical uses of AI technology.

Along with providing technical expertise, mentors helped develop key soft skills to help students build camaraderie within their small groups. Working together on complex AI projects can be challenging, and Perficient mentors facilitated collaboration by encouraging teamwork and effective communication. They emphasized the importance of problem-solving, sharing ideas, and learning from one another to foster a cooperative environment.

Houston is so proud to be a 3rd-time host for the Mark Cuban AI boot camp. We continue to be blown away by how quickly these young people are at absorbing and adopting cutting-edge technology concepts. I always love witnessing their fast-paced collaboration and the creative and impressive capstone projects that emerge on the final day! It’s been a fun ride – I’m looking forward to next year!

Professionals from a variety of fields journeyed from places as far-flung as Eau Claire (and beyond!) to team up over three consecutive Saturdays. Together, they planned, mentored, and inspired the next generation of AI trailblazers across the Twin Cities region. It was a feast of innovation, teamwork, and—of course—candy-fueled creativity!

Perficient’s Giving Employee Resource Group (ERG) recently introduced the Perficient Gives Global Grants Program, which gives colleagues the opportunity to nominate charitable organizations from around the world to receive a $5,000 donation from Perficient. After carefully evaluating each nomination, Perficient’s Giving ERG leadership team selected the first five organizations to receive a donation. Last month, we announced Charity: Water as the first organization to receive a Perficient Global Grant. 

Today, we’re thrilled to announce the next two organizations receiving a $5,000 donation from Perficient: the Jessie Rees Foundation, nominated by Tara Vondran, Senior Project Manager, Southern California, and the Foundation for Excellence, nominated by Rajesh Ranga Rao, Technical Architect, Chennai. 

Spreading Joy to Children Fighting Cancer with the Jessie Rees Foundation  

The Jessie Rees Foundation believes that every child fighting cancer deserves joy, the opportunity to smile, and the encouragement to Never Ever Give Up (NEGU).

Founded by Jessie Rees, a 12-year-old girl who courageously fought cancer, Jessie’s family continues her mission to share hope by sending motivational and cheerful gifts, including JoyJars, to kids battling cancer.

Tara nominated the Jessie Rees Foundation because the organization and its mission are particularly impactful to her family. In 2019, Tara’s niece received a diagnosis of Leukemia. While the road to recovery was challenging, Jessie’s story was influential in inspiring her to never give up. Tara’s niece is now in remission, and Tara hopes to continue spreading joy to children in the hospital for many years. 

Tara first learned about the Jessie Rees Foundation nine years ago and has volunteered her time by stuffing JoyJars with toys, cards, beanies, and socks. She has even coordinated a volunteer event where Perficient colleagues created “Care Cards” full of hope and words of affirmation to help spread a touch of happiness to those who need it most.

“There’s so much that a kid goes through with cancer, and the Jessie Rees Foundation makes a difference,” said Tara. “Knowing the kids have a support system means the world, and receiving toys and care cards inspire them to never give up and continue the fight.” 

Each year, more than 400,000 children receive a cancer diagnosis. As of January 2024, the organization has sent more than 475,000 JoyJars to kids fighting cancer all over the world. Thanks to Tara’s nomination, Perficient’s donation will empower children with cancer to be courageous and understand that they are not alone.

Advancing STEM Education in Partnership with the Foundation for Excellence 

The Foundation for Excellence was founded with the mission to award college scholarships to low-income students pursuing education in engineering, medical, biopharmaceutical, and law programs in India. Through country-wide programming efforts, the Foundation for Excellence identifies people without necessary educational funding and provides them with resources to continue learning.  

The non-profit also offers all engineering scholars a curated training program for soft and technical skills, as well as an in-house mentorship program for professionals to connect with and guide first-generation learners as they embark on their professional journey.

Education is a cornerstone of India’s society. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the resources or financial support needed to achieve higher education. Through Rajesh’s nomination, we’re helping connect students with the tools they need to be successful.

“The Foundation for Excellence plays a pivotal role in offering scholarships to college students requiring financial assistance, thereby creating a difference by transforming the lives of students to pursue and achieve their dreams,” said Rajesh.

Rajesh has been involved with the Foundation for Excellence since 1998 when he received a scholarship from the organization to assist with his continued education and career growth. As someone who has personally benefitted from the work the Foundation for Excellence provides, Rajesh understands the importance of the organization’s mission on a deeper level. Inspired by that mission, Rajesh continues to pay it forward by making his own donations to the Foundation for Excellence to help others who aspire to further their professional skillset.  

For 29 years, the Foundation for Excellence has awarded more than 95,000 scholarships to students living in impoverished regions of India. Since 2022, the organization has supported more than 13,579 students pursuing education, with 4,851 people being first-time scholars. Thanks to Rajesh’s recommendation, Perficient and the Giving ERG will continue to help enable and advance STEM education across India.

Since 2021, our Giving Employee Resource Group (ERG) has inspired action and generosity while capturing and celebrating all the amazing ways we’re making a difference across the world.

Global Grants Program LogoEarlier this year, the Giving ERG introduced a new way colleagues could make a difference – the Perficient Gives Global Grants Program. Through the program, colleagues around the world can nominate their favorite charitable organization to receive a one-time $5,000 donation from Perficient. Any nonprofit organization that aligns with Perficient’s corporate giving pillars – advancing STEM education and improving health and well-being – can be nominated to receive a Perficient Gives Global Grant.

Nominations were held in April, with global colleagues nominating nearly 100 wonderful global organizations, and five were selected to each receive $5,000.

Charity WaterToday, we’re proud to announce the first recipient of a Perficient Gives Global Grant – Charity: Water – which was nominated by Renu Hall, a director out of Perficient’s Houston office.

Charity: Water’s Mission and Renu’s Passion for Ending the Water Crisis

Safe drinking water is much more than a basic human need. It’s the foundation for improved health, education, and economic opportunity. Charity: Water has been on a mission since 2006 to end the global water crisis. By partnering with experienced local organizations to build sustainable, community-owned water projects, Charity: Water has connected more than 18 million people in 29 countries to clean and safe drinking water.

Renu HallFor Renu, nominating Charity: Water for a Perficient Gives Global Grant came from her own personal experiences and seeing the need firsthand.

“I have a lot of passion for that organization, and hearing that they would be receiving this donation was pretty special,” said Renu. “I was born in Tanzania and grew up in Sub-Saharan Africa before moving to India and then the U.S. So, I grew up in developing nations, and one of the biggest struggles for these countries is bare necessities: sanitation, water, food, medicine. You see the effect of that in these countries and I grew up experiencing it.”

Charity: Water works with local partners to fund water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs for rural communities around the world. Once a local partner has been selected, Charity: Water works with them to evaluate existing water sources, terrain, and population to ensure they are funding the most appropriate solution for each community. After construction ends, Charity: Water continues to work with their local partners to monitor, evaluate, and maintain WASH programs, ensuring that each program operates sustainably for years to come.

Renu has supported Charity: Water through her own financial donations for years and says hearing the story of Charity: Water’s founder, Scott Harrison, is one aspect that initially inspired her to get involved. She noted President Jimmy Carter’s advocacy for global health and environmental concerns as another inspiration for making a difference.

“It is distressing to see a child’s future threatened or diminished by preventable disease. The rights to health services and to safe, clean, affordable water are fundamental to a life of dignity and are protected by international law. Yet millions of people die of water-related diseases annually, and millions more suffer needlessly. None of us should turn a blind eye to the shocking consequences of inadequate access to clean water and to sanitation.”

“Charity: Water’s work has a huge impact on communities all over the world, promoting health and vitality and reducing disease and decline, in areas where Perficient employees live and work,” said Renu.

Thanks to Renu’s nomination and Charity: Water’s fundraising model, 100% of Perficient’s donation will aid in the planning and implementation of sustainable water sources in rural areas around the world.

“The U.S. dollar can go a long way in developing nations to do so much with very little. The impact you can make with those dollars in those nations is remarkable. Whole communities and whole villages can be changed,” said Renu. “Charity: Water is doing life-saving work. People die from water-borne diseases in these countries, and it’s tragic to see how the basic necessity of access to clean water could save those lives.”

A lovely turn of events occurred recently when our office hosted Prakash Chembai, the esteemed vice president of our company. We honoured his promotion and held a lively town hall that day, which made it an exciting and unforgettable event for all those engaged.

The Townhall:

The day kicked off with a spirited town hall, providing an opportunity for employees to engage with our Vice President directly. The town hall served as a platform for open communication, where employees had the chance to ask questions, share insights, and gain valuable perspectives from our organisational leader. The interactive session fostered a sense of transparency and collaboration, reinforcing the strong bond within our professional community.

Celebration:

Adding a touch of warmth to the day, we celebrated the promotion of our vice president. The entire office came together to express gratitude and appreciation for his leadership. Decorations adorned the workspace, and the air was filled with laughter and camaraderie. The celebration showcased the tight-knit culture within our organisation, emphasising the importance of recognising and cherishing the personal milestones of our leaders.

Following the town hall meeting, we held a celebration after conducting an appreciation session to honour our outstanding employees for their significant accomplishments.. The festivities continued with a delicious lunch. The team gathered in a festive setting, enjoying a spread of delectable dishes. This informal setting provided a unique opportunity for employees to interact with the vice president on a more personal level, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

Diwali (or Deepavali – meaning “row of lights” in Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language) is the Indian “festival of lights”. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

Celebrations and observances vary depending on the region. For many people, Diwali honors the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The lights and lamps are said to help Lakshmi find her way into people’s homes, bringing prosperity in the year to come. In northern India, Hindus celebrate the return of Lord Rama and Sita to the city of Ayodhya, after defeating the evil king Ravana! In the region of Bengal people worship the goddess Kali, the destroyer of evil forces, during Diwali. And in the South, people celebrate Lord Krishna’s victory over the wicked king Narakaasura. Though primarily a Hindu festival, variations of Diwali are also celebrated by adherents of other faiths.

But Diwali is not just about lights and legends – it is a time to have fun with friends and family. People decorate their homes with rangolis (an art form in which patterns are created on the floor and decorated with colorful powders, sand, flour or flowers), illuminate their homes with oil lamps and lanterns, wear new clothes, enjoy fireworks, make delicious sweets and snacks and exchange gifts with friends, family and neighbors.

Diwali isn’t just a popular festival in India, but it has become one of the most recognized and celebrated Indian festival outside of India as well!

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Natalie Wright to learn more about her experience at Perficient. Natalie shared how she feels supported by the team and culture at Perficient, and how she innovates within and outside of her role on the email marketing team. Keep reading to learn more!

How long have you been with Perficient and what roles have you held?

I was initially at Perficient for about two and a half years. I was on the Partner Marketing team aligned to our Microsoft, AWS, and Twilio partnerships. I then shifted roles into email marketing to explore my interest in digital marketing. An opportunity presented itself at a different company before I ultimately decided to return to Perficient in October 2022. Now, I am an associate email marketing manager on the Corporate Marketing team.

The main reason I came back to Perficient was the culture. The incredible support I receive at Perficient allows me to do my best work. The team helps keep me sharp in my role, and I can learn so much from all the other marketers. There’s always someone I can reach out to if I don’t know the answer or if I need support in areas that aren’t my specialty. True collaboration and the motto, “if one of us shines, we all shine,” are engrained in our culture at Perficient.

Can you describe a typical day in the life of an associate email marketing manager?

My role mainly consists of managing our Pardot database, creating and sending emails, making sure we’re compliant with data and privacy laws on a global scale, and targeting the right people at the right times with our emails.

My team is responsible for creating emails that are sent externally from Perficient. The most common types of emails are prospective client facing emails and emails to our partners. Additionally, internal emails that are specific to business units or practice areas run through my team as well. Creating customizable emails that our Perficient sellers can leverage for direct client outreach is also an important part of my role.

What is your favorite aspect of your role?

My favorite part is getting to analyze and evaluate processes. I appreciate when processes run smoothly. It’s exciting to look at things we’ve always done and see if there’s a better, more efficient way to do them. Asking questions and using data to drive and update our processes is crucial. Especially with privacy laws changing and Perficient expanding into new countries, it’s important that we continue to evaluate and evolve.

Are you a part of any Culture Groups at Perficient?

I’m a member of the St. Louis Social and Cultural Committee, and I help plan events that continue fostering our amazing office culture. We host monthly events such as happy hours and lunch meet and eats. We also have annual traditions like a chili cookoff and a Thanksgiving potluck! We recently hosted a reception to celebrate our contributions and efforts during Hunger Action Month to help our community stomp out food insecurity.

Whether big or small, how do you make a difference for our clients, colleagues, communities, or teams?

I make a difference by enabling our marketers to succeed and reach their campaign goals. I make the email team’s capabilities known so that marketers can in turn better support their subject matter experts, partners, and stakeholders. Educating the broader marketing team about what resources they have available to them and how our email team can support, such as sharing best practices, analytics education, and optimizing campaigns, are overarching ways I make a difference at Perficient.

What are you proudest accomplishments, personally and professionally?

Personally, about four years ago, I started getting more into health and fitness. I joined a community and focused on consistency. Over time, I noticed a huge difference in my strength, confidence, and overall health. Professionally, I’m proud of building a solid team structure. Being able to build and support a team that runs smoothly and delivers for our stakeholders has been very rewarding.

What advice would you give to colleagues who are starting their career with Perficient? 

The advice I give to everyone is don’t be afraid to ask questions. Even if you think it’s silly or obvious, it’s probably not. I would also say try to give yourself some grace when you’re going through the onboarding process. There is a lot to learn, but eventually things will click. You will build up confidence, so just be patient.

If you had to define yourself using one Perficient value, which would it be and why? (People, Pride, Clients, Innovation, Integrity, Collaboration) 

I would say innovation. Mistakes are bound to happen, but innovation often stems from mistakes. It’s about what happens after those mistakes and the lessons learned that matter the most. If you’re okay with making the same mistakes over and over, you’ll never improve. So, I always try to reassess and reevaluate. This helps me and the team move forward and do better the next time.
