It’s the week before Labor Day, but the world of social media is certainly not resting yet. I lot went on this week, so let’s jump in:
Facebook Contests No Longer Require an App
Facebook has a lot of rules when it comes to contests. The one that has always been a challenge for businesses is that you were required to use an app in order to run a contest. That all changed this week. Now, you can run a contest on your page without having to be a social media guru. Here’s a quick summary of the new rules:
- You can now collect entries by having users post on your page or comment on your post.
- You can collect entries by having users message your page.
- Likes can now be a voting mechanism.
So, if you want to run contests on your Facebook page, there’s an app for that, but you don’t have to use it.
Twitter Aquires Trendrr
Trendrr has a product called Curatorr which allows TV networks to sort through social posts via visual streams. This union will allow them to identify high-quality tweets that they may want to retweet or feature on-screen. This acquisition further solidifies the growing relationship between TV and Twitter and leverages the power of the second screen.
In the near future, expect to see a lot more integration between Twitter and TV.
Facebook Shared Albums
To further develop the community relationship of Facebook, you are now able to create shared photo albums. If you go to a family reunion or a special event, all attendees can now add photos to the same album. If you are ready to get started, just follow these instructions.
Note: Shared albums are only available for personal profiles, not for business pages.
Pinterest / Fashion Week Collaboration
New York’s Fashion Week is right around the corner and they have decided to use Pinterest to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look. There are over 80 boards already posted that will feature over 100 designers. This collaboration is not just about the popularity of fashion, but of the growing influence that Pinterest has on shoppers. This is one small step for the fashion industry, but a giant leap for Pinterest as a marketing channel.
Twitter Steps into E-Commerce
Twitter just hired ex-Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard as it’s Head of Commerce. This hire is the first step in creating a funnel that will convert tweets to sales. Social Media is growing up and we should expect to see more sales opportunities for all types of businesses.
And a Few Crumbs…
Facebook has it’s own nail polish color, “Social Butterfly Blue.”
Jay Z is debuting his new single exclusively on Facebook for 24 hours only. Click quick or it will be gone.
Twitter added a blue vertical line to track conversations on Twitter.
Facebook wants to use your profile picture for photo recognition.
You can now add gif’s to Facebook with this tool.
