Capacity Planning:
Capacity planning is very critical to the deployment of an Exchange server/ cluster. It is very important that we understand the capacity requirements of the business versus the capacity available to an Exchange server. Capacity planning affects many areas. For instance, positioning to many users on a server can create multiple risks. Those risks are poor performance, disk space limitations, longer recovery (DR) times, longer online maintenance intervals, longer off-line maintenance (Repair, integrity checks, defrags) and extended backup times that may interfere with production. Here are some things to consider while determining proper capacity for an Exchange server/ cluster.
Considerations:
· Setting Mailbox Store Quotas – Limit the amount of data certain users can store. Separate heavy users from light users.
· Logical Disk Sizing and separation – 1 Logical Disk per Storage Group Databases and 1 Logical Disk per Storage Group Log Files.
· Quick and Efficient Backup Solution to fit the Logical Disk sizing requirements
· Amount of users to an Exchange server based on user requirements. (See Mailbox Store Size Considerations along with Physical Disk Considerations)
· Third party apps (Unified Messaging, Faxing, and Antivirus/ Spam)
Tools to Consider:
· Exchange Server Load Simulator 2003 (LoadSim)
· Disk Subsystem Performance Analysis for Windows
