Last October, we proudly entered into an agreement to acquire SMEDIX, Inc., a healthcare and life sciences software engineering firm based in San Diego, California, with European operations located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Today, we’re thrilled to welcome nearly 175 new colleagues to the Perficient team.
I recently met with Kevin Sheen, Perficient’s Senior Vice President of global delivery, and Fayez Sweiss, former SMEDIX President and CEO and now Perficient General Manager, to learn more about the acquisition and what the future looks like.
Thank you for the time, Kevin and Fayez. I wanted to start by asking about the acquisition itself. Why SMEDIX, and why now?
Kevin: Thanks for having us, Connor. We’re excited to welcome the SMEDIX team to Perficient!
Healthcare and life sciences are two of the largest industry verticals Perficient serves, with a substantial roster of clients spanning providers, plans, pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device companies. These companies trust us to combine deep technical expertise and extensive global presence to enhance patient care. We’re committed to growing our global presence and delivery capabilities to ensure we have the right people in the right place at the right time to innovate digital solutions for our clients.
With the addition of SMEDIX, we’re strengthening both our industry software development capabilities and our global delivery capacity. We see great opportunity in SMEDIX and its ability to design and develop medtech software solutions.

Could you tell me more about SMEDIX’s software development expertise? How does it enhance Perficient’s existing capabilities?

We’ve helped many clients bring medical software products to market that meet the safety, quality, and usability attributes required in healthcare and medical device industries. Plus, we follow best practices and methodologies, including strong Agile principles rather than one methodology in particular, that align with Perficient’s leading approach.
Kevin: Healthcare and life sciences are highly regulated industries that face higher consumer and governmental scrutiny. The medical device industry, in particular, is changing rapidly, and innovations are becoming more and more complex. Speaking of global development, talk to me about the offshore delivery location in Romania. What’s the benefit there?
Fayez: The majority of our 175 skilled professionals are located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania — a city surrounded by top polytechnic universities that produce a deep talent pool of highly skilled software engineers. Working from our fully-equipped development center, this offshore division of engineers enables our clients around the globe to cost-effectively maximize investments without compromising on quality, compliance, or technology.
Kevin: We know that global delivery is a compelling and powerful model for development, and we’re committed to building a world-class global delivery model that brings the best teams, capabilities, and processes together. A cornerstone of Perficient’s delivery philosophy is that every solution and service we offer is built and delivered globally. We have global depth and talent located in nearly 40 office locations across North America, Lain America, India, Asia Pacific, and Eastern Europe. With the addition of a dedicated team of software developers in Romania, we are significantly bolstering our existing European delivery capabilities and the quality of work we deliver to our healthcare and life sciences clients.

What’s next now that the acquisition has closed?
Kevin: Our teams have worked closely over the past few months, conducting due diligence in order to ensure SMEDIX and Perficient are a perfect, complementary fit. Now that the acquisition has closed, I see SMEDIX fully integrating with the Perficient brand, bringing world-class software development solutions to our global healthcare and life sciences clients.
Fayez: I’ll add that because of our combined breadth and depth of expertise, I think we also have an opportunity to evolve and expand our offerings to our clients.
I’m also really excited for our colleagues. We’re joining a collaborative culture that is intently focused on accelerating innovation for its clients and understands the value of its people. There’s so much growth potential, and I can’t wait to see what we achieve together.
