Trends Tuesday: Factors Preventing Cloud Adoption

According to IDC, cloud growth is expected to continue growing through 2021 at a compound annual growth rate of 21%. While industry watchers assume that cloud is an afterthought, some organizational leaders are skeptical, preferring to go other routes in their pursuit of innovation. In our conversations with customers, this skepticism originates from a few areas, including:

  1. Leveraging the Right Tools: There are many solutions on the market including those within the IBM suite, which can be overwhelming to technology leaders. That’s why it is important for the appropriate vetting and understanding of how tools fit within a particular strategy before cloud adoption happens.
  2. Which Cloud is Appropriate? Public cloud is a success story for many organizations but not for everyone. When cloud is a bad fit, it creates even more problems than originally intended. Leaders should consider all of the choices on the market including hybrid cloud or deconstruction of applications into APIs if possible.
  3. Translatable Past Successes: Just because something worked on private cloud may not necessarily mean translatable success into the public cloud. The cloud requires different thinking, especially when it comes to application availability where redundancy is built into many services or where services must be provisioned and deployed across different availability zones. Sometimes it’s all about knowing where to provision so the organization saves money.

What Does This Mean For You?

Cloud adoption challenges are real and it’s important to overcome them early on in the process. Otherwise, there will be difficulty adopting other technologies and methods including artificial intelligence and DevOps. Whether it’s choosing the right tools or applying past success into future results, having the appropriate best practices and excellence metrics in place enables a smoother transition.
