Stock symbols remind me of the website domains. If you have something easy to remember, short, and reflective of your business, you’re golden. Even if you just own a great domain, without an actual business, there’s a slight chance you can strike it rich. Remember all those domain names being sold for crazy prices? Insurance.com $35.6M? VacationRentals.com for $35M? iCloud.com for $6M?
While symbols aren’t bought and sold like domains, and it’s debatable whether they actually have an effect on stock price or even company image, they are inevitably an extension of your brand. And, hopefully, some serious thought was put into choosing one.
It’s also worth noting that sometimes the impact of a symbol (and possibly a company name) is, unfortunately, something beyond our control. That said, if a company changes their name, they can also change their symbol. There’s still hope for one unnamed company!
