To be successful with your data, you need to know if your company is focused on reporting the data or analyzing the data for intelligent decisions. I’ll lay out two fictional organizational examples. Think about which one your company resembles and which one you would like it to resemble. One represents a company that primarily uses data in a reporting capacity while the other uses data intelligently in more analytical capacity.
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition
The Reporting Company (TRC), is a huge corporation that has 5,000 employees and has facilities across the globe. They produce Type Writers as their main line of business. Each week they have a status call with different departments that can last an hour or more. They have regional status calls with their sales teams that last a few hours each month. And they have vendor/supplier calls about once a week to ensure inventory levels are sufficient. The attendees of the meetings are sent a spreadsheet with lots of numbers and data to review. Unfortunately, when the calls are finished, the people usually end up taking the same action with the data as they did the meeting before.
The Future of Big Data
With some guidance, you can craft a data platform that is right for your organization’s needs and gets the most return from your data capital.
Each report takes a team of people compiling, filtering, joining, and saving the reports out on a network share before anyone can use it. By the time anyone sees a report that is shared out, the data is at least a day old. Also, some reports are recreated at a later date because errors have been found in the originals but most people have no idea data has been corrected.
Automated and Efficient
The Intelligent Company (TIC), is also a huge company. They have 10,000 employees with facilities across the globe. They produce important medical testing equipment that is shipped to hospitals for early detection of cancers. This company rarely has regularly scheduled calls to go over reports. They have all their data online 100% of the time and can access it from the ease of their mobile device. They only see the data they need to see and only for the important KPIs that matter to the business. When a KPI, like inventory numbers, get out of range, they are alerted immediately. In the alerts, they are given steps to correct the issue in an email or text. Each department can collaborate with each other through the dashboard. They discuss wins, losses, and document important information regarding the KPIs from their mobile device while they are on the road meeting new clients.
All their data is imported throughout the day in near real-time. Once data is ready a few seconds after being imported, it is available to all the users in Domo. Since no one has to build repetitive reports, teams can analyze the data for trends. They can also answer more in-depth questions surrounding their data to help optimize their business.
Two Peas in a Pod
Clearly two different ways of handling data. One is shuffling it around while the other is using it! What if I told you that The Reporting Company could be transformed into a data-driven, cloud-based organization in a fraction of the time they spent getting their current system online?
