Digital Transformation: Understanding Where You Are

PeopleGraffiti

Digital transformations are journeys, not destinations. Adopting a means of modernizing the systems used to create, deliver and sustain meaningful customer experiences, and at the same time ensuring the company is attuned to its most digitally savvy customers, takes time and determination. A clear digital vision shows everyone in the company the path toward constant revitalization and renewal.

The path has two levels: one populated by companies that choose to pursue excellent customer experiences, and another with companies that prefer harnessing operational excellence. At the beginning, one of four institutional traits becomes apparent:

DigitalExcellence-PreyvsPredator

DIGITAL CONNECTOR: Those companies that are learning to provide great customer experiences through digital tools and services alongside their products and services

DIGITAL OPERATOR: Those companies that are learning how to satisfy their customers through operational excellence

DIGITAL PREDATOR: Those companies that harness both traits, change the business value in many ways, and become masters in the digital domain

DIGITAL PREY: Those companies unable to evolve or who resist evolving until it is too late

Understanding where your organization is requires an honest assessment to identify your strengths and gaps. “If you’re going to create that big customer experience … you must understand how technology is going to enable that and where you have gaps or have strengths that you can leverage. Be willing to take that deeper technical assessment to get there.” – Michael Porter, Managing Principal, Strategic Advisors Consulting at Perficient
