Software Development Trends for 2017

The popularization of DevOps in 2017 opened a completely new world for technology companies looking to innovate. The wide availability of microservices, APIs, and cloud automation technologies not only accelerates the path to innovation but also creates numerous opportunities to capitalize on industries that have long stayed stagnant.

Though many of our customers reside in the healthcare, financial services, life sciences, automotive, and retail industries, we are always looking to expand outward and bring our know-how to new industries. As January concludes and we make our way towards the middle of the first quarter of 2017, it’s time to consider what other industries can be positively influenced by new software development methodologies.

Let’s dream a little:

  • Government: Much of what runs in the government are legacy systems that go as far back as 40 years ago. As technology refreshes become more commonplace and the need to connect systems becomes more important, expect DevOps methodologies to come front and center, further connecting citizens and the leaders that govern them.
  • Mobile: 2017 promises to be the year of augmented and virtual reality, with numerous handset carriers now shipping their devices with the necessary hardware to bring us to artificial worlds. With networks increasing in speed and supported cloud technologies as abundant as ever, we expect the use cases to be aplenty, spanning everything from healthcare to education to transportation.
  • Automotive: Speaking of transportation, the self-driving car has arrived and with it, an abundance of software that promises to turn the travel experience upside down. From entertainment systems to productivity, engineers will have their hands full keeping software updated and secure from hackers.
  • Retail: While shoppers continue to flock online for lower prices and the ability to avoid human contact, retailers now find themselves in a bind. The rise of new software development best practices ultimately gives retailers a chance to personalize their in-store and online experiences as business leaders realize the ineffectiveness of one-size-fits-all solutions. Look to innovations in mobile and the Internet of Things (IoT) to drive this area of growth.
  • Social Good: Social causes are always front and center in our daily lives, be it refugee crises abroad or hunger and homelessness at home. For nonprofits, 2017 is not only the time to tell a broader story, but have that story supported by data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, all while being at the front and center of our communications tools. As we hit the end of the decade, the best nonprofits will find ways to combine technology and stories for the greatest outcomes.
