IBM Releases Update to Portal 8 and WCM 8

IBM released the first update to Portal and Web Content Manager since their major release of Portal 8 back in September 2012.  They announced the release on on Friday January 25th.  Here’s a brief overview of what they released and we’ll get more detail throughout the week.  I should note that this release is in keeping with IBM’s stated intent to follow a more continuous update model rather than a major release every two years.

  • Faster simplere content creation.  The continue to make WCM a better product
  • Mobile ubiquity oob with intherent responsive design.  In other words, they have a version three of their mobile theme and even better mobile support for content display templates. They already supported html5 and things like gestures.  This should continue to make it easier to support the complete range of smart phone and tablet formats with an experience close to native applications.
  • Social content rendering and multi-channel publishing.  WCM evolves to let you publish content not just to your web site but to Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
  • DAM / Rich media edition.  It’s been a pain point for a while.  Customers always want to manage images better and this finally addresses it.  It’s version 1 so I’m really interested to see what that means.
  • Integration to Kenexa.  IBM bought Kenexa, the talent and workforce management solution, in 2012.  What they do should integrate nicely to things like employee portals.  Think social integration and social HR.

I am reporting on this in a business partner session. I haven’t seen an official PR release from IBM yet.
