“Powerful technologies require equally powerful ethical guidance.” (Bostrom, N. Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies. Oxford University Press, 2014).

The ethics of using artificial intelligence depend on how we apply its capabilities—either to enhance learning or to prevent irresponsible practices that may compromise academic integrity. In this blog, I share reflections, experiences, and insights about the impact of AI in our environment, analyzing its role as a creative tool in the hands of developers and as a challenge within the academic context.

Between industry and the classroom

As a Senior Developer, my professional trajectory has led me to delve deeply into the fascinating discipline of software architecture. Currently, I work as a Backend Developer specializing in Microsoft technologies, facing daily the challenges of building robust, scalable, and well-structured systems in the business world.

Alongside my role in the industry, I am privileged to serve as a university professor, teaching four courses. Three of them are fundamental parts of the software development lifecycle: Software Analysis and Design, Software Architecture, and Programming Techniques. This dual perspective—as both a professional and a teacher—has allowed me to observe the rapid changes that technology is generating both in daily development practice and in the formation of future engineers.

Exploring AI as an Accelerator in Software Development

One of the greatest challenges for those studying the software development lifecycle is transforming ideas and diagrams into functional, well-structured projects. I always encourage my students to use Artificial Intelligence as a tool for acceleration, not as a substitute.

For example, in the Software Analysis and Design course, we demonstrate how a BPMN 2.0 process diagram can serve as a starting point for modeling a system. We also work with class diagrams that reflect compositions and various design patterns. AI can intervene in this process in several ways:

  • Code Generation from Models: With AI-based tools, it’s possible to automatically turn a well-built class diagram into the source code foundation needed to start a project, respecting the relationships and patterns defined during modeling.
  • Rapid Project Architecture Setup: Using AI assistants, we can streamline the initial setup of a project by selecting the technology stack, creating folder structures, base files, and configurations according to best practices.
  • Early Validation and Correction: AI can suggest improvements to proposed models, detect inconsistencies, foresee integration issues, and help adapt the design context even before coding begins.

This approach allows students to dedicate more time to understanding the logic behind each component and design principle, instead of spending hours on repetitive setup and basic coding tasks. The conscious and critical use of artificial intelligence strengthens their learning, provides them with more time to innovate, and helps prepare them for real-world industry challenges.

But Not Everything Is Perfect: The Challenges in Programming Techniques

However, not everything is as positive as it seems. In “Programming Techniques,” a course that represents students’ first real contact with application development, the impact of AI is different compared to more advanced subjects. In the past, the repetitive process of writing code—such as creating a simple constructor public Person(), a function public void printFullName() or practicing encapsulation in Java with methods like public void setName(String name) and public String getName()—kept the fundamental programming concepts fresh and clear while coding.

This repetition was not just mechanical; it reinforced their understanding of concepts like object construction, data encapsulation, and procedural logic. It also played a crucial role in developing a solid foundation that made it easier to understand more complex topics, such as design patterns, in future courses.

Nowadays, with the widespread availability and use of AI-based tools and code generators, students tend to skip these fundamental steps. Instead of internalizing these concepts through practice, they quickly generate code snippets without fully understanding their structure or purpose. As a result, the pillars of programming—such as abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism—are not deeply absorbed, which can lead to confusion and mistakes later on.

Although AI offers the promise of accelerating development and reducing manual labor, it is important to remember that certain repetition and manual coding are essential for establishing a solid understanding of fundamental principles. Without this foundation, it becomes difficult for students to recognize bad practices, avoid common errors, and truly appreciate the architecture and design of robust software systems.

Reflection and Ethical Challenges in Using AI

Recently, I explained the concept of reflection in microservices to my Software Architecture students. To illustrate this, I used the following example: when implementing the Abstract Factory design pattern within a microservices architecture, the Reflection technique can be used to dynamically instantiate concrete classes at runtime. This allows the factory to decide which object to create based on external parameters, such as a message type or specific configuration received from another service. I consider this concept fundamental if we aim to design an architecture suitable for business models that require this level of flexibility.

However, during a classroom exercise where I provided a base code, I asked the students to correct an error that I had deliberately injected. The error consisted of an additional parameter in a constructor—a detail that did not cause compilation failures, but at runtime, it caused 2 out of 5 microservices that consumed the abstract factory via reflection to fail. From their perspective, this exercise may have seemed unnecessary, which led many to ask AI to fix the error.

As expected, the AI efficiently eliminated the error but overlooked a fundamental acceptance criterion: that parameter was necessary for the correct functioning of the solution. The task was not to remove the parameter but to add it in the Factory classes where it was missing. Out of 36 students, only 3 were able to explain and justify the changes they made. The rest did not even know what modifications the AI had implemented.

This experience highlights the double-edged nature of artificial intelligence in learning: it can provide quick solutions, but if the context or the criteria behind a problem are not understood, the correction can be superficial and jeopardize both the quality and the deep understanding of the code.

I haven’t limited this exercise to architecture examples alone. I have also conducted mock interviews, asking basic programming concepts. Surprisingly, even among final-year students who are already doing their internships, the success rate is alarmingly low: approximately 65% to 70% of the questions are answered incorrectly, which would automatically disqualify them in a real technical interview.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence has become increasingly integrated into academia, yet its use does not always reflect a genuine desire to learn. For many students, AI has turned into a tool for simply getting through academic commitments, rather than an ally that fosters knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking. This trend presents clear risks: a loss of deep understanding, unreflective automation of tasks, and a lack of internalization of fundamental concepts—all crucial for professional growth in technological fields.

Various authors have analyzed the impact of AI on educational processes and emphasize the importance of promoting its ethical and constructive use. As Luckin et al. (2016) suggest, the key lies in integrating artificial intelligence as support for skill development rather than as a shortcut to avoid intellectual effort. Similarly, Selwyn (2019) explores the ethical and pedagogical challenges that arise when technology becomes a quick fix instead of a resource for deep learning.

Explicit vs Implicit – Your Team Can’t Read Minds https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/11/25/explicit-vs-implicit-communication/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/11/25/explicit-vs-implicit-communication/#respond Tue, 25 Nov 2025 14:11:51 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=388603

We’ve all been there. Parents rushing out the door yelling, “Time to go!” Everyone piles into the car only to realize one kid forgot their jacket and the other never combed their hair. Frustrating! But where you feel frustration lies opportunity. An opportunity to communicate better by being explicit with our desires instead of implicit.

The same thing happens at work. You’re in a meeting and the key stakeholder says, “We should really do this thing better.” Sounds like action, right? But it is not! “we should” is a slippery slope because no one owns it. It sounds like progress, but it’s really just wishful thinking.

Implicit Statements

People, and even entire cultures, communicate in different ways. Some people are extroverted, others introverted. Where some are playful, others are serious.

While it’s far from universal, most people I’ve worked with lean toward implicit communication, especially in verbal conversations. And this is a problem. Implicit statements create confusion in projects, relationships, and life – regardless of your natural tendencies.

Many assume that being explicit sounds bossy or demanding. In reality, explicit communication isn’t controlling, it’s clarifying!

Why Implicit Communication Fails

Consider a statement like: “We need to do better at communicating.” Sounds clear and to the point, right? But it’s not. It certainly is short, polite, feels collaborative, and suggests improvement. But let’s break it down:

  • “we” = Undefined responsibility. It sounds like teamwork, which is great in theory, but once the meeting ends, each person assumes “we” means someone else.
  • “need to” = Wishful thinking. Why do we need to? What happens if we don’t? What if it takes a year or two?
  • “do better” = Lack of expectation. People don’t share the same mental model. One person thinks 10% better, another imagines 10x better. And then there’s that one guy who thinks, “We’re fine. No changes needed.
  • “at communicating” = Vague. Are we talking about meetings? What about in emails? Or maybe they mean documentation, or work item ticket comments. What exactly isn’t working well right now?

Implicit language feels soft and nice, but it leaves too much room for interpretation and disconnect.

Explicit Directions

I earned my Eagle Scout rank when I was 16 years old. Those lessons have stuck with me through the years, and now that I’m a parent I’m relearning them as my kids go through Scouting. Recently, I sat in on a First Aid merit badge class with my youngest son, and the difference between implicit and explicit communication was made abundantly clear.

Picture an accident scene. A take-charge bystander shouts, “Someone call 911!” This sounds urgent, but it’s dangerously vague. Who is “someone”? Each second after an accident is critical, where uncertainty can cost lives. What if a dozen people nearby end up calling 911 at once? This is not good.

Instead, emergency preparedness training teaches us to be specific: “Sam, call 911!” Or, if you don’t know their name, point to them, make eye contact, even touch their shoulder and say, “You need to call 911!” Explicit directions save time, prevent confusion, and get results.

Why Explicit Communication Succeeds

Explicit communication gets things done. If tasks aren’t clearly assigned, nothing happens. That’s why project managers use RACI charts. These spell out who’s responsible and accountable, as well as who should be consulted and informed.

Being explicit creates a shared vision, prevents rework, and shortens timelines. When you leave details up to interpretation, someone will spend days perfecting something you didn’t want. We’ve all been there: you follow vague direction, deliver what you think is perfect, and then redo everything because expectations weren’t aligned.

Clear expectations reduce frustration. When two parties are upset, it’s almost always because something was left unsaid earlier. Even the smallest misunderstanding can spiral into an emotional mess.

6 Practical Communication Tips

  1. Replace Vague Language – Be specific and targeted. Instead of, “We should update the deck.” Say, “Tara, update the deck with our new capabilities slides by end of day Thursday.
  2. Assign Ownership – Make it clear who is responsible. Example: “Alex, we need you to take lead on this.
  3. Include Timeframes – Set expectation or urgency. Instead of, “We need to have this ASAP.” Try, “Jane, at the very latest we need a final draft by noon on Tuesday. Sooner is better.
  4. Provide Context – Explain the “why” for relevance. Example: “Bill, the new component has to be built and tested by end of month so that it can be in production ahead of the new regulations taking affect.
  5. Confirm Understanding – Restate the desire and align. Instead of, “Abbey tells us that she’ll need 40 hours for this.” Rephrase it for confirmation like, “Abbey, you said you need 40 hours for this, so I think that means you need a week, right?
  6. Reiterate Assignments & Next Steps – End communications with a concise action plan. Example: “Next steps will be Todd getting legal approval by end of week, and then Sarah getting VP signatures by next Wednesday.

Conclusion

Be clear. Be concise. Be explicit.

People aren’t mind readers! Drop the belief that being direct is a negative personality trait. It’s not bossy, it’s simply good communication.

Even if you’re emailing someone who “gets it,” think about what happens if that email is forwarded to someone else. Will the next person understand what you mean? Explicit communication isn’t just for now, it’s for anyone who might read it or hear it later.

Your Homework: Reach out today to that friend that always says, “We should do lunch sometime,” but you never do. This time, be explicit:

Hey, do you have time for lunch in the next couple weeks?

Bonus Points: Be intentional with it. Schedule your priorities.

Would you be opposed to me putting a recurring monthly lunch on your calendar?

……

What I Wish I Knew Before Entering the Tech Industry https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/10/29/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-entering-the-tech-industry/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/10/29/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-entering-the-tech-industry/#respond Wed, 29 Oct 2025 15:01:40 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=387757

Entering the tech industry was a thrilling leap into the unknown. As a Technical Consultant today, I often look back and think about the things I wish someone had told me before I started. If you’re just beginning your journey in tech, here are some insights that might help you navigate it more smoothly.

1. It’s Not Just About Coding

Tech isn’t only about writing code. While coding is important, the real value often lies in understanding business problems and crafting solutions. Communication, collaboration, and strategic thinking are just as vital as technical skills.

2. Learning Never Stops

Technology evolves fast. New tools, frameworks, and best practices emerge constantly. I wish I had embraced continuous learning earlier. Whether it’s online courses, documentation, or hands-on experimentation—staying curious is essential.

3. Soft Skills Matter More Than You Think

Being technically strong is great, but being able to explain your ideas, work in teams, and manage expectations is what truly makes a difference. Soft skills like empathy, listening, and adaptability are game-changers.

4. Imposter Syndrome Is Real—And Normal

In the beginning, I often felt like I didn’t belong. Over time, I realized that many others feel the same. Growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Ask questions, seek feedback, and keep learning.

5. Networking Opens Doors

I used to think networking was only for salespeople. But building connections with peers, mentors, and industry professionals has opened up opportunities and helped me grow. Don’t hesitate to reach out and engage with your community.

6. Documentation Is Your Best Friend

Whether it’s code, configurations, or processes—documenting your work is invaluable. It saves time, helps others, and improves collaboration. I wish I had started this habit earlier.

7. Burnout Is Real—Balance Is Essential

Tech can be demanding. Long hours and constant learning can lead to burnout. I’ve learned to prioritize mental health, take breaks, and set boundaries. A well-rested mind is far more productive.

Final Thoughts

The tech industry is full of opportunities and challenges. While I’ve learned a lot, I know there’s still much more to discover. If you’re just starting out, remember: it’s okay not to know everything. Stay curious, be kind to yourself, and enjoy the journey.

Perficient Hyderabad Diwali Event 2025 https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/10/22/perficient-hyderabad-diwali-2025/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/10/22/perficient-hyderabad-diwali-2025/#respond Wed, 22 Oct 2025 11:25:01 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=387911

Perficient Hyderabad Diwali 2025 brought the office to life with bright lights, joyful traditions, and strong team spirit. From colourful decor to fun games, every part of the office reflected festive cheer and togetherness.

People across India celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with happiness and traditions. If you’d like to know more, visit Wikipedia to explore how Diwali inspires celebrations across the country.

Kicking Off

To begin the day, we held our monthly town-hall. During this session, teams shared recent wins, discussed updates and aligned on upcoming goal. As a result, the mood was upbeat and set  the tone for the celebration.

Decor Highlights

Soon after, the office transformed into a Diwali wonderland. A bright pookolam welcomed everyone at the entrance, made with fresh flowers and glowing diyas. Additionally, streamers and decorative lights added charm to every corner. The decor wasn’t just beautiful – it showed the creativity and spirit our teams bring to work.

Sweet Treats, Sweeter Smiles

To make the day even sweeter, chocolates were shared across teams. This small gesture brought smiles and lifted everyone’s mood. After all, it’s often the little things that make celebrations special.

Later, everyone gathered for festive lunch that featured a mix of traditional dishes and crowd favourites. The shared meal gave teams a chance to relax, connect and enjoy the flavours of season together.

Dressing Up for Occasion

Meanwhile, employees arrived in their festive best. Sarees, kurtas, sherwanis and lehengas filled the office with colour and elegance. It was heartwarming to see everyone embrace the spirit of Diwali and celebrate our diverse traditions.

Games, Laughter and Team Bonding

Later in the day, the office bussed with light-hearted activities. Fun and memory games sparked laughter and friendly competition. Consequently, it was refreshing break from routine and helped teams bond more closely.

Capturing the Joy

Naturally, we couldn’t let the day end without capturing the memories. Teams posed for group photos in front of the beautiful backdrops. These snapshots are now part of tour shared story – a reminder of that joy we create when we come together.

Diwali at the office wasn’t just a celebration. It was a moment to pause, connect, and appreciate the light we bring into each other’s lives. Looking ahead, here’s to many more festivals filled with warmth, unity and sparkle!

Embracing Compassion and Well-Being on World Mental Health Day https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/10/10/embracing-compassion-and-well-being-on-world-mental-health-day/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/10/10/embracing-compassion-and-well-being-on-world-mental-health-day/#comments Fri, 10 Oct 2025 14:50:35 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=387769

Mental health conditions impact billions of people around the world, with one in five U.S. adults experiencing mental illness each year. No matter the location or background, embracing and adopting strong awareness around mental health advocacy can help people around the world cope with the stresses presented in life. Observed annually during the first week of October, Mental Illness Awareness Week unites communities around the world to raise awareness and fight the stigma around mental health conditions.

No one should face these challenges alone. Recognized on October 10, World Mental Health Day reinforces the awareness week’s message while serving as a powerful global reminder that mental and emotional well-being deserves our attention, care, and action. Perficient is proud to support the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, to make a difference in building better lives for people living with mental illness.

What Is Mental Illness?

Mental illness affects how people think, feel, and interact—and its impact often reaches far beyond the individual. Even for those not personally experiencing mental illness, like family, friends, and communities, understanding common symptoms and knowing how to offer support can make a meaningful difference.

Recognizing early signs such as persistent sadness, excessive worry, changes in sleep or appetite, and social withdrawal can help connect someone to the care they need. In more serious cases, symptoms can involve hallucinations, delusions, or thoughts of self-harm. Understanding expected behaviors and responding with empathy is key to breaking stigma and supporting recovery for those with mental disorders.

Common mental health conditions deeply affect how a person functions and relates to others. While a stressful home or work life could make individuals more likely to become susceptible to the effects, the reality is that mental illnesses are more common than believed and can impact anyone. Research suggests that conditions are not linked to a specific event, but our well-being is shaped by a variety of factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and the environments we live in. Mental health challenges can feel overwhelming, and support is available through therapy, meditation practices, and compassionate professionals.

You Are Not Alone: Supporting NAMI and Mental Health Advocacy

NAMI is dedicated to building better lives for the millions of people affected by mental illness. Through education, advocacy, and support, NAMI works to improve outcomes for individuals and families while fighting stigma and expanding access to care. Financial contributions and acts of kindness help create a world where those affected can experience hope, recovery, and freedom from stigma.

How to Get Involved in NAMI’s mission:

  • Join local NAMIWalks events to raise awareness and show support.
  • Donate or start a fundraiser to help expand access to vital mental health resources.
  • Share your story to help normalize conversations around mental health.
  • Advocate for the mental health of underrepresented groups and communities by sharing helpful information, showing compassion, and writing to legislators to improve access to mental health services.

For those in need of immediate assistance or support, NAMI offers a confidential helpline with one-on-one support and mental health information. The organization also provides a broad spectrum of crisis guides and educational classes, in addition to a ‘Ask the Expert’ webinar series featuring professionals who share key research and advice related to mental illnesses.

Perficient colleagues in the U.S. can also support NAMI through the Perficient Gives Charitable Match program. Through the program, colleagues can donate to NAMI via payroll deductions, which Perficient will match dollar for dollar. In 2024, we collectively donated more than $8,000 to NAMI! Together, we’re building stronger communities and increasing visibility for mental well-being around the world.

LiveWell ERG: Creating Healthier Habits Through a Global Wellness Challenge

Perficient’s LiveWell Employee Resource Group (ERG) is a community of colleagues committed to supporting one another in building healthier habits—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Focused on achieving better overall well-being in health, relationships, and financial wellness, the LiveWell ERG provides practical tools, resources, and peer support to help colleagues take meaningful steps toward balance.

Building on the momentum from last year’s efforts, Perficient’s LiveWell ERG is hosting a second annual Global Wellness Challenge during October. This is a month-long challenge that encourages colleagues to participate in healthy daily habits across four categories: Nutrition, Rest, Mind, and Exercise. Whether it’s journaling, stretching, unplugging, or choosing nourishing meals, the challenge is designed to be flexible, inclusive, and easy to join.

The friendly competition encourages colleagues across Perficient’s global offices to share the activities that they are participating in throughout the month while sparking global connection and conversation around mental health. The impact goes beyond the points earned and focuses on progress, community, and showing up for yourself and others.

Building A Unified and Compassionate Culture Around Mental Wellness

In today’s fast-paced work environment, prioritizing and spreading awareness about mental health is imperative. When organizations champion authentic connections and embrace well-being, they create a collaborative, inclusive culture that elevates growth and aligns with colleagues’ personal values.

Here are a few ways Perficient’s teams support colleagues:

  1. Embrace Work-Life Balance: flexible work arrangements empower colleagues to manage their time in ways that support their personal well-being, whether through wellness activities or taking a few moments to yourself before a meeting.
  2. Create Open Dialogue: creating safe spaces encourages colleagues to have honest conversations about stress, burnout, and mental health.
  3. Share Helpful Resources: from materials shared during mental health days to employee assistance programs (EAPs), colleagues have access to tools and resources that support emotional well-being.
  4. Recognition and Connection: whether it’s a shoutout in a team meeting or a virtual coffee chat, recognition and connection help colleagues feel seen and valued.
  5. Leadership with Empathy: empathetic leadership creates a ripple effect. By modeling balance, setting boundaries, and prioritizing people, our leaders inspire their teams to do the same.

“I’m proud to be part of Perficient because my personal values align with the company’s. I value the culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and inclusion. I work with talented people who challenge, inspire, and support me. At Perficient, there’s a clear focus on doing the right thing—not only for our clients but also for our communities and each other as a team.” – Cecilia Prieto, Lead Talent Acquisition Specialist, Uruguay

Our Commitment to Wellness Is a Shared Journey

Amplifying voices through mental health advocacy is essential for building resiliency and ensuring those with mental illness are not alone. Being an advocate for mental health empowers individuals to manage stress, communicate effectively, and pursue meaningful growth, no matter their role or environment. When organizations lead with empathy and take intentional steps that support well-being, they help create environments where people feel safe, valued, and empowered to thrive.

By continuing to prioritize compassion, connection, and care, we’re shaping a future where mental health is embraced as a part of everyday life. World Mental Health Day is a reminder to pause and reflect—but it’s also a chance to recommit. Whether it’s joining a wellness challenge, supporting a nonprofit organization like NAMI, or simply checking in with a colleague, every action matters.

Real impact comes from embedding mental health into the way we support, connect, and grow. When we help one another build healthy habits, navigate challenges, and foster open dialogue, we strengthen our teams and culture. The result is a workplace where people feel more connected and better equipped to thrive.
