A theme commonly supported and increasing in characteristic for many of our partners is that of open source. A movement started in the late 1990s, open source software originally began with the intent of software developers learning from each other and ultimately the release of the Netscape Browser (and eventually others including Mozilla Firefox).
Today, open source serves as the core of many cloud and DevOps platforms while also serving as the preference for developers, according to a research study by GitLab. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the industry reasons for moving to open source that drive business outcomes.
- Flexibility: The market moves faster than ever and IT needs to respond appropriately. Unfortunately, proprietary vendor tools serve as a roadblock because developers can’t examine the code for issues. In contrast, open source code is visible for all to see and can be modified to solve any business challenge.
- Cost Effectiveness: Open source serves the enterprise financially much like cloud for infrastructure and software. Often times, open source tools are free and can be developed upon by those who see a potential for improvement.
- Industry Changes: Much of the industry is adapting open source for a variety of needs. According to research firm Gartner, 70% of new applications will run on open source by 2018, mainly due to lower total cost of ownership. With the amount of data being created going up, this appears to be a no-brainer decision.
- Customization: In addition to financial flexibility, open source software also offers customizability unrivaled by proprietary competitors. When developers care about the product that a community is working on, it goes even further. One such example is WordPress, a content management system that has been popularized as a web development platform with thousands of plugins and themes.
