The Economist Intelligence Unit has a a great infographic in the role of IT in Digital Transformation. I’ve heard many opinions ranging from IT should lead it to “please get out of the way”. I agree with what the survey says in their infographic.
The reality of Digital Transformation is that its a shared task across many different business units and departments. That include Sales, Marketing, Operations, Customer Care, IT, and specific business lines. I would argue that while Marketing seems to have a heavy hand in this, business lines should be the one to push this even harder. Frankly, failure for the business to act on an important channel means failure to capitalize on opportunity and lost market share / revenue.
You should read the entire infographic since I don’t replicate everything and there are some nice nuggets of information. But I will leave you with something that non-IT people tend to downplay which is Agile software development and DevOps. Frankly, Transforming your Digital business without these is like manufacturing without Six Sigma………… a real big inhibitor to your desired end result.
