Transforming Organizational Culture with IBM Cloud

Over on our Integrate blog, we’ve been discussing the cultural impacts of cloud on an organization as researched by John R. Rymer, et al, of research firm Forrester. Titled Tackling the Cultural Challenges of Agile and DevOps Transformation, the white paper tackles the organizational challenges of adopting DevOps while also exploring salient resolutions.

As you explore or continue to extract return on investment from your IBM Cloud implementations including Bluemix and UrbanCode (Application and Deploy), you may be interested in seeing how you can further integrate the usage of both technologies into your organizational culture.

Based on a close reading of Rymer, et al, we explore:

  1. Transformation #1: Focus on the What: Rymer and his colleagues discovered that while there are many technologies on the market, few actually achieve the job since the transition into cloud is still in its early phases. Among the technologies identified that developers should look at is IBM Bluemix with the conclusion that the platform simply works. As developers look to create innovations around all angles, this is the exact thought process they should take – it is the destination that matters more, so focus on that.
  2. Transformation #2: It’s Time to Retrain: What’s yesterday is good, but also will not satisfy the needs of tomorrow. From your business staff to your development teams, the transition to the cloud is as good a time as any to reset expectations, rewrite standard operating procedures, and retool the right skills for maximum competitive advantage.
  3. Transformation #3: Be the Explorer: Cloud is still nascent, and despite its popularity, data (info week blog) still shows that many are still in the early exploration phase of adoption. If you’re already there, play the role of explorer and see how your Bluemix or UrbanCode implementations can stretch the boundaries known to cloud. This will enable your organization to be an industry leader while getting ahead of the competition in innovating services and solutions.
  4. Transformation #4: Measure the Dynamics: As cloud transforms how your information technology works, it will also impact how your staff works together. While an ideal world is devoid of issues, the truth of the matter is that there will be objections to change. Find a way to measure the change while ensuring that employees remain engaged, interested, and ready to get to work. Ideas can include everything from opening up the workspace to pairing up staff to collaborate towards better outcomes.
