A quick tip post here, as I go about looking through some of my older posts from my personal blog.
Standard Values are an awesome thing for Sitecore architects. Most likely, anyone who’s developed a Sitecore site has set “$name” as a default Standard Value to at least one field of his templates. The proper use of Standard Values can really reduce the time a Content Manager needs to spend “managing” her content initially. However, with great power comes great responsibility (thanks Uncle Ben!), so let’s make sure we’re aware of some of the shortcomings of using Standard Values. Specifically, there seems to be an issue if you try to search on a value that is coming from a Standard Value, rather than being set explicitly on an item. In other words, your search won’t return any items whose value should be returned based on search criteria, if that value is generated from a Standard Value. Check out this post I wrote for a direct example.
