12 Days of DevOps: 4 Automated Chat Bots

“On the fourth day of Christmas, my IT guy gave to me, 4 automated chat bots”

In recent years, organizations have emphasized on bettering user experiences, from creating mobile-responsive websites to fast-loading mobile applications. These features were implemented to match rising customer experiences from a passive perspective and were matched by search engines and social networks, both of whom rewarded well-designed platforms with top search engine rankings.

In 2016, the tone of conversation began to change as organizations sought new methods to communicate with customers, leading to the rise of chat bots – otherwise known as conversational user experience (UX). Chat bots, which are defined as being a service powered by artificial intelligence is now gaining traction in everything from retail to higher education to event management as organizations seek automated methods to interact with customers.

Here’s one such example:

  • You are shopping for shoes on a major brand-name retailer but do not want to wade through pages upon pages of web content. Instead of using the search button, you can message a bot which would ask you what you are looking for and you would indicate your requirements, upon which a product will be delivered.

Shopping – or nearly any other task – is just that easy.

The DevOps gift of the holidays doesn’t end there, however. As development teams create chat bots for customers, they can also use them for their own gain. Communications platforms including Slack, HipChat, and Hubot offer chat automation which can be set up to provide automated responses for common development questions. This form of chat bot creation has been come to be known as ChatOps and offers benefits including situational awareness and collaboration.
