So I’ve been thinking about what makes projects succeed of fail. I’ve seen the results of a number of failures and while you can point to a lot of points, here are some pretty common ones. I put them in no particular order: 1. Poor Total Technology choice In other words, they may have chosen […]

The value of Friends and Followers
So I’ve wrestled with this a bit and had come to the private conclusion that sheer numbers of friends and followers in facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc are not what matters. Following a theme from a previous post, social networking is supposed to make your life easier in some way. In other words, it’s quality not […]
Portals and Integrating Other Applications
After the SSO question, probably one of the most commonly asked questions is, “How do I surface an application or applications on the portal?” It’s an interesting question because there are a lot of options and it all comes down to how deeply you want to integrate it and how much you want to use […]
Value of Social Networking
Recently, I’ve been working with a few clients on the value of Social Networking. Yes, there is value in the “coolness” of this type of thing but very few businesses can claim budget dollars on it being cool. Here are the two biggest case studies that I think can be of value to companies. Help […]

IBM continues to build out and up with their portal. I had the chance to get a sneak preview at the Portal Excellence conference and when talking to Rob Will, Chief Architect and Bill Swatling, Chief Product Manager. Overall, I like where they are going with it. Here’s a couple features that I find cool.

I’ve attached the presentation which walks through starting with a vision and roadmap to actual project manager deployment activities. View on SlideShare
At Portal Excellence Conference this week
I’m at IBM’s Portal Excellence conference this week. It’s IBM’s annual conference focused on the WebSphere Portal product. It’s a great time talk to a lot of people, find out from key IBM’ers what’s happening with the product, and find out where other IBM products will work with WebSphere Portal. I’m also speaking on Tuesday […]
Great Story on Best Buy's Employee Social Network
Again, thanks go to Gary Brooks for tracking this down. This is a great story on how their Blue Shirt Nation (BSN) site got up and running with 20,000 employees. I know this is like telling you the ending of a movie but I’m going to do it anyway. The best part is that they […]

Twelve Best Practices for Online Customer Communities
Gary Brooks at Perficient put me on to this article as he does research for one of our clients. It’s worth reading. The article by Dion Hinchecliffe does a great job summarizing how business can make the best of online communities. It’s definitely a good set of best practices.
