Spring has finally arrived, which means two things:

  • There are now less than three months to the arrival of summer.
  • Now is a very good time to do some cleaning.

While the traditional habits of the season have called for cleaning out closets and tidying up the backyard, our heavy reliance on technology also requires an annual maintenance of our technology to ensure cost efficiencies, collaboration, and data. With 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created per day, technology spring cleaning is just as important as traditional spring cleaning. In today’s blog post, we will examine how organizations and individuals can spring clean through the cloud with respect to storage, efficiency, and security.

Spring Cleaning Tip #1: Tackle storage and backups

If you’re like me, you’ve created a lot of content over the past year and have likely neglected to do much after its creation. Spring cleaning is a perfect time to back up everything like photos, documents, and financial records. With numerous data breaches being reported in the media, emphasizing storage and backup becomes even more important, regardless of organization or individual. According to a 2015 IBM study, the average data breach costs $3.8 million dollars to fix, and every lost record can run between $145 and 154 a piece.  No matter who you may be, this should be enough motivation to look into purchasing a cloud backup solution that you can rely on should data be lost or stolen.

Spring Cleaning Tip #2: Explore opportunities for efficiency

Springtime is also a chance to put some energy towards boosting organizational or personal efficiency. Nowadays you can find technology automation tools on the web like Zapier and IFTTT which offer the ability to trigger specific activities like delivering weather information and cross-posting social media updates. For enterprise organizations, efficiency is available through technologies like IBM BlueMix and Watson, which respectively help technical teams scale and automate application development and optimize contextual decision-making. With greater efficiency coming from the cloud, organizations can spend less time working out bugs and more time selling and sharing their products with the world.

Spring Cleaning Tip #3: Spring into increased security

Finally, now is a great time to reconsider your company’s internal and external technology security policies. As cloud adoption continues to increase, the investment in cloud security technologies increases as well, offering individuals and organizations the opportunity to explore the market. Furthermore, 43% of security breaches are attributed to internal mishaps by employees. Updating the corporate technology policy and standard operating procedures is definitely a good call.

With these tips in mind, head forth and update or refresh your technology systems today. Tune in next week as we cover more tips on how to manage your technology this season.
