AWS Named as Public Cloud Storage Leader

Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to receive high marks for its focus on innovation and capability. Fresh off being named an IaaS leader, AWS has also been recently named as a leader in research firm Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for public cloud storage services.

Public cloud storage is infrastructure as a service (IaaS) that provides block, file and/or object storage services delivered through various protocols. The services are stand-alone but often are used in conjunction with compute and other IaaS products. Priced on capacity, data transfer, and requests, the services provide on-demand storage and are often self-provisioned.

AWS solutions considered in this category include S3 (object storage), Glacier (cold storage), Elastic Block Store (EBS), Elastic File System, Snowball (data transport), and Snowmobile (data transport).

According to Gartner, AWS leads for the following reasons:

  • Market Reaction: Amazon S3 is the largest public-cloud-based object storage service as measured by data under management. According to Gartner, AWS has more insight than leading competitors and its ability to react to the market and build solutions ahead of the market forms the basis for its overall competitive strength.
  • Standard Setting: According to Gartner, AWS sets the boundaries in the market for public cloud storage services by which all other vendors operate and their innovations are frequently replicated. Gartner also believes that AWS has the most innovative capabilities even if it isn’t the cheapest available option.
  • Product Maturity: Finally, Gartner believes AWS has the most mature set of capabilities for edge-based computing and migrating large datasets to the public cloud securely and easily. Snowmobile and Snowball are lauded for their secure transport – important especially at a time when data breaches are on the rise.

In all, Amazon’s latest earnings and continued market leadership remain strong as we head into the fall quarter. As organizations continue to create data at a breakneck pace, AWS will continue to be an attractive solution of consideration.
