What it Takes to Build a Successful Career in Health IT

In a video interview I recently recorded with Steven Scott, general manager of our healthcare practice, and Martin Sizemore, principal of healthcare strategy, we discussed the reasons why someone should consider a career at Perficient within our healthcare team. These reasons to build your career here are also strong factors for working in healthcare IT in general. See the video below.

Why you’ll enjoy working in health IT

Steven and Martin cite at least three major advantages to working in this space:
Fast-paced growth and change: “We are in an industry that’s in transformation,” said Steven. So you have an opportunity to do things that you wouldn’t have to do in other industries.
Helping people: Working in healthcare IT, you’re applying technology, but at the end of the day, you are also helping people get better and enabling better health outcomes.
Work with talented people: We have solution architects, business analysts, an emergency room doctor, an oncology nurse and a physical therapist. So it’s a fun, highly collaborative environment working with really diversely talented individuals.
Frank Myeroff, in a recent blog post for HIMSS, cited three reasons why there’s never been a more exciting time to work in health IT: “Government regulations, mobility, and emerging technologies to improve patient health information as well as patient care.”

Myeroff also suggests 6 traits one must have in order to have the “right stuff to be successful and promotable in this career.”

  1. Excellent communication skills
  2. Integrity
  3. Strong work ethic
  4. Problem-solving skills
  5. Acting as a team player
  6. Flexibility & Adaptability
