Modern Cloud and the Impact on Digital Transformation

Modern business moves faster than ever, with more access than ever to innovative hardware and software solutions. To counteract the competitive landscape, savvy business executives must do what they can to adjust to changing climates and remain adaptable through technology and strategy.

As a result of these changes, many businesses are considering cloud computing solutions to augment their day-to-day activities. Much like how the rise of the personal computer contributed to digital transformation through increased efficiency, creativity, and automation in the late 20th century, the cloud promises to do the same in the 21st century. Industry numbers appear to support this trend, with RightScale reporting a 31% adoption rate for enterprise private cloud and research firm Gartner indicating that 25% of firms will employ a DevOps strategy.

The Catalyst of Cloud
The ecosystem of cloud computing is complex, containing numerous possibilities and influenced by numerous business cases. Successful adoption of cloud requires careful organizational assessment, inventory of skills, and employee readiness in order to maximize investment. Savvy leaders understand that cloud plays a critical part in an organization’s drive to affect external change on the market and influence the way work gets done internally, regardless of business function.

Besides letting employees do their best work, cloud enables digital transformation by allowing organizations to compete on innovation. Many DevOps teams have adopted cloud, employing a hybrid strategy, which is a mixture of private and public cloud solutions enabling more effective and automated technology development, management, and deployment. Many DevOps cloud solutions also make room for application programming interfaces, or APIs, which allow for the integration of complementary technologies to create innovative solutions.

Finally, cloud affects digital transformation by allowing organizations to remain agile, changing the way organizations manage and record their assets. Cloud solutions allow organizations to relinquish the need to update their software and hardware solutions, leaving the task to the vendor. On the financial end, cloud offers bottom-line flexibility, granting organizations the ability to transfer their costs from capital to operational expenditures. This benefit is especially amplified during periods of irregular technology usage or economic calamity.

The Future of Cloud
Cloud is expected to play an even larger role in organizational influence and digital transformation for the years ahead as more organizations realize the benefits. For savvy leaders, the present is the best time to explore how cloud technologies serve customers, but also how to keep current employees engaged. By our estimations, the ride is only beginning.
