A lovely turn of events occurred recently when our office hosted Prakash Chembai, the esteemed vice president of our company. We honoured his promotion and held a lively town hall that day, which made it an exciting and unforgettable event for all those engaged.

The Townhall:

The day kicked off with a spirited town hall, providing an opportunity for employees to engage with our Vice President directly. The town hall served as a platform for open communication, where employees had the chance to ask questions, share insights, and gain valuable perspectives from our organisational leader. The interactive session fostered a sense of transparency and collaboration, reinforcing the strong bond within our professional community.

Celebration:

Adding a touch of warmth to the day, we celebrated the promotion of our vice president. The entire office came together to express gratitude and appreciation for his leadership. Decorations adorned the workspace, and the air was filled with laughter and camaraderie. The celebration showcased the tight-knit culture within our organisation, emphasising the importance of recognising and cherishing the personal milestones of our leaders.

Following the town hall meeting, we held a celebration after conducting an appreciation session to honour our outstanding employees for their significant accomplishments.. The festivities continued with a delicious lunch. The team gathered in a festive setting, enjoying a spread of delectable dishes. This informal setting provided a unique opportunity for employees to interact with the vice president on a more personal level, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

What made you decide to work for Perficient? What makes you stay and want to do your best work?

In all honesty, I ended up at Perficient serendipitously. I was working through a temp agency and was sent to Perficient as a file clerk back when we had an office in Austin, Texas. The assignment was only for six weeks, but after the initial timeframe, I stayed on and was eventually hired. I left the company but returned about a year and a half later. I stayed because I like the culture fostered at Perficient and I have always been treated with professional respect, even when I was just a temporary file clerk.

Thank you for joining me today, Phil, I’d love to kick off with hearing more about your role. What does a typical day in this role look like, and how is this work enabling clients to achieve their goals?

I am often asked to describe my job and what I do. It’s a question that I’ve struggled to answer briefly. I’ve found that my biggest strength is to function like a Swiss army knife for strategic initiatives for a wide variety of healthcare clients, including healthcare plans, providers, and research organizations. Ultimately, I help business clients define, design, coordinate, and deliver effective and efficient solutions (technical or procedural) that impact their most pressing challenges and influence their key performance indicators (KPIs).

Currently, we’re driving an initiative to implement an Amazon Web Services (AWS) analytics and data lake solution to provide our client with a cloud solution built for common publish model (CPM). This will allow the client to quickly access and analyze terabytes of contract, claims, invoiced, and financial transaction data collected, ingested, curated, and published from multiple operational systems.

With the use of powerful AWS tools: S3, Glue, Redshift, and connecting to the industry leading Cognos BI tool, our client has unprecedented access to their data to answer their most pressing analytical questions and drive their current and anticipated future business.

My typical day’s activities depends upon the role in which I’m filling for the specific client and phase of the project. They can include the following:

  • Leading a team of analysts in understanding client business requirements – truly knowing the client’s intent and how we will benefit them upon implementation
  • Facilitating discussions with business, systems, and data architect subject matter experts to expand business requirements, drill into original source systems data, guide design of pipelines into AWS data lake, and assess considerations impacting the CPM design
  • Developing, evaluating, executing, and documenting functional test cases against data lake pipeline, published Redshift database, or Cognos visualization
  • Communicating to client executives and senior project leadership about the progress, risks, and dependencies that must be cleared in order for multiple teams to define, design, and execute the various technical solutions

How have your passions and interests led you to your current position and how are they incorporated into your daily work?

Prior to joining Perficient, I worked as an independent consultant performing design and data analysis for a prominent healthcare solution provider. This experience ignited my fuel for finding unique and out-of-the box solutions to complex business problems. Since then, I’ve teamed up with colleagues to address business challenges.

Here are a few ways we’ve approached this:

  • Responding to the ground-breaking AHA legislation impacting healthcare payer and providers alike
  • Creating a single-solution call center application supporting multiple major healthcare payer organizations, impacting millions of subscribers and members
  • Creating an integrated data warehouse solution to support a major university and cancer hospital to meet research demands and government regulations
  • Creating a new actuarial pricing rating solution for a large healthcare payer

What excites and motivates you in your daily work? 

The things that excite me most about the many roles I’ve had with Perficient are the following:

  • The ability to utilize my strength of understanding business processes and translating them into technical solutions using the most effective suite of solutions.

I recently sat down with one of our senior project managers, Ruby Lin, to discuss the many facets of her role at Perficient. She told me about how she leads teams and facilitates collaboration. We also discussed how her voice and work are appreciated by her team. I loved learning what Ruby values most about her colleagues and her company, and I’m sure you will too.

Ruby, thank you so much for joining me today. I’d love to kick off by hearing more about your role at Perficient. Can you describe a typical day?

I am a senior project manager and a delivery lead for clinical data management. In addition, I manage multiple projects for the clinical data warehouse and pharmacovigilance groups. I am a liaison on the global testing team in the life sciences industry, supporting the sales team in areas involving common data models (CDM) and common data warehousing (CDW). I am also working with the Agile community that is bringing the Agile practice to life sciences.

My typical day is not very different from many other team leads. Most of the time, I’m running to and from internal, external, customer facing, or seller supporting conference calls. When I’m not in a call, I’m leading project and organization teams to ensure they are:

  • Functioning well
  • Being supportive
  • Being innovative

I also help them to resolve challenges and look for growth opportunities.

How did you come to work at Perficient? What motivates you in your everyday work?

I joined Perficient as a part of their acquisition of Biopharm Systems. I went into labor on the day the buy-out was announced. So as long as I remember how old my girls are, I’ll know how long I have been with Perficient.

What motivates me is the fact that I really enjoy what I do and appreciate all the collaboration and support from my teams.

Joy, thank you so much for joining me today. I’d love to kick off by hearing more about the everyday responsibilities associated with your role. What does a typical day of providing value to healthcare clients include? 

I’ve been a strategic account director within Perficient’s healthcare practice for over eight years. In short, I see myself as a matchmaker. It’s my responsibility to understand our customer’s business objectives and match that up with the right mix of experts within Perficient to design and deliver solutions. I stay engaged through delivery at the account level to help make sure our team is supported and that the customer’s needs are met.

When our customers are successful, we’re successful, and that is a repeatable cycle.

Many of my accounts are with long-term customers that we have provided a variety of services to over the years. It’s fun to do quick-hit projects, but I really value and enjoy evolving with our customers as a partner. I feel like an extension of their business.

A typical day includes a nice mix of the following:

  • Having conversations with customers and team members to scope new projects
  • Preparing proposals and contracts
  • Participating in delivery touchpoints to track and support progress

I wanted to work at Perficient because of our customers! Over the last eight years, I’ve gotten to work with so many great leaders in healthcare. I’ve delivered meaningful solutions from customer-focused mobile apps and websites to customer relationship management and enterprise data solutions.

What keeps me at Perficient are the relationships I have with my customers and colleagues and the work that we do together.

My customers and my colleagues have supported me in many ways. I have great memories of reading books with my parents while growing up, and I carried on that tradition with my kids through nightly bedtime stories. This tradition inspired me to write my own children’s book.

I grew up as an Army brat, moving every few years. By the 10th grade, I had attended nine different schools across the U.S., Germany, and Turkey. I had to quickly learn how to adapt as the new kid. My book, “I’m Not in the Mooood,” is about a cow who moves to a new farm. It pays homage to the power of empathy as the other farm animals figure out how to best welcome her. Plus, you get to make fun animal sounds while reading it.

The best part of the experience was the photos I received from friends, family, customers, and my Perficient colleagues of their kids enjoying the book. Every time I got another photo from a Perficient colleague, it warmed my heart so much. We all spend so much time together. We care about the work we do, and we care about each other personally. At any given time, I’ll have a dozen active teams supporting customers.

After over eight years with Perficient, I could make a pretty long list of all the times I’ve seen colleagues step up to help each other inside and outside of work. It’s in our DNA.

How did you begin your career at Perficient, and what makes you excited about the future?

I joined Perficient 13 years ago. This was when we were just beginning to expand our healthcare practice. I was excited about the opportunity and challenge to grow our business while using our capabilities to improve healthcare around the world.

When I’m not serving Perficient as an account executive, my wife, Michelle, and I pour our efforts into the HELP Foundation, an Ohio-based nonprofit that provides homes and assistance for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This foundation was launched in 1965 by parents of special-needs children who saw too few resources to meet their families’ needs. It was not long ago that individuals with special needs – especially those from families lacking resources to help them – faced difficult, solitary lives.

HELP strives to assist individuals starting in early childhood. Young adults receive assistance to finish school, live on their own, and have employment and a social life, among other things.

We have been involved since 2010, when a friend first invited us to visit the program. As parents of children with special needs, we were impressed with the HELP Foundation’s efforts to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are respected and involved members of their communities. The foundation serves hundreds of people annually through group homes, supported apartments, summer programming for students, daytime and vocational programming for adults, and a specialized program for senior citizens.

I currently serve as the President of the Board of Trustees at HELP, where we support pathways that give every individual the chance to thrive and reach their full ability, contributing to a vibrant, inclusive community.

Understanding what an important part of my life my work at Perficient is, I’m proud of the work HELP has done to empower people with special needs to find employment. Although the people get excited about their new source of income, I find the most significant benefit to be the pride that they take in having employment.

Wayne, thank you for joining me today. I’d love to hear about your role as a lead business consultant at Perficient. What does a typical day or project look like for you in this role?

My role can be described as a utility player, which isn’t all that obvious from my title as lead business consultant in our healthcare business unit. I am fortunate to work at the crossroads of my two greatest professional interest areas: technology and healthcare.

I strive to positively impact clients in the advancement of their efforts to service key healthcare audiences online. Audience segments in healthcare primarily include patients and healthcare services beneficiaries. However, these segments can also include a whole slew of related stakeholders like healthcare providers, insured customers, professionals in the payor space, industry partners, caregivers (family members, professionals at home, and clinic-based), and consumers of healthcare products.

A typical day for me doesn’t really exist, and that’s partly why I enjoy my current role at Perficient. My daily activities include the following:

  • Directing program efforts with client leadership
  • Documenting process and decision points
  • Mapping out strategy and providing input on the execution of deliverables
  • Coordinating parties in the execution of a project
  • And sometimes just plain old cheerleading (which is easy to do at Perficient as we often have plenty of project team successes to celebrate)

What motivates you to do your best work?

In my role, I am grateful for the frequent opportunities I have to be heard and have my input received and valued. I greatly value the team support and camaraderie I have experienced while on projects.

I decided to work for Perficient to reach my career goals and expand my experience in a variety of exciting technologies affecting healthcare.

I continue to try and do my best, partially to continue the support of my professional trajectory. However, this is mostly because I am continually renewed and invigorated when I see the effects of my efforts to help real people dealing with real healthcare issues.

In my experience, people are rarely having their best day when they seek medical assistance. I feel my job is to help ease their journey as much as possible by removing barriers to care in the technology space.

I love the fact that I don’t have a typical day. Each day brings its own challenges and opportunities. What do you value most about your role? What makes Perficient special?

As a director in our life sciences practice, I am honored and humbled that our work makes an impact on patient care. It has especially been rewarding during the pandemic, as our team has directly supported trials for one of the COVID-19 vaccines. We are honored to have been a part of that effort. As our team and executive management has stated many times during this pandemic, we are proud of our contributions to helping our clients bring life changing impacts to the world.

In my 22 years of consulting, this is the most talented team I have worked with. They prioritize the goals of our company and our clients above all else, all while supporting each other and myself. How did you come to work for our global digital consultancy? What motivates you to keep providing value to our life sciences clients?

I joined Perficient, like many others, through an acquisition. BioPharm Systems’ culture was incredibly supportive, collaborative, and cohesive. One of the concerns leadership had during the acquisition was a potential culture clash. However, we quickly realized that Perficient’s culture was very much aligned to BioPharm’s culture, and that made for a very smooth transition. That was over 8 years ago, and I just had my 14th anniversary this January.

I enjoy what I do and the impact that we have, but what makes me stay and want to do the best work is the people that work alongside me as we deliver excellence to our clients.

We discussed his recent nomination by Health Enterprises Network to participate in their Healthcare Fellows Class of 2022 as well as ways he gives back to his community through volunteerism with Veteran’s Club Inc.

Marc, thank you so much for joining me today. Can you tell me a little about how you use your expertise to serve our healthcare clients?

I have spent almost two decades in the health payer space. I’m working alongside a very talented group of folks with deep healthcare industry knowledge to lead management consulting engagements. The solutions can stand on their own or complement other offerings.

I enjoy translating the complex and jargon-heavy tech talk of modern business technology into practical day-to-day business-person language. This helps to improve outcomes for the many different constituents that engage with our clients.

I absolutely love using this skill set to help our clients transform their thinking to a more forward looking, future-proof, and consumer-centric mindset that will improve their operations and ultimately, their members’ health and experience.

I value being valued. This sounds cliché, but our team has so many unique personalities and backgrounds. I truly see how my role is a unique and critical piece of the tool kit Perficient employs.

I learn from my co-workers every day. I have gained equally as much as I have contributed. In areas where I have surface level knowledge, colleagues with years of successful experience will support me, and I’ll support them in my areas of expertise.

What initially drew you to a career at Perficient? What keeps you here?

A close friend who works for a client that has interacted with Perficient resources told me about Perficient. He spoke highly of the caliber of individuals and outcomes of their work together, so it was an easy attraction. I want to work somewhere where the reputation speaks for itself.

It is important to me that I can work with clients and recommend what we can support, in good faith that it truly is in their best interest. Congratulations on your selection for the Healthcare Fellows Class of 2022! Tell me more about what it means to achieve this honor and how it will impact your work for Perficient? 

The HEN (Health Enterprises Network) is an organization affiliated with Greater Louisville Inc., which is a “chamber of commerce” of sorts. It was started by the founder of Humana and other organizations that have made a tremendous impact in the healthcare industry and in Louisville, KY. Many people don’t know how many healthcare companies exist in Louisville. It has been the hub of many groundbreaking healthcare ideas and capabilities.

They nominate several candidates to participate in this executive leadership incubator each year, to grow their awareness of Louisville’s healthcare possibilities and broaden their professional network. My experience in the healthcare payer industry, and my recent achievement of becoming a recognized healthcare payer strategist and transformation leader, opened the opportunity for me to add my perspective and background to this year’s cohort. Hopefully, I will be able to deepen relationships with local organizations where we already have a relationship and make introductions – and perhaps become a partner of choice – with even more healthcare organizations in the region.

Marc finds greater fulfillment by giving back

Veteran’s Club is my passion project. As a Marine Corps combat veteran from OIF, I will always have a need and longing to serve alongside those who served our country.

Veterans in my generation are few and have a unique shared bond and experience. One thing we have learned from those that served in the generations before us is that we veterans are best positioned to empathize with and serve our brothers and sisters in arms.  Many organizations are doing great things for veterans, but I think there are none like Veteran’s Club.

I have seen immeasurable accomplishments and lives changed from this organically grown group of local veterans that has become a nationally recognized non-profit service organization.

We are most widely known for our Equine Program, and Veteran’s Club Assistance Program that provides programming, support groups, and clinical and case management support to homeless veterans and veterans going through other times of transition.

Currently, I serve as the Treasurer on what we call a “working” Board of Directors. We call it this because we are all passionate about the work we are doing, and never charge anyone for any program, service, or event. As the Treasurer, I get the pleasure of making sure our budgeting and financing supports our mission.

One of these colleagues is Paddy Cozens, Technical Architect. I recently sat down with Paddy to discuss how he delivers value to our life sciences clients. We also discussed his role as a volunteer firefighter and how he balances his career in IT with the volunteer work he is passionate about.

Thank you for joining me today, Paddy. I’d love to hear more about your role supporting life sciences. How do you provide value to Perficient’s clients in this role?

I am a technical architect working within the healthcare consultancy division. My principal focus is pharmaceutical-centric applications, such as clinical trial patient data recording systems, clinical trial management, and adverse event reporting. My interaction with clients is varied. It can be as simple a help desk ticket for an issue that takes just moments to solve, or it can be a year-long project to upgrade or migrate a customer’s system/data.

My goal is always the same; for the client to see the value Perficient brings, and that the end result will exceed their expectations.

Yes, there will be hurdles and bridges to cross…but as I always tell them, “No matter the rough waters or stony ground we cross, I will without a doubt make them laugh and smile for taking the journey.”

What motivates you in your work at Perficient? 

Along with the day-to-day challenge of thinking outside the box to solve complex problems, my colleagues are without a doubt the single biggest factor that I value about working at Perficient.

The wide range of people I get to meet and collaborate with motivates me. Plus, the individual perspectives, skills, and experiences of the team collectively helps navigate the complex obstacles we encounter daily.

What initially drew you to a career at Perficient and what makes you stay?

My path to Perficient was unexpected, which sounds slightly unusual and needs some clarification. My career with the company came by way of an acquisition. I had been working for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies with over 100,000 employees. Then, I suddenly found myself working at a much smaller company (under 100 employees).

This company was then acquired by Perficient. I went from a big company to a whole new environment in a short period of time, which was a bit of a shock to the system. Once I had adjusted, I found myself enjoying the freedom that came with working in a less siloed environment. It enabled me to work more horizontally, which gives me a broader view of the environment and more holistic input and impact. This, along with the diverse group of people that I get to interact with, inspires me to do my best work.

Can you tell us a little about your contributions as a volunteer firefighter? How did you get involved in volunteering and what motivates you to continue?

Since coming to the U.S. from England, I have become a collector of boats. One of the new phrases I heard in the U.S. was “He who dies with the most toys wins!” With this ideology, I jumped in with both feet! For the first time in my life, I had what my new boss described as “disposable income” (an expression/situation I never heard or had in England). Thus, I became a collector of things: boats, cars, motorbikes, etc. My wife has since put a quash on this madness (I think it is called an intervention!). However, the last collection to suffer these spousal cutbacks were the multiple boats in the yard.

This led to a knock on the door one day: “Hi, I am Deputy Chief of the local fire department. We need new members, especially to help crew our fire boat. I see you have a few boats, and we really need someone with marine and boat knowledge.” I had to laugh as I replied, “I think the number of boats in my yard actually demonstrates that I know nothing about boats”. But it was 6 p.m. and I had a glass of wine in hand. So I let him over the threshold for further talks, and he twisted my arm.

Now, I am Captain of the department, an EMT, a pilot/engineer on a fire boat that forms part of a coastal marine group for search, rescue, and other emergencies, in an area within the Long Island Sound. Unfortunately, this came late in my life. I wish I had done it a lot younger. The rewards are beyond imagination. The people I have met, both within EMS response and from the interactions with the public/patients, are life changing.

Nobody calls upon my department’s services when they’re having a “good day,” indeed they are probably having their worst! How ironic it is that in kindergarten, on dress-up Friday, I would fight everybody to take the fireman’s costume home for the weekend. Forty-five years later, I got a real outfit! I even get to drive and pilot some great toys. A 40,000-pound fire engine and a 16,000-pound fire boat are every boy’s dream! I would encourage everyone to offer up some time to give back in any way possible. It will change your life!

How do you balance a career in IT with serving your community? 

Working at Perficient is challenging and rewarding every day. The nature of my job means that I am always solving problems, and they are usually urgent.

What makes it enjoyable is the people I work with, the relationships I build, and the teamwork and camaraderie to problem-solve together.

My job gives me the ability to be creative (technologically). It allows me to strike a balance with my personal life where I’m creative in other ways. I love to cook (my wife calls it making a mess!), I will tackle any household breakdown (you have to love YouTube), I even built a car (the one toy my wife loves). I’m also able to give back to my community.

I recently connected with one of our senior project managers, Inna Suarez, to discuss what it’s like to serve Perficient’s healthcare clients. We discussed what Inna values most about Perficient’s culture and her team. I loved hearing Inna’s thoughts on what makes the Perficient community special, and I’m sure you will too.

Inna, thank you so much for joining me today. Can you tell me a bit about how you serve our clients? 

I’m a senior project manager and Scrum master, currently working with one of the largest health insurers in the United States.

With extensive knowledge of both Waterfall and Agile methodologies, I help our client to deliver high visibility projects, while keeping them on track and on budget.

My typical day would start on a Scrum call with my team to discuss the day’s goals, blockers, and dependencies. The rest of the day is usually filled with various meetings to ensure the team stays on track. As a Scrum master, I work to raise Agile awareness across teams, share best practices, and educate those who are not yet familiar with Agile.

What do you value most about your community and responsibilities at Perficient?

I like how the healthcare unit has built a community of professionals who are both knowledgeable about healthcare and willing to share their knowledge with other team members.

I value the people on my team. I am very proud to be surrounded by smart, enthusiastic, and creative individuals.

While working with our clients, I value helping them solve day-to-day problems and build quality solutions. I also like the ability to wear different hats (like project manager, Scrum master, Agile coach, etc.).

What do you value most about Perficient’s culture?

I like that Perficient challenges me to learn new things. Above all, I like to meet new people and make new friends. Perficient gives me the opportunity to work with different clients and take on new projects. I value that Perficient creates an inclusive environment that attracts talent of any age, race, gender, etc.

As a senior project manager, I am responsible for the overall delivery of an engagement. This includes contractual deliverables, building customer relationships, and founding a strong team. This is specifically important with our core team culture.

Our culture puts people first above all things, regardless of whether it’s a client or Perficient employee.

My typical day involves a quick review of all deliverables, a discussion of risks and mitigation, and a meeting to review, correct issues and plan for the future.

The movie quote “Winners always want the ball” summarizes the attitude I have towards my role. I love to get things done and done well, helping others along the way if I can.
