ESX Design Experiences and Best Practices

My first project after landing here at PointBridge was a large virtual server migration/new implementation of between 250 and 3000 physical servers from Wolters Kluwer. (The varied number of servers is wide – at the time of this posting, WK has an undecided number of servers they will dedicate to virtuializaion.)

Attached to this post is a document I’ve prepared to get enumerate some best practices and recommendations disclosed to those looking to get their feet wet with ESX. I will be adding to this post – some topics not included yet are some hardware recommendations from vendors – such as HP.

Also, I’ve posted a second document listing three popular 3rd Party software products designed to augment the ESX server line. These software products provide some very interesting options to what can be implemented or purchased directly from VMware. In some cases, the 3rd Party software exceeds the feature-set of the ESX software line. It’s all about how much budget the company wants to dedicate to their virtualization goals.

Lastly, I’ll list some of my favorite web URL links I’ve run across providing some very interesting information I’ve not found anywhere else.

Happy Virtualizing!
