Dresner claims ‘Business Intelligence Renaissance’

Dresner Advisory Services has recently completed and published its 3rd annual ‘Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study.’ The report itself highlights the shift towards emergent consumer-oriented BI. As part of the analysis vendors within the bi reporting and analytics space are given scores based on 33 criteria and 7 categories as well as an overall average score. They also broke vendors down into four different sub-groups:

  • Titans – the largest vendors, with extensive product and service offerings – including Business Intelligence. In all cases these vendors have acquired Business Intelligence vendors. (IBM/Cognos, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP/BusinessObjects)
  • Large Established Pure-Play – BI vendors are predominately focused upon Business Intelligence software and services and have typically been in business for 15 or more years – with well established customer bases and revenue streams. Several are publicly held. (Information Builders, MicroStrategy and SAS Institute)
  • High Growth – BI vendors have achieved critical mass in the market and are growing at an extremely high rate – well above the industry average. (QlikTech, Tableau and Tibco/Spotfire)
  • Emerging – BI vendors are typically younger than other categories and offer unique and often innovative business models, technologies and/or services. (Arcplan, Dimensional Insight, Jedox, Pentaho and Yellowfin)

While it is interesting to see how vendors compare within these subs-groups, it is even more interesting to see how they score across groups. Here is a breakdown of the top 10 vendors based on average score:

As seen above, the top 10 list is heavy with Emerging and High Growth sub-groups without a Titan to be found. While there is a lot of hype for emerging products, this reports gives also weight to their functional value in comparison to more established products. With the emergence of these products has also come vast improvements in mobility, collaboration, cloud, visualization, big data and social, and predictive analytics. Howard Drenser, former Gartner Research Fellow, and President, Founder and Chief Research Officer of DAS , states,

“And these phenomena have made Business Intelligence more complete, more accessible, more usable, more flexible, more scalable and more affordable than ever before. It’s nothing short of a Business Intelligence Renaissance!”

Dresner makes a strong case for this claim with the report itself as well as this interview. Overall the reports provides some great insight into the emerging trends in BI and that there is value that comes with the hype.
