What Makes Houston, Houston?
According to Greater Houston Partnership (yes, Perficient is a proud member of the partnership!): “Over the last two decades, there has been a remarkable transformation in Houston. Today, the nation’s fourth-largest city has become a diverse, vibrant metro filled with talented people who have an undeniable spirit. Our economy is strong, our cultures are many, and our quality of life is second to none. Houston has one of the youngest, fastest-growing and most diverse populations anywhere in the world. One in four of the region’s 7 million residents is foreign-born. From 2010 to 2018, Houston added 1.1 million new residents, an 18.2 percent increase, the fastest rate of population growth among the 10 most populous U.S. Metros.”
Aside from Houston being the home of the Astros, NASA operations, and even Beyoncé, it’s also home to nearly 100 Perficient colleagues.
How is Perficient Making an Impact in the Houston Community?
Across the entire Perficient organization, giving back to the communities in which we live and work is a shared passion. From a local standpoint, our team in Houston has been making its mark in the community. For instance, when John Latham, Managing Director of Houston Operations, stepped into this role in 2022. He was passionate about getting Perficient involved with the Greater Houston Partnership. The purpose of joining the partnership is to work alongside other business leaders to make a positive impact on our region. With our membership, local Perficient colleagues in the Houston area can join and participate in numerous events, committees, resource groups, and more!
Another initiative we’re proud to share is our involvement with the Mark Cuban AI Bootcamps. For the past few years, Perficient has hosted free Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bootcamps for underserved high school students in Houston and Dallas (expanding to include Detroit and St. Louis in 2023). The AI Bootcamp training sessions hosted by Perficient will introduce students to the concepts of AI through educational seminars, interactive lessons, and lab exercises. Our Houston-area colleagues were beyond excited to volunteer and work closely with these local students. Lastly, the team has been know to volunteer with various organizations in the region. For instance, last holiday season, they collected gifts for children fostered at the DePelchin Children Center in Houston. When our Houston-area colleagues come together for a great cause, they definitely make an incredible impact.
What Makes our Company Culture Unique in Houston?
As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, each Perficient office location has its own distinctive culture. So, to better understand what makes our Houston office culture unique, I wanted to reach out to the team and see what they’ve been up to!
During our call, I learned so much about the team. I was joined by John Latham, Managing Director of Houston Operations, Steven Bricker, Portfolio Specialist, Gaby Perez, Talent Acquisition Manager, and Rebecca Kaniss, Technical Architect. A common theme I heard throughout was that they referenced the team as “family” while sharing fun memories and stories together.
The Houston team even has a dedicated “Engagement Committee” that leads many of the culture initiatives at our Houston office! The goal of this committee is to simply bring colleagues together and connect on a more personal level. When working at any organization, some might find themselves just interacting with their immediate team members. So, to combat this, the Houston Engagement Committee creates opportunities for employees to meet other people that they may not get to talk to on a daily basis.
When asked about the engagement committee, the team was ecstatic to share some of the previous events that they had hosted. From escape rooms to trivia nights, these environments are great opportunities that allow colleagues to engage with one another outside of the 9-5!
Looking Ahead
As our Perficient team continues to grow, so does our team in Houston. During my call with the team, Rebecca shared one last piece of information that really stuck with me. When asked about the overall uniqueness of this group of colleagues, she said “You feel like you belong.”
“People” is one of our core values. No matter where our colleagues are located around the globe, they bring diverse perspectives, knowledgeable insights, and dynamic mindsets to our global community.
All this to say, our team in Houston is a close-knit group of individuals that are always eager to make a positive impact both in and out of the office; and we can’t wait to see what they do next! In the meantime, here’s a glance into what they’ve been up to recently:
