Hear From Some of Our Attendees

Prabha Ranganathan

Prabha Ranganathan

Why is this event so important for the life sciences industry?

Prabha Ranganathan: Traditionally, life sciences industry is very slow to adopt new technologies and solutions. This is due to several factors, most notably the regulatory environment of the industry in general makes it difficult to bring changes quickly. The whole landscape and mindset of the industry is rapidly evolving and innovations are across the board. With several (at least 16) programs ranging from study feasibility analysis, real world evidence, digital measurements, data and decentralized/hybrid trials, this is one conference where we can understand where the industry is going, where all life sciences companies and customers are focusing on, and how to evolve with the industry. This gives us opportunities to focus on identifying and providing innovative solutions across the industry.

Vicky Green: The goal of this conference is targeted to be a place that executive leaders of organizations can present about their section of the organization and discuss initiatives and/or pain points that have or that are being resolved through a current ongoing program or project.  The conference is also broken into clear workstreams over the three days of the conference.  This allows executive leaders to collaborate with their industry peers across different organizations involved including Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Medical Device, Clinical Research Organizations as well as consulting and software organizations as well.  A lot of these executive leaders are also already participating in Life Science consortium companies are more open to discuss and collaborate to try to make things better for the patients across all areas these companies face whether it is the execution of clinical trials, manufacturing/supply chain, Medical product support from marketing, call centers, etc.

Rudolf Coetzee: Clinical development encompasses a plethora of different divisions all working towards a common goal. Orchestrating diverse perspectives significantly contributes to the overall success of technologies and innovations in the realm of data science all with a focus on better outcomes for patients.

What topics do you think will be top-of-mind for attendees this year?

Prabha: AI and how it can be used in areas like decentralized trials, data, real world evidence and how these can be incorporated into newer technologies to ensure that trials are safe, effective and run smoothly. Automation and using technology to reduce manual mundane tasks while focusing on primary tasks that reap benefits faster will be what all streams will be focusing on this year.

Vicky: Artificial Intelligence companies are working to determine the TRUE value of implementation of AI/ML into processes and case studies that show that is going to save organizations time, money and bring in efficiency to support current staff and fit within a very regulated environment. It has been determined that implementing AI/ML is not always bringing value but there are a lot of amazing use cases where it is transforming teams and businesses with their increasing work loads.  The goal is to truly bring value, cost savings and efficiencies. Generative AI is a high discussion point with companies as I have had so many of these and I look forward to hearing from some of the presentations and speaking with companies as well. Getting data into users’ hands faster throughout the execution of clinical trials and clinical programs while ensuring there is true collaboration on the same data across teams in one system instead of many systems with duplicate work/communication.  Medical reviewers want to see the data faster to be able to see trends, signals within the data. How to share secure data in a secure way and expanding that across studies and platforms?  Also, continuing to address concerns as well in this area with ensuring that as this moves forward to improve the tracking of who, why, when, and where did someone review secure data including blinded/unblinded data as well.

Rudolf: Modern technology including AI and proof if this will truly revolutionize the industry. What are the use cases?

What is PRFT’s expert approach to those topics (i.e., solutions, success stories, strategic positions, etc.)?

Vicky Green

Vicky Green

Prabha: Perficient has expertise and knowledge to provide solutions like Clinical Data Repositories, Data Management platforms and how we can build this on newer platforms while incorporating AI & automation solutions. Other areas to consider include integrations (streaming data and publicly available data) into ongoing trials or for new trials, how to help companies setup decentralized trials, integration of life sciences and healthcare (CDR and EMR integration for e.g.)

Vicky: Perficient is a digital consulting organization with consultants that are passionate about helping our customers solve problems, transform their business, and continue to bring options to patients for treat and/or cures including medicines, medical devices, etc.  Our team loves being part of these amazing journeys knowing they are part of something special which could improve and/or save the lives of their family, themselves, a friend and even a stranger.  It is knowing you are building and helping to solve problems utilizing our strategies, principals and consultants from a process, persona, technical and industry standpoint. Then add on top our executive management teams support to ensure our teams can do just that utilizing our global team of colleagues. The goal is to help companies where they are in consideration/planning, strategy and planning, development, executive, deployment and/or standard maintenance/upgrade/deployment. Technology is always changing, support end users is consistently changing and evolving and business having to continue to evolve and change so build for the future and flexibility for those changes and growth.

Rudolf: That is the groundbreaking stuff our team is working on.

Are there any sessions that you’re particularly excited to attend?

Prabha: All sessions in Data, Study feasibility, decentralized trials, and digital measurements will be valuable to attend.

Rudolf Coetzee

Rudolf Coetzee

Vicky: Data workstream including AI solutions, collaboration solutions.

Rudolf: The Data Stream

What else makes this event special for you, personally?

Prabha: Understanding how various companies have progressed in their efforts from last year, lessons learnt from their work, and networking opportunities to meet existing and new customers/vendors.

Vicky: This will be my first-time attending scope.  I look forward to listening to leaders across organizations in Clinical R&D, Supply Chain, Innovation/Strategy – IT, Manufacturing and more to hear their presentations, talk through how they are evolving, solving identified use cases mapping to ongoing pain points and challenges with having more data but how to give access to it in a truly valuable way.  Data is so important to companies in all areas of the business, and we ensure in all our projects this is a focal point.  I always look forward to seeing colleagues and friends across the industry from my clients and meeting new people as well. I hope to see you there.

Rudolf: Meeting with contacts, meeting with prospects, selling Perficient tools and services, learning, and spending time with colleagues in person.

Perficient Quoted in Two Forrester Reports Exploring How Health Plans Can Better Engage Members https://blogs.perficient.com/2024/01/30/perficient-quoted-in-two-forrester-reports-exploring-how-health-plans-can-better-engage-members/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2024/01/30/perficient-quoted-in-two-forrester-reports-exploring-how-health-plans-can-better-engage-members/#respond Tue, 30 Jan 2024 15:13:06 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=354641

We often hear from our payer clients that, due to the highly matrixed nature of health insurance organizations, no one group feels that it truly owns the entire experience of its members.

As many healthcare leaders know, this fragmentation can negatively impact the care journey, health outcomes, cost management, member attrition, and more.

In its recent report, Health Plans Can Reach New Heights (And Connections) In Digital Member Engagement, Forrester states, “If plans use member-facing digital technology to create consistent, frictionless experiences, members will seek opportunities to engage with that provider and become more loyal to their plan.”

Ultimately, healthcare consumers seek opportunities to engage with providers that create seamless experiences. In her quote within Forrester’s reportMarybeth Wrabel, Perficient Senior Solutions Architect, drove this challenge home:

“Why would members spend time engaging with their health plan if they don’t see the benefit in doing so?”

Simply put, members need to be engaged in ways that are purposeful, personalized, convenient, and useful. And technology certainly plays an important role.

However, solving member experience is not about the technology itself. Rather, we see the greatest success when organizations define desired business outcomes then approach technology as a strategic enabler of those goals. Strategic planning, implementation, and optimization, of course, require experience, so it’s important to partner with experts that deeply understand the nuance and complexities within the healthcare industry.

Optimize Member Experiences

Anticipatory, proactive care navigation could delight and influence members, help remove barriers to care, and help change behaviors. And payers – when taking primary responsibility of care navigation – can serve as an empowering resource, equipping members to more-confidently make informed decisions about their health.

We recommend that technology executives work with Chief Experience Officers to understand key journeys, identify major moments of friction, and improve engagement and education at each point.

  • Ensure that leaders across operations, digital, marketing and the business segment agree upon the role that digital plays in organizational objectives.
  • Align on direct and attributional Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for member engagement.
  • Dedicate annual funding with an identified decision maker that regularly monitors and discusses KPIs, outcomes, and planned improvements.

Increase Consumer Loyalty

Forrester also published a related report, Boost Member Engagement With A Journey-Focused Strategy, and Perficient healthcare experts were interviewed by Forrester as they investigated customer journeys and engagement in health plans. Perficient’s Priyal Patel, Director and Healthcare Strategist, is quoted in Forrester’s report discussing Line of Business (LOB) models. She states:

“There needs to be a shift from traditional LOB models to personalized engagement about what the member needs to do.”

We believe that once members are engaged in useful and meaningful ways, then efforts to influence behaviors for better health outcomes will be more impactful.

LOB refers to the specific types of insurance products or services that a healthcare insurance organization offers. LOB is basically a way to help categorize different areas of coverage and each LOB typically addresses specific healthcare services to meet various needs.  For example, Medical, Dental, Vision, and Medicare or Medicaid. It is important to understand and manage different LOB so that insurers can tailor their offerings to the different needs of their customer base. However, as the healthcare landscape continues to shift to consumerism, it is important to not solely rely on LOB alone when increasing consumer engagement.

Perficient is actively working with payers to make claims-driven personalized experiences more purposeful and meaningful. Examples include:

  • Next best actions based on gaps in expected routine health claims
  • Educational resources and outreach based on patterns of claims for chronic conditions
  • Recommendations for well-respected physicians and health systems, supported with transparent cost information, based on the patient’s current plan usage

Have questions? We help healthcare organizations identify outcomes-centered strategies and solutions to optimize care experiences and drive value. Contact us today, and let’s discuss your specific needs and goals.

People of Perficient: Meet Janelle McDonald, Project Manager https://blogs.perficient.com/2023/12/12/people-of-perficient-meet-janelle-mcdonald-project-manager/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2023/12/12/people-of-perficient-meet-janelle-mcdonald-project-manager/#comments Tue, 12 Dec 2023 15:51:47 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=350852

I recently sat down with one of our lead project managers, Janelle McDonald. I enjoyed hearing more about her position at Perficient and the role Perficient plays in creating a more equitable healthcare industry, and I’m sure you will too.

Describe your role. How do you make a difference for our clients, colleagues, communities, and teams? What does a typical day or project look like?

1st Class Edinburgh Inverness2

Janelle enjoys traveling in her personal time.

As a Project Manager, I serve as a “translator” between business and technical resources to develop innovative healthcare solutions. A typical day starts with a Scrum call and usually ends with a tracking meeting for any roadblockers. In between there are lots of meetings and writing for user stories, requirements, and updates to Confluence. I find Jira/Confluence to be a great communication tool between our team and the client. Keeping up with the changes in healthcare technology is critical to making a positive impact for clients. For me, product management is knowing your market innovations and government mandates. As artificial intelligence invades healthcare systems, it is important to know the possibilities and recognize the client product pitfalls.

What are the things you value about working: 1) In your role? 2) On your team? 3) At this company?

In My Role: With over 25 years of healthcare IT experience, it is invigorating to see the rapid changes for the industry. Healthcare IT remained stagnant during the early 2000s; now it is evolving every day.

On My Team: The team’s can-do attitude during critical product delivery phases. Management is always available to remove roadblocks and scope changes.

At This Company: The vast array of resources and learning opportunities available to all.

What made you decide to work for Perficient? What makes you stay and want to do your best work at Perficient?

I chose to work at Perficient because of their industry reputation. I stay because I am enjoying my work and not being targeted as a scapegoat when a project is difficult.

Healthcare and life sciences organizations are increasingly focused on equity. The digital transformations we deliver can either support greater equity or – the opposite – exacerbate inequities. How are you seeing diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) addressed in your work and in the industry? And how are you approaching your work through an equity lens?

Retirement Home Scotland

Janelle’s dream home located in Scotland.

DE&I is critical to healthcare product work; specifically, member preferences. To support greater equity, it is necessary to gather more than claims and prior authorization data. Demographic data is insufficient to identify individuals experiencing health roadblocks. Engaging with the client to identify their pain points requires daily conversations and a deep understanding of the members interaction points. For example, is an increase in call center activity related to a change in payment policy? How can I assist that client to minimize the negative impact? Is the change mandatory or specific to the client? Another example is industry leaders are removing medical services from the prior authorization list. By using generative AI to identify at risk members the insurance companies are reach out to the members with preventative services.

In the work you deliver for healthcare and life sciences clients, how does your industry experience enable you to better-support client/industry culture?

My industry tenure of 25+ years, provides a client with a wide range of experience in digital systems, mandates, and innovation. Additionally, I am a member of several industry groups that work on technology advancements such as Medicaid Technical Advisory Group, Guidehouse, and Linkedin.

Janelle

(Optional) What else would you like people to know about working at Perficient? Any final thoughts?

I love the diversity at Perficient. On a daily basis,  I work with people from three continents and those who speak multiple languages. Traveling the world is my lifetime goal. I have lived in Turkey for three years, spent a month traveling Scotland, and visit Mexico regularly.

Leveraging Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform for Operational Efficiency https://blogs.perficient.com/2022/10/26/leveraging-red-hat-ansible-automation-platform-for-operational-efficiency/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2022/10/26/leveraging-red-hat-ansible-automation-platform-for-operational-efficiency/#respond Wed, 26 Oct 2022 21:17:36 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=313323

Ansible Automation Platform is an open-source IT automation tool that automates provisioning, configuration management, application deployment, orchestration, and many other manual IT processes. Unlike more simplistic management tools, Ansible users (like system administrators, developers, and architects) can use Ansible automation to install software, automate daily tasks, provision infrastructure, improve security and compliance, patch systems, and share automation across the entire organization. Ansible can bring operational efficiency by removing manual processes using automation.

Ansible provides an enterprise framework for building and operating IT automation at scale, from hybrid cloud to the edge. Ansible enables users across an organization to create, share, and manage automation—from development and operations to security and network teams.

IT managers can provide guidelines on how automation is applied to individual teams, and automation creators can write tasks that use existing knowledge. Ansible provides a more secure and stable foundation for deploying end-to-end automation.

Ansible can automate:

  • Infrastructure
  • Applications
  • Networks
  • Containers
  • Security
  • Cloud

See what’s new with Ansible Automation Platform 2.2!

Ansible works by connecting to what you want automated and pushing programs that execute instructions that would have been done manually. The programs use Ansible modules that are written based on specific expectations of the endpoint’s connectivity, interface, and commands. Ansible will then execute these modules and removes them when finished.

There are no additional servers or databases required. Typically IT leaders will use their favorite terminal program, a text editor, and a version control system to keep track of changes to their content.

Automation Remains a Big Topic for IT Leaders

Recently, Red Hat released its annual Global Tech Outlook for 2022 where they surveyed 1,341 IT leaders and decision-makers to better understand where they are on their digital transformation journeys. A deeper dive into the numbers shows that automation is still an important topic for IT leaders:

  • 36% of IT decision-makers cited security automation as their top automation funding priority in 2022. Furthermore, automating IT operations was the second most common funding priority for optimizing legacy IT (38%) in 2021, the biggest increase from 2020.
  • Security automation is again the top funding priority for automation overall at 36% showing how modern DevSecOps practices—and good security practices more broadly—require continuous and automated security throughout the software life cycle.

Ansible Automation Platform has grown over the years to provide powerful automation solutions that work for operators, administrators, and IT decision-makers across a variety of technology domains. It is the leading enterprise automation solution from Red Hat, a thriving open-source community, and the de facto standard technology of IT automation.

People of Perficient: Meet Lindsey Broadwell Ph.D., Solutions Architect https://blogs.perficient.com/2022/05/18/people-of-perficient-meet-lindsey-rhead-lead-technical-consultant/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2022/05/18/people-of-perficient-meet-lindsey-rhead-lead-technical-consultant/#respond Wed, 18 May 2022 15:00:31 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=307086

I recently sat down with one of our lead solutions archiects, Lindsey Broadwell Ph.D.. Lindsey has expertise in topics relating to the social determinants of health and a passion for influencing meaningful change. I enjoyed hearing more about her position at Perficient and the role Perficient plays in creating a more equitable healthcare industry, and I’m sure you will too.

Lindsey, thank you so much for joining me today. Can you describe your role? How do you make a difference for our clients, colleagues, communities, and teams? What does a typical day or project look like?

My role is focused on helping clients meet their data and analytics goals. I do this by collaborating with them to define needs, overcome obstacles, and implement and manage a solution. I lead clients toward a solution. Then, I help them implement applications, systems, and processes to help customers gain insight and value based on data and analytics to solve clinical and business problems.

On a typical project, I work directly with clients to ensure a full understanding of business needs and requirements. I work with internal teams and client teams to strategize solutions based on data and healthcare requirements and deliver actionable insights to improve business processes.

I leverage my expertise in the areas of data science, social determinants of health, and other emerging health policy insights to provide thought leadership and drive meaningful change for our clients within the healthcare system.

What are the things you value about working: In your role? On your team? At this company?

In My Role: I love that my role allows me such flexibility and freedom to constantly learn new skills and push myself harder. No two days on any project are the same, and no two clients are the same. It is exciting to watch a solution you’ve worked hard on come to life and bring value – it is something that will never get old or boring. I am fortunate to have the ability to repeat this overall process in new and inventive ways with each new client. I also love that I have the ability to wear a different hat and take on a new role, or challenge, with every new client or position on a project.

On My Team: My favorite meetings and time spent is with my team – project team, Healthcare BU team, PRFT team. There is always so much genuine care for team members, willingness to teach and mentor others, and happiness. This team focuses on how to be and do better, but also how to appreciate each person and their accomplishments. Every team I have worked with has taught me invaluable skills and helped make me a better leader, consultant, and person.

At This Company: This is the first company I have worked at that values the culture of the company so much. I firmly believe that culture is the most important part of a job, and Perficient genuinely values employee feedback, satisfaction, and the impacts workplace culture has on all individuals. From employee resource groups supporting Women in Technology, to a culture team focused specifically on implementing direct employee feedback and promoting change within the Healthcare Business Unit, I believe the real value and impact Perficient has on my life is in how we are all respected and treated within the company.

This has shown me that a positive, healthy workplace can intersect with a fascinating and challenging career.

What made you decide to work for Perficient? What makes you stay and want to do your best work at Perficient?

I wanted to try something different. While I have had roles where I was consulting, I had not worked specifically as a consultant. The thought of the constant change and challenges of learning new things regularly and quickly intrigued me. I also really liked my interviews, honestly. Every person I interviewed with seemed to be genuinely interested in what I was saying, and provided clear and direct feedback quickly.

I stay at Perficient because of the culture, the flexibility with roles and projects, and my leadership.

Not only have I invested in Perficient, but my Perficient leadership has invested in me in ways I have not experienced before. The number of meetings and conversations I have about my goals, career path, trajectory, and potential within Perficient show me that my leadership cares about what I want and want to help me achieve my goals.

SEE MORE: Work-Life Balance at Perficient

Healthcare and life sciences organizations are increasingly focused on equity. The digital transformations we deliver can either support greater equity or – the opposite – exacerbate inequities. How are you seeing diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) addressed in your work and in the industry? And how are you approaching your work through an equity lens?

Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity have been a passion of mine for many years now; it is a large part of what drove me to the healthcare field. However, DE&I is much more than that, and should be considered across all areas of healthcare and the work we do. One of my favorite things when I joined Perficient was the Women in Technology employee group. As, typically, one of the few women in my line of work, it was so invigorating to see an entire employee resource group focused on empowering women in our field and helping them grow. I am seeing change in our industry with clients focused on ensuring members, or patients, of different race, ethnicity, language, and gender identification are being recognized and have support and options. Sometimes it is something as small as providing adequate options for gender identity on a website or intake form, other times it is creating entire initiatives around outreach to traditionally marginalized communities. We have so far to go, but it is refreshing to see so many steps being taken.

My goal when I work is to always keep myself in check and ensure that I am cognizant of DE&I in my proposed solutions and insights. I work to ensure I live my beliefs in DE&I in every interaction I have with colleagues, customers, and strangers. I work with a lot of data, and it can be easy to overlook critical opportunities to improve equity when data is not present; I take every opportunity I have to work with a client, or colleague, to gather and include that data in our solutions.

In the work you deliver for healthcare and life sciences clients, how does your industry experience enable you to better-support client/industry culture?

I believe that the teams we assemble, the way we conduct ourselves, and the work we deliver have a huge impact on our culture with our clients. Additionally, if we try to keep in mind the goals of the healthcare industry, everything we deliver should be one step closer to improving industry culture – in the way insurance companies interact with their members or physician offices and their workflows to improve patient care, for example.

What else would you like people to know about working at Perficient? Any final thoughts?

I cannot express enough how much I value the culture at Perficient. You cannot replace a healthy, psychologically safe, and fun environment. It is something that radiates from the top down and you can feel it with all of your colleagues; it is something that everyone lives working here. Starting a new project with a new team is more exciting than scary because you know your Perficient team will have your back, support you, and educate you along the way.
