Perficient Recognized in The Forrester Wave™: Customer Experience Strategy Consulting Services, Q4 2024

Perficient is proud to be included as a “Contender” in The Forrester Wave™: Customer Experience (CX) Strategy Consulting Services, Q4 2024 report. We were one of a set of only twelve organizations to be included in the report.

Forrester used extensive criteria to determine placement, including customer research, proprietary data offerings, and innovation.

To us, this placement shows our continued growth in CX Strategy Consulting services over the last year, as we previously were included among 31 organizations in The Forrester Customer Experience Strategy Consulting Services Landscape, Q2 2024 report.

We believe CX strategy capabilities and experience are at the heart of the report. With brands stretching across digital and physical properties, building an omnichannel customer experience can seem daunting. Partnering with an experienced consulting partner provides a strategic and custom approach, enabling organizations to implement digital transformation that activates and engages their customers at every touchpoint, while meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

Across all industries, customers expect positive omnichannel experiences, and brands that fall short of these expectations will not only miss out on current revenue, but also risk future sales due to negative perception and reputation challenges.

Digital Transformation Focused

Perficient believes its inclusion is a testament to our expertise leveraging digital capabilities to build seamless, personalized, and satisfying customer journeys.

According to the Forrester report, “Perficient is a good fit for organizations that want to center their CX strategy on a digital transformation.”

Our CX Strategy work empowers clients to make informed decisions about investing in and implementing solutions across both digital and non-digital channels. We also offer many types of services that are not specific to digital delivery. These include consulting on CX operations, governance, goal setting, team training and customer empathy development. These activities are designed to foster the growth and maturity of our clients’ organizations so they can serve their customers more effectively.

As the Forrester report mentions, “Reference customers praised Perficient’s flexibility and its willingness to be a true partner working alongside their employees.”

Perficient Experts Interviewed for Forrester Report on Accessibility for Better CX & EX https://blogs.perficient.com/2024/10/02/perficient-experts-interviewed-for-forrester-report-on-accessibility-for-better-cx-ex/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2024/10/02/perficient-experts-interviewed-for-forrester-report-on-accessibility-for-better-cx-ex/#respond Wed, 02 Oct 2024 17:20:11 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=370068

Spurred by recent AI advances and improvements made during the global pandemic, accessibility has become an integral component to an increasingly digital-first world. Ensuring that technology is accessible for everyone should be a high priority for all digital properties.

Providing an outstanding experience for both customers and employees is crucial for business success, and directly meeting these needs opens opportunities for organizations to reach new markets and up to two billion people with disabilities.

One often overlooked aspect of creating these exceptional experiences is the procurement and implementation of accessible technologies and services. By prioritizing accessibility, organizations can foster inclusivity, boost satisfaction, and unlock the full potential of their workforce and customer base. Additionally, committing to digital accessibility better positions organizations to attract and retain the best talent. Perficient experts were recently interviewed for a Forrester article, Prioritize Accessibility In Procurement For Better CX And EX, which outlines best practices for procuring accessible technologies and services.

Accessibility Should Be a Factor in Procurement

In the report, Forrester cites 2023 data showing “that just 47% of design pros at companies that have people working on accessibility say that their organization considers accessibility when evaluating potential services or technology vendors.”  These brands are not only doing a disservice to their employees and customers, but they’re missing opportunities to provide higher-quality experiences for a large portion of the population.

Inclusive procurement is an important dimension of effectively implementing accessibility. For organizations with the goal of winning and retaining consumers and talent, selecting a procurement service that fits your needs, culture, and accessibility objectives is more than a nice to have, it’s an imperative.”

Lisa McMichael, Senior Manager Digital Accessibility, Perficient

Accessible Procurement Elevates Experiences for Customers and Employees

Forrester outlines why high-quality experiences are beneficial to both customers and employees, stating that:

  • “Accessible technology is critical for creating an inclusive and equitable workplace.
  • Addressing accessibility concerns through accommodations is not enough.
  • Most organizations rely on vendors to deliver components of their Customer Experience.
  • Accessibility is only a competitive advantage if your vendors are also accessible.”

From Accessibility to Profitability: Maximizing ROI with Inclusive Digital Practices https://blogs.perficient.com/2024/06/21/maximizing-roi-with-inclusive-digital-accessibility/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2024/06/21/maximizing-roi-with-inclusive-digital-accessibility/#comments Fri, 21 Jun 2024 13:00:49 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=364729

In today’s competitive digital landscape, creating an inclusive digital accessible environment is not only a legal and moral obligation but a strategic business advantage as well. According to the World Health Organization, 16% of the global population has some type of disability; this translates further into an ROI impact, with a reported 70% of disabled users exiting a site they find challenging to navigate. When interviewed, 40% of users who experienced issues when interacting with a company’s digital experience indicated that they would visit a competitor’s site if it had better accessibility support. That last statistic targets email campaigns opened on mobile devices, but we can extrapolate a correlation with the overall user experience.

Increasing Key Metric Conversions

Accessibility is crucial in driving key metric conversions, offering substantial and measurable business benefits beyond compliance. By creating an accessible digital environment, companies can enhance user engagement, reduce bounce rates, and foster customer loyalty, contributing to higher conversion rates.

  • Higher Conversion Rates: Accessible websites are more user-friendly, which can lead to higher conversion rates. Higher conversion rates are the measure of the success of any digital experience; they are the pinnacle action of how a brand wants to onboard customers. Vanity metrics, such as number of visitors, page views, etc. is great and provide value, but the key conversion translates indirectly into business value. According to a study by PayPal, sites with clear and accessible primary conversion engagement reduce friction for users. Resulting in more completed transactions.
  • Reduced Bounce Rates: Similar to higher conversion rates, an accessible site retains visitors longer. Users who can navigate a site quickly and find the information they need without barriers are less likely to leave immediately. Longer time on site translates to lower bounce rates and contributes to better overall site performance and user satisfaction.
  • Increased Customer Retention: The cost of retaining a customer is lower than the cost of new customer acquisition. Accessibility fosters long-term customer relationships. Users are more likely to return when they can rely on a site to meet their needs. This loyalty translates into repeat business and sustained revenue growth. Companies that prioritize accessibility often see higher customer retention rates.

The Business Value of Digital Accessibility

An ongoing accessibility plan for the digital experience provides benefits beyond just the maintained digital platform. It impacts the overall brand perception both in the digital and non-digital spaces. In short, a strong accessibility plan can influence and strengthen the customer’s perception of the brand overall.

  • Expanded Market Reach: By implementing accessibility practices, businesses can tap into an underserved market segment. Referring to the statistics at the start of this article, the brand must be the competitor capturing potential business leaving non-accessible sites.
  • Boosted Brand Reputation: Adopting accessibility practices not only demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity but also has the potential to enhance a brand’s reputation significantly. Companies known for their inclusive practices often enjoy greater customer loyalty and positive word-of-mouth. Brands like Apple and Microsoft are celebrated for their accessibility efforts, contributing to their robust and loyal customer bases. Imagine the growth and success your brand could achieve by following in their footsteps.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Accessibility improvements not only cater to users with disabilities but also enhance usability for everyone. Features such as scalable fonts, straightforward navigation, and voice commands can significantly improve the overall user experience. For instance, video captions benefit those in noisy environments and those learning a new language. Visualize the increased customer satisfaction and loyalty your business could gain by making these simple yet impactful changes.
  • Improved SEO and Increased Traffic: Accessibility features can also improve search engine optimization (SEO). While search engines do not expressly state that accessibility is a ranking factor, they do take into account engagement rates. Digital experiences that are more accessible tend to have higher user engagement, such as time on site and lowered bounce rates.
  • Reduced Maintenance Costs: Accessible digital experiences generally have well-written code and markup. This facilitates upgrade paths and lowers ongoing developmental maintenance costs.

Practical Steps for Implementing Digital Accessibility

Accessibility is like any other digital marketing type of engagement in that it is an ongoing cycle of review, improvement, measurement, and repeat. The lower ongoing development costs discussed previously should be reinvested into maintaining a robust accessibility engagement. Develop actionable strategies for conducting accessibility audits, integrating accessibility into the development process, and supporting continuous improvement to ensure a brand’s digital platforms remain inclusive and user-friendly.

  • Conducting Accessibility Audits: The first step in improving accessibility is understanding the current state of your digital platform. Conducting an accessibility audit using tools like Monsido and Google Lighthouse can help identify areas that need improvement and provide a roadmap for making necessary changes.
  • Integrating Accessibility into the Development Process: Accessibility should be considered from the beginning of any development, not an after-thought. Including designing with accessibility in mind and ensuring all new content meets accessibility standards.Additionally, integration of accessibility practices should include anyone on staff creating and writing content.  An accessible approved style guide should be developed and enforced.
  • Continuous Improvement and Monitoring: Accessibility is not a one-time project but an ongoing commitment. Regular updates and user feedback are essential for maintaining high accessibility standards. A strong partner in growth, such as Perficient, can help implement a brand’s ongoing accessibility strategy.

Investing in accessibility is a strategic move that goes beyond legal compliance. It enhances user experience, expands market reach, improves SEO, and builds brand loyalty, increasing profitability and ROI. Business managers and marketers should prioritize accessibility to maximize their digital platforms’ potential and ensure long-term success. A targeted approach to ongoing accessibility. Leveraging Digital Agencies’ expertise, such as Perficient, can help build a roadmap that provides strong ROI for the value invested.

Digital Accessibility is Critical to Automotive UX https://blogs.perficient.com/2023/10/25/accessibility-in-automotive-the-freedom-to-drive/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2023/10/25/accessibility-in-automotive-the-freedom-to-drive/#respond Wed, 25 Oct 2023 16:50:21 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=347034

Digital Accessibility Is Critical to Automotive UX

Automotive companies are faced with so many challenges as the industry evolves faster than ever – yet a problem that has plagued them for ages continues to stick around: accessibility. While the younger generations stay in focus as the consumers to delight with new products and services, the older generations are living longer lives and hold significant buying power. In response, OEMs, dealers, and automotive suppliers should all evaluate their offerings in the light that they could be used by someone of any age and in any life situation. In other words, these products and services need to adapt to their users, not demand that the user adapt to them.

In a discussion with Lisa McMichael, senior manager of our digital accessibility practice, I learned so much about the history of accessibility in automotive and where it can be applied in today’s exciting environment. The fact that the popular feature cruise control was originally invented by someone who really needed to to assist his driving ability is just one example of how powerful it is to be accessible and inclusive: everyone can benefit.

Above all else, take away these key things:

  1. Accessibility is for everyone – we all experience different life stages, temporary or permanent situations that affect our abilities, and have different preferences.
  2. Accessibility is a critical part of customer experience and proper design.
  3. Accessibility is great for SEO, as it helps search engines crawl websites and also reinforces best practices that improve rankings.
  4. Enforcement is coming soon from governments around the world by 2025 that global organizations must comply with or pay heavy fines, so it is strongly advised that organizations find experienced partners to improve accessibility as soon as possible.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), also known as Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs), are technologies that facilitate direct communication between the human brain and external devices, such as computers or robotic systems. BCIs interpret neural signals, allowing users to control devices, communicate, and interact with their environment solely through their thoughts.

How BCIs Work

Neural Signals: BCIs use sensors, typically placed on the scalp or within the brain itself, to detect and record neural signals such as electroencephalograms (EEG) or electrocorticograms (ECoG).

Signal Processing: Advanced algorithms analyze these neural signals, identifying patterns associated with specific commands or intentions.

Control: Users can then control external devices, like computer cursors, robotic arms, or communication systems, by modulating their brain activity.

Applications and Impact

The potential applications of BCIs are vast and transformative:

  1. Communication: BCIs enable individuals with severe speech disabilities to communicate through text or speech synthesis systems by selecting letters or words using their brain signals.
  2. Motor Control: BCIs offer mobility and independence to individuals with limited or no physical mobility by controlling wheelchairs, robotic arms, or computer interfaces.
  3. Quality of Life: BCIs enhance the quality of life by allowing individuals to perform daily tasks, like turning on lights or adjusting room temperature, with their thoughts.
  4. Therapeutic Use: BCIs have shown promise in neurological rehabilitation, aiding stroke or spinal cord injury patients in regaining movement and function.

Challenges and Advancements

While BCIs hold incredible promise, they also face challenges:

  1. Complexity: BCIs require significant training to operate effectively, and users must adapt to the technology.
  2. Invasive vs. Non-Invasive: Invasive BCIs, implanted directly into the brain, offer greater precision but come with surgical risks. Non-invasive BCIs are safer but may have limitations in terms of signal quality.
  3. Communication Speed: BCIs have room for improvement in terms of communication speed, with some systems currently being slower than traditional methods.

Recent advancements in BCIs aim to address these challenges:

  1. Miniaturization: Smaller and more portable BCIs are in development, making them more accessible for daily use.
  2. Neural Interface Innovation: Researchers are working on novel neural interfaces, including nanotechnology-based solutions, to improve signal quality.
  3. Machine Learning: Advanced machine learning algorithms are enhancing BCI accuracy and communication speed.

Brain-Computer Interfaces represent a remarkable frontier in assistive technology, empowering individuals with severe disabilities to regain control and communicate effectively through their thoughts. While challenges exist, ongoing research and development are expanding the possibilities of BCIs. With further refinement, increased accessibility, and broader adoption, BCIs hold the promise of revolutionizing the lives of those with motor and speech disabilities, unlocking new levels of independence, communication, and participation in society.

Navigating Digital Accessibility: The Power of Landmarks and Correct Markup https://blogs.perficient.com/2023/06/14/navigating-digital-accessibility-the-power-of-landmarks-and-correct-markup/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2023/06/14/navigating-digital-accessibility-the-power-of-landmarks-and-correct-markup/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2023 16:07:34 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=337765

In the realm of digital accessibility, landmarks and correct markup serve as the backbone of an inclusive and user-friendly web experience. By understanding the significance of landmarks and implementing them with proper markup using  HTML and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications), we can ensure that websites and applications are accessible to all individuals, regardless of their abilities. In this article, we will delve into the importance of landmarks, explore their role in digital accessibility, and learn how to utilize them effectively through HTML and ARIA attributes.

Understanding Landmarks and Their Role in Digital Accessibility

Landmarks are structural elements within a web page that define its organization and provide clear navigational cues. These landmarks, such as headers, footers, navigation bars, main content areas, and sidebars, help users navigate and comprehend the content more easily. In the context of digital accessibility, landmarks play a crucial role in assisting individuals who rely on assistive technologies, such as screen readers, to navigate and understand web content.

Landmarks provide the following benefits in digital accessibility

Improved Navigation

By properly implementing landmarks, we create a logical structure that enables users to navigate through a webpage’s sections more efficiently. Individuals with visual impairments or cognitive disabilities heavily rely on screen readers to access content. Landmarks act as signposts, allowing them to skip directly to relevant sections, eliminating the need to traverse through irrelevant content.

Contextual Understanding

Landmarks provide important contextual information about the purpose and structure of different sections within a webpage. When marked up correctly, assistive technologies announce the landmark name, aiding users in understanding the overall layout and purpose of the webpage. This contextual understanding facilitates comprehension and enhances interaction with the content.

Screen Reader Efficiency

Properly marked landmarks enhance the efficiency of screen reader usage. Users can navigate directly to the desired sections, bypass repetitive content, and access crucial information without having to go through the entire page. By streamlining the content consumption process, landmarks make it easier for individuals with disabilities to locate and consume relevant information quickly.

Utilizing Landmarks and Correct Markup with HTML and ARIA

HTML and ARIA provide powerful tools for implementing landmarks and enhancing digital accessibility. Let’s explore how we can use them effectively:

HTML5 Semantic Elements:  HTML5 introduced a set of semantic elements that help define the structure and purpose of different sections within a webpage. For instance, the <header>, <footer>, <nav>, and <main> elements can be used to mark up the corresponding sections.

Here are some commonly used types of landmarks:

  1. Header: The header landmark typically contains the branding, logo, site title, and primary navigation of a webpage. It serves as the introductory section and provides essential information about the website.
  2. Footer: The footer landmark is placed at the bottom of a webpage and typically includes copyright information, legal notices, contact details, and additional navigation links. It serves as a closing section and offers supplementary information or actions.
  3. Navigation: The navigation landmark represents the primary navigation menu of a website. It contains links to various pages or sections within the website and helps users navigate to different areas.
  4. Main: The main landmark denotes the main content area of a webpage. It holds the primary content, such as articles, blog posts, or product descriptions. It should only be used once per page to define the central focus of the content.
  5. Aside: The aside landmark represents secondary content or supplementary information that is related to the main content but not directly part of it. It can include sidebar elements, advertisements, or additional resources.
  6. Complementary: The complementary landmark signifies content that is indirectly related to the main content but enhances it. This can include related articles, suggestions, or additional information that provides a broader context.
  7. Search: The search landmark represents the search functionality on a website. It allows users to enter keywords or queries and retrieve relevant information within the website.
  8. Form: The form landmark indicates a section of a webpage that contains a form. This includes input fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown menus, and submission buttons. It assists users in interacting with and submitting data.
  9. Article: The article landmark represents a self-contained composition, such as a blog post, news article, or forum post. It contains distinct content that can be independently distributed or referenced.
  10. Region: The region landmark defines a generic section within a webpage that doesn’t fit into any specific landmark type. It can be used to identify custom or unique sections that require accessibility support.

These are some common types of landmarks that developers can use to structure web content and enhance digital accessibility. Properly implemented landmarks contribute to a more organized, navigable, and inclusive web experience for all users, particularly those relying on assistive technologies.

ARIA Landmark Roles:

ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes can be used to enhance the functionality and accessibility of landmarks. The role attribute, combined with the appropriate landmark roles, helps identify and describe different sections within a webpage. For example, the role="banner" can be used to define the header, role="navigation" for the navigation menu, and role="main" for the main content area. By specifying these landmark roles, we provide explicit instructions to assistive technologies and improve the overall accessibility of the webpage.

Here are Some Commonly Used ARIA Landmark Roles:

  1. role=”banner”: Indicates the landmark represents a banner or header section typically containing site branding, logos, and primary navigation.
  2. role=”navigation”: Identifies the landmark as a navigation menu, providing links to various pages or sections within the website.
  3. role=”main”: Specifies the landmark as the main content area of a webpage. It contains the primary content, such as articles, blog posts, or product descriptions.
  4. role=”complementary”: Indicates a section that is indirectly related to the main content but enhances it. This can include related articles, suggestions, or additional information that provides a broader context.
  5. role=”contentinfo”: Represents the landmark as supplementary information, typically found in the footer section of a webpage. It can include copyright information, legal notices, or contact details.
  6. role=”search”: Identifies the landmark as a search functionality or search form on a webpage. It allows users to enter keywords or queries and retrieve relevant information within the website.
  7. role=”form”: Specifies a section as a form, which contains input fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown menus, and submission buttons. It helps users interact with and submit data.
  8. role=”region”: Represents a generic section within a webpage that doesn’t fit into any specific landmark role. It can be used to identify custom or unique sections that require accessibility support.

ARIA Descriptive Attributes:

In addition to landmark roles, ARIA provides descriptive attributes that further enhance accessibility.

Here are Some Commonly Used ARIA Descriptive Attributes for Landmarks:

  1. aria-label: This attribute allows you to provide a concise text alternative that describes the purpose or function of a landmark. It is particularly useful when a landmark does not have visible text or when the existing text is not sufficient to convey its meaning.

Example: <nav aria-label="Primary Navigation">...</nav>

  1. aria-labelledby: The aria-labelledby attribute associates a landmark with an element on the page that serves as its label. The labeled element provides a descriptive text that helps users understand the purpose or content of the landmark.

Example: <main aria-labelledby="main-heading">...</main> <h1 id="main-heading">Main Content</h1>

  1. aria-describedby: This attribute links a landmark to an element that provides additional descriptive information about the landmark. It can be used to reference an element that elaborates on the content or purpose of the landmark.

Example: <aside aria-describedby="sidebar-description">...</aside> <p id="sidebar-description">Additional information and related resources</p>

By using these ARIA descriptive attributes, you can provide more detailed information about landmarks, making them more informative and accessible to individuals using assistive technologies. These attributes contribute to a comprehensive and inclusive browsing experience, allowing users with disabilities to navigate and understand web content more effectively.

Landmarks and correct markup using  HTML and ARIA are integral components of digital accessibility. By implementing landmarks, we enable users with disabilities to navigate and comprehend web content more effectively. By utilizing HTML5 semantic elements and ARIA attributes, we can mark up landmarks with clear roles, labels, and descriptions, ensuring an inclusive and user-friendly web experience. Let us embrace the power of landmarks and correct markup to create a digital landscape that caters to the diverse needs of all individuals, fostering accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for everyone.
