5 Innovation Trends to be Thankful For

Thanksgiving is here again, complete with family, food, and football. With the festive holiday season not far behind, this is the time of year to count blessings and be grateful for all the things that we have.

It’s been a great year for innovation trends as well, with organizations finding more ways than ever to accelerate technology transformation. Here are the five things that we find ourselves thankful for as we munch on our turkey during this holiday season.

  1. DevOps Adoption is Increasing: According to IDC’s 2018 Futurescape report, 80% of Fortune 1000 companies will conduct at least one task in the Cloud by 2021. Any organizations still leveraging more traditional development methods will find themselves behind if they don’t adopt soon.
  2. The Arrival of Low-Code: We’ve watched for several years now as organizations struggle to obtain the talent to create innovation. Thankfully, that’s all changing soon with the arrival of low-code solutions, which comes with the promise of allowing everyone to contribute to innovative projects.
  3. Open Source is Being Embraced: Proprietary solutions have seen their day but those times may be coming to a close. According to IDC, development tools based on open source software (OSS) will lead to an increase in language agnosticism and gravitation to a core set of 3–5 best of breed languages by 2021. For many enterprises, the cost of innovation is only decreasing.
  4. Platform Solutions are Being Embraced: Many organizations are also moving their innovation talents to platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solutions, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. IDC predicts that by 2021, enterprise applications will shift towards agile architecture with 80% of application development on PaaS platforms using microservices and cloud functions.
  5. The Monolithic Architecture is Finally Changing: The adoption of platform solutions means that we should also be grateful for the transition from monolithic architecture to microservices and APIs, and containers. In simplifying the development of new innovations, organizations can go to market faster while re-using these connectors for similar solutions, reducing technical challenges.
