How Good Are Backlink Tools at Finding Links?
Recently we tested the three most popular backlink checking tools–Moz Open Site Explorer, Majestic, and ahrefs–to see how many links to a web page each actually showed.

Thanks for this very helpful data. This confirms that it really is important to invest in not just one but many tools for checking backlinks.
Although using a collection of all three link research tools is best, I have found that OSE is a better tool to find GOOD links for link building purposes and Ahrefs is better at finding volume of links for bad link analysis. Ahrefs also tend to pick up on new links a lot faster.
Considering the way that all these tools work, it is remarkable that they manage to find 60% of all links. After all, they do have to crawl the complete internet.
Good post , thanks . Since I ‘m just about to improve my English , I read a lot of pages in English 🙂 I hope my contribution here is a good read . Many greetings from Germany says Daniel
Thanks for the information. It is just as I suspected. I have tried several different backlink checkers and get different results on each…. and now I know why.
But as Eric noted in the article, that doesn’t mean the tools aren’t useful. Far from it! It’s just best to be using more than one if you are able.
Ok thanks. I will definitely be using more than one and checking my results. I appreciate your reply!
A good contribution that helped me a lot, thank you very much. Unfortunately there is the best information only on English pages. The Germans do not offer so much info.
Greetings from Germany
semrush is also a good tool for checking backlink and other type of analytics
i always use semrush
must add it in this post
Thanks
We love SEMrush as well, but it did not have a backlinking tool at the time we did this study.
I’d like to mention Open Link Profiler. It’s free to a certain extent and is the best alternative to paid backlink checkers.
