Appian’s Journey From Gartner’s Magic Quadrant To Life Sciences

The other day, I was on a business development call in which the Appian platform was discussed. Appian happens to be a “Leader” in Gartner’s 2015 Magic Quadrant for Intelligent Business Process Management Suites. Not too shabby.

The presenter talked about Perficient’s successes with Appian in financial services and healthcare, but when I heard him mention life sciences, my ears perked up…as did a skeptical eyebrow. While we in life sciences are always interested in new technology that might be faster, cheaper, and more flexible, we’re also skeptical that anything not already tried and true could actually live up to our high standards.

Well, my eyebrow began a slow descent when I heard “low code or no code” and came to rest when I heard “21 CFR Part 11-compliant.” At the very least, I knew the presenter was aware of some of the key regulations we’re up against. He also mentioned some life sciences case studies – not theoretical use cases, but actual solutions that pharma companies have deployed on the Appian platform – and that got me poking around on their website.

Not only did I find the pharma case studies (even one for the FDA!), I found a white paper that details how Appian supports compliance with 21 CFR Part 11. That’s when I felt a smile creeping in. Between Appian’s conscientious approach to their product and Perficient’s expertise in compliant implementations, Appian is proving to be a viable option for life sciences.
