Explicit vs Implicit – Your Team Can’t Read Minds https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/11/25/explicit-vs-implicit-communication/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/11/25/explicit-vs-implicit-communication/#respond Tue, 25 Nov 2025 14:11:51 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=388603

We’ve all been there. Parents rushing out the door yelling, “Time to go!” Everyone piles into the car only to realize one kid forgot their jacket and the other never combed their hair. Frustrating! But where you feel frustration lies opportunity. An opportunity to communicate better by being explicit with our desires instead of implicit.

The same thing happens at work. You’re in a meeting and the key stakeholder says, “We should really do this thing better.” Sounds like action, right? But it is not! “we should” is a slippery slope because no one owns it. It sounds like progress, but it’s really just wishful thinking.

Implicit Statements

People, and even entire cultures, communicate in different ways. Some people are extroverted, others introverted. Where some are playful, others are serious.

While it’s far from universal, most people I’ve worked with lean toward implicit communication, especially in verbal conversations. And this is a problem. Implicit statements create confusion in projects, relationships, and life – regardless of your natural tendencies.

Many assume that being explicit sounds bossy or demanding. In reality, explicit communication isn’t controlling, it’s clarifying!

Why Implicit Communication Fails

Consider a statement like: “We need to do better at communicating.” Sounds clear and to the point, right? But it’s not. It certainly is short, polite, feels collaborative, and suggests improvement. But let’s break it down:

  • “we” = Undefined responsibility. It sounds like teamwork, which is great in theory, but once the meeting ends, each person assumes “we” means someone else.
  • “need to” = Wishful thinking. Why do we need to? What happens if we don’t? What if it takes a year or two?
  • “do better” = Lack of expectation. People don’t share the same mental model. One person thinks 10% better, another imagines 10x better. And then there’s that one guy who thinks, “We’re fine. No changes needed.
  • “at communicating” = Vague. Are we talking about meetings? What about in emails? Or maybe they mean documentation, or work item ticket comments. What exactly isn’t working well right now?

Implicit language feels soft and nice, but it leaves too much room for interpretation and disconnect.

Explicit Directions

I earned my Eagle Scout rank when I was 16 years old. Those lessons have stuck with me through the years, and now that I’m a parent I’m relearning them as my kids go through Scouting. Recently, I sat in on a First Aid merit badge class with my youngest son, and the difference between implicit and explicit communication was made abundantly clear.

Picture an accident scene. A take-charge bystander shouts, “Someone call 911!” This sounds urgent, but it’s dangerously vague. Who is “someone”? Each second after an accident is critical, where uncertainty can cost lives. What if a dozen people nearby end up calling 911 at once? This is not good.

Instead, emergency preparedness training teaches us to be specific: “Sam, call 911!” Or, if you don’t know their name, point to them, make eye contact, even touch their shoulder and say, “You need to call 911!” Explicit directions save time, prevent confusion, and get results.

Why Explicit Communication Succeeds

Explicit communication gets things done. If tasks aren’t clearly assigned, nothing happens. That’s why project managers use RACI charts. These spell out who’s responsible and accountable, as well as who should be consulted and informed.

Being explicit creates a shared vision, prevents rework, and shortens timelines. When you leave details up to interpretation, someone will spend days perfecting something you didn’t want. We’ve all been there: you follow vague direction, deliver what you think is perfect, and then redo everything because expectations weren’t aligned.

Clear expectations reduce frustration. When two parties are upset, it’s almost always because something was left unsaid earlier. Even the smallest misunderstanding can spiral into an emotional mess.

6 Practical Communication Tips

  1. Replace Vague Language – Be specific and targeted. Instead of, “We should update the deck.” Say, “Tara, update the deck with our new capabilities slides by end of day Thursday.
  2. Assign Ownership – Make it clear who is responsible. Example: “Alex, we need you to take lead on this.
  3. Include Timeframes – Set expectation or urgency. Instead of, “We need to have this ASAP.” Try, “Jane, at the very latest we need a final draft by noon on Tuesday. Sooner is better.
  4. Provide Context – Explain the “why” for relevance. Example: “Bill, the new component has to be built and tested by end of month so that it can be in production ahead of the new regulations taking affect.
  5. Confirm Understanding – Restate the desire and align. Instead of, “Abbey tells us that she’ll need 40 hours for this.” Rephrase it for confirmation like, “Abbey, you said you need 40 hours for this, so I think that means you need a week, right?
  6. Reiterate Assignments & Next Steps – End communications with a concise action plan. Example: “Next steps will be Todd getting legal approval by end of week, and then Sarah getting VP signatures by next Wednesday.

Conclusion

Be clear. Be concise. Be explicit.

People aren’t mind readers! Drop the belief that being direct is a negative personality trait. It’s not bossy, it’s simply good communication.

Even if you’re emailing someone who “gets it,” think about what happens if that email is forwarded to someone else. Will the next person understand what you mean? Explicit communication isn’t just for now, it’s for anyone who might read it or hear it later.

Your Homework: Reach out today to that friend that always says, “We should do lunch sometime,” but you never do. This time, be explicit:

Hey, do you have time for lunch in the next couple weeks?

Bonus Points: Be intentional with it. Schedule your priorities.

Would you be opposed to me putting a recurring monthly lunch on your calendar?

……

If you are looking for a partner who can be explicit and get things done, reach out to your Perficient account manager or use our contact form to begin a conversation.

A Day of Culture, Celebration, and Cricket at Perficient Bangalore https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/09/29/a-day-of-culture-celebration-and-cricket-at-perficient-bangalore/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/09/29/a-day-of-culture-celebration-and-cricket-at-perficient-bangalore/#respond Mon, 29 Sep 2025 05:30:39 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=387438

On September 18th, 2025, the Perficient Bangalore office was filled with excitement and fun. The day was dedicated to celebration, recognition and competition – combining the threads of culture/sport and team spirit. It was a three-in-one day with our Onam celebrations, the prize distribution ceremony of our sports champions (Chess and Badminton) , and the much anticipated Perficient Cricket League (PCL) Season 3 player auction.

A Floral Welcome:  Onam Celebrations

The day started off beautifully and traditionally. Our colleagues created a beautiful ‘Pookalam’, a lovely and colourful rangoli made of flowers, at the entrance of the office to welcome everyone. Pookalam signifies the arrival of the legendary King Mahabali during the Onam festival season. The whole office was decorated with flowers, creating a festive atmosphere right away. The celebration was made even more special by the presence of our VP, Prakash Chembai along with GM Sumantra Nandi who joined us for the festivities.

The major attraction of the celebration was a captivating ‘Thiruvathirakali’ performance by the female colleagues at Perficient. Thiruvathirakali  is a traditional, elegant dance from Kerala,  performed on classic songs and bhajanas in a circular fashion as part of religious ritual. All of the female staff in fabulous Kerala saree outfits with jasmine flowers in their hair performed with pure grace. The performance was a lovely exhibition of coordination and teamwork, and we value that collaborative spirit at our workplace. Prakash appreciated the performance and participants for this great coordination and presented the participants with chocolates for their  wonderful performance.

Celebrating Our Champions: Prize Distribution

After the cultural showcase concluded, it was time to recognize the champions of our recent chess and badminton tournaments. A high competitive spirit was there, and it was exciting to see our colleagues compete and win outside their work environments. Our General Manager Sumantra Nandi and VP Prakash distributed the prizes to the winners.

Congratulations to all the winners!

PCL Season 3 – Clash of Titans Auction

After the lunch break, we gathered for the most awaited event of the day: the Perficient Cricket League (PCL) Season 3 Auction. With the theme “Clash of Titans,” the excitement was visible in all participants. Our auctioneer, Bijoy, took the stage as team owners, each loaded with a purse of 6000 Perficient Monies, prepared to build their dream teams.

Below were the six teams battling for the title:

  1. Perficient Tigers (Team Abhijit)
  2. Masters of the Game (Team Sumantra)
  3. Lunar Legends (Team Nandini)                                                                                                     Ocbpcl3 Ocbpcl2
  4. Perficient Challengers (Team Keerthi)
  5. Perficient Warriors (Team Venkat)
  6. Perficient Pinnacles (Team Harsha)

It was incredibly exciting and fun to watch the strategic bidding, see the demand for certain players soar, and witness the friendly rivalries come to life. The highest bid of the day went to Manoj Kumar Uppuluri, who was picked up by Masters of the Game for a whopping 2800 Perficient Monies!

With the teams finalized, everyone geared up for the tournament which was held on September 25, 2025. Practice sessions over the weekend were already planned and executed which was completely visible on the match day.

Conclusion

As the events wrapped up with tasty snacks provided by the office, colleagues resumed their work with renewed energy and smiling faces. It was a fun-filled day that served as a perfect, quick escape from our hectic schedules.

One Team, One Breath: Celebrating International Yoga Day at Perficient Nagpur & Pune https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/07/22/one-team-one-breath-celebrating-international-yoga-day-at-perficient-nagpur-pune/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/07/22/one-team-one-breath-celebrating-international-yoga-day-at-perficient-nagpur-pune/#respond Tue, 22 Jul 2025 07:38:38 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=384748

The Yogic Way

What happens when ancient mindfulness practices meet a modern workplace? You get International Yoga Day at Perficient – a thoughtful pause in the middle of our fast-paced workday, filled with movement, calm, and connection.

Yoga, not just a term, not even a physical practice: it’s a celebration of harmony between the mind, body, and spirit. Its beauty lies in its simplicity, just a breath, a stretch, a moment of awareness and yet its impact runs deep, purifying our thoughts, strengthening our inner self, and nurturing emotional resilience.

We experienced the same when we welcomed yoga into our office on the International Yoga Day. With many thoughts and discussions, meetings and on-floor preparations, we celebrated this International Yoga the- The Yogic Way at both Nagpur and Pune offices. From subtle stretches to intentional breathing, it was a shared moment of grounding that left a lasting impression. Organized under the Women in Tech India ERG, the event was a thoughtful blend of mindfulness, creativity, and community spirit.

Yoga for Everyone, Everywhere

At our Nagpur office, the celebration started in a refreshing way across every floor with a serene 20-minute experience. No yoga mats, no complex postures, same workspace, familiar chairs, and movements anyone could enjoy right from their desks.

We dimmed the lights, played gentle, calming music, and the environment become part of the flow. The Yoga instructor guided us through stretches, mindful breaths, and poses perfect for the workplace. Shoulder rolls that melted away stress, twists that aligned the spine, neck releases – small movements that made a big difference.

At our Pune office, we hosted a 45-minute yoga session for everyone right at their workstations. A refreshing 45-minute yoga session that blended chair yoga, stretching exercises, Surya Namaskar, and meditation – offering a perfect mid-day reset to boost both physical vitality and mental clarity. The session was thoughtfully designed to accommodate all fitness levels, making it easy for everyone to participate and benefit. From energizing stretches to calming mindfulness practices, the experience helped reduce stress, improve posture, and foster a sense of balance and well-being.

Despite packed schedules, people joined in with genuine enthusiasm. There was curiosity, laughter, a bit of wobbling, and plenty of smiles. Whether someone was trying yoga for the first time or reconnecting with an old habit, the vibe was relaxed, inclusive, and deeply refreshing.

A Blend of Wellness and Creativity

To complement the physical practice of yoga, we also invited teams to reflect on what balance and mindfulness meant to them – creatively. Our Poster + Photo Submission Activity was open to everyone, and the idea was simple to submit:

  • Yoga Asana Photo Showcase: A photo of themself striking their favorite yoga pose
  • Yoga Facts: A fun or insightful fact about yoga or how it’s benefited their well-being
  • Poster Making: A handmade poster or banner that captures the essence of yoga and balance

The submissions were vibrant, heartfelt, and filled with personality. Some colleagues sent in photos striking warrior or tree poses, while others channeled their artistic side through colorful, thoughtful posters. There were wellness quotes, breathing tips, hand-drawn asanas — even doodles of their Yoga Day experience.

The photo boards quickly filled up and turned into mini-inspiration corners in both offices — a refreshing reminder of how wellness can be fun, personal, and proudly on display.

Voices from the Event: Little Wins, Big Impact

To capture the spirit of the day, here are a few reflections shared by our colleagues from Nagpur and Pune:

  • Sachit Naik, Senior Technical Consultant: I really enjoyed the sense of community and calm at the event. Practicing yoga in the office with so many people created a powerful and peaceful energy that was truly uplifting.
  • Punyaa Dixit, Intern Consulting: As an intern, this was my first time participating in an International Yoga Day celebration at the office, and it was truly refreshing! It reminded me how important it is to move around and include simple exercises in our daily routine – especially during long workdays.
  • Kriti Gupta, Technical Consultant: It was refreshing to see so many colleagues come together with such positive energy. My key takeaway was how just a few minutes of stretching and focused breathing can make a big difference in our day-to-day wellbeing
  • Chinmay Dhuri, Senior Technical Consultant: I don’t regularly practice yoga, but attending the Yoga Day session was a truly refreshing and valuable experience. The session gave me a glimpse into the benefits of yoga, not just physically but also mentally. I’m grateful for the opportunity and it has definitely inspired me to consider including yoga in my routine.

Unified Message of Balance and Unity

The theme of the event was simple yet powerful: Yoga Day.  This celebration wasn’t about mastering yoga. It was about showing up – with curiosity, presence, and a willingness to pause. It served as a reminder that yoga is more than just physical movement – it’s a practice that nurtures mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being. It was about reminding ourselves that wellness doesn’t require fancy gear or hours of time. Sometimes, all it takes is a chair, a deep breath, a stretch, and a little intention.

This celebration was more than just a session – it was a reflection of Perficient’s people-first culture and the impact of employee-led initiatives like WIT India ERG. By creating space for wellness, connection, and creativity, we continue to build a workplace where everyone feels supported – not just in what they do, but in who they are.

Motherhood and Career Balance in Tech: Stories from Perficient LATAM https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/05/19/motherhood-and-career-balance-in-tech-stories-from-perficient-latam/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/05/19/motherhood-and-career-balance-in-tech-stories-from-perficient-latam/#comments Mon, 19 May 2025 15:22:27 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=381575

Motherhood and career balance in tech is more than a buzzword — it’s a lived experience for women across Latin America. At Perficient, we opened an unfiltered conversation where working moms shared the invisible challenges, emotional weight, and victories that come with raising a family while building a career in tech.

Held in honor of Mother’s Day, this heartfelt conversation brought together working mothers across Latin America who opened up about the often-unspoken struggles, emotional pressures, and small victories of navigating their careers and their role as moms.

What made this event stand out wasn’t polished answers or picture-perfect success stories. It was honesty.

“You’re Doing the Best You Can, and That Should Be Enough.”

From Colombia to Mexico, our panelists shared deeply personal journeys. Laura, a director and mother of two, spoke of the fear she felt when she first became pregnant — the silent worry that years of professional growth might suddenly vanish. Ana, a Business Analyst and new mom, reflected on the internal pressure to be “perfect” at both work and motherhood, only to realize the cost came at her own well-being. And Yelitza, a project manager, reminded us how unrealistic media portrayals of motherhood can be — and how important it is to protect our emotional space from harmful comparisons.

One powerful moment came when Ana admitted something that hit home for many in the audience: “We try to work like we don’t have children, and parent like we don’t have a job.” It perfectly captured the impossible standards placed on modern working mothers, especially in a fast-paced industry like tech.

Redefining Motherhood and Career Balance in Tech

Many of our speakers talked about guilt — the kind that shows up when you arrive late to your child’s event, or when you step away from your screen to take a breath. But they also talked about reclaiming joy in small ways: buying clothes that fit your new body with pride, finding five quiet minutes for yourself, or simply accepting that chaos is part of the journey.

Laura confessed that despite having two children, she still struggles to carve out time for exercise. But instead of giving up, she’s learning to integrate movement into family routines. “Sometimes the win isn’t in doing it perfectly, but in simply doing your best—with love, grace, and honesty,” she shared.

How Perficient Supports Motherhood and Career Balance in Tech

At Perficient, we don’t just host conversations — we listen, we learn, and we act. Forums like Motherhood Unfiltered reflect our deep commitment to building a workplace where every employee feels valued, heard, and supported — not just as professionals, but as people.

We know that creating a culture of inclusion means recognizing the invisible work that happens outside of the office — caregiving, mental load, and emotional labor. And it means supporting our employees in ways that are flexible, empathetic, and humane.

From Employee Resource Groups like Women in Tech, to career growth programs, mental health support, and flexible work policies, we’re proud to walk alongside our people through every chapter of their journey.
Because at Perficient, we believe that when you support the person, you empower the professional.

Responding to Client Feedback https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/04/28/responding-to-client-feedback/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/04/28/responding-to-client-feedback/#respond Tue, 29 Apr 2025 01:49:26 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=380688

Building on my last post about Delighting the Customer, let’s dive into how to respond to client feedback. A strong feedback loop is mission critical. To keep your client relationships at their best, you need to know what they are thinking.

Soliciting Formal Feedback

You need to be intentional about requesting feedback regularly and systematically.

At Perficient, we use a system called “Client Insights” to gather feedback throughout the project lifecycle. During onboarding, the project manager sets up automated feedback requests for key client contacts on a set cadence. Our goal is to get actionable feedback regularly from multiple people.

For my projects, I aim for quarterly requests and rotate contacts to avoid overwhelming anyone. The frequency and recipients depend on the project size and client’s team structure.

Insights from Informal Feedback

While our Client Insights system handles formal feedback, we don’t rely on automation alone.

Poor communication is one of the five obtrusive blockers to being a great servant leader. Informal feedback offers a different angle, because some clients skip automated requests or hold back negative comments to avoid conflict.

You can ask them for feedback informally anytime, whether that be one-on-one calls, emails, or chats. Some clients may open up more in private. Remember to also document and share informal feedback.

Receiving Positive Feedback

Positive feedback feels great, but don’t get complacent. Always take action. Share the kudos with your team. Everyone plays a part, so make sure they know they’re appreciated.

Then, don’t be obvious, but probe for constructive input anyway. Try something like, “That’s great to hear! I’m glad things are going well. But I aim for continual improvement, so are you sure there’s nothing small we could do better?”

Receiving Negative Feedback

Whether formal or informal, receive negative feedback graciously. Thank the client for sharing their perspective and assure them you’ll use it to strengthen the team. Give them confidence you’ll handle their input appropriately. Clients don’t want their feedback to cause strain on their relationships with the team. Offer to keep it anonymous and tailor how you share it with your team to avoid hurt feelings.

Leaders need the full details, but others only need actionable feedback. Instead of saying, “Bill thinks you don’t know what you’re doing,” try, “The client feels we might be spinning our wheels. What can we do to get back on track?” This softens the impact and aims for collaboration. As your teammate shares their perspective it allows you to say something like, “That sounds smart. Let’s aim to catch this sooner next time.”

Leadership’s Role in Feedback

We know client feedback is mission critical. Leaders should make sure formal feedback processes are in place, easy to use, and gather information that’s actionable. They should regularly review the feedback documentation and reports, watching trends over time.

Leaders can set goals for business units, smaller teams, and individuals. If a serious problem pops up, they might need to make tough calls like swapping out resources or even letting go of poor performers. Tough conversations can’t be avoided.

Lastly, leadership should share aggregated feedback data so everyone understands the types of feedback coming in. At Perficient, this happens in regular town hall meetings by each business unit. It gives everyone a baseline on how we’re doing, helps spot trends, and lets individuals compare their own experiences against the average.

A Personal Example

About a year ago, I helped onboard a new client. They were excited for a change from their previous agency but came with some built-in frustrations about their website’s platform and solution.

At the three-month mark, our Client Insights program received the first formal input. I knew there was some tension, but I was surprised when they gave us a one-star rating. Their comments were clear: they felt our team was slow, our hourly estimates were higher than they expected, and sometimes it seemed like we didn’t remember what they told us. Ouch! That’s not typical for us, and it was tough to hear.

The leadership team and I used some of the methods I mentioned earlier. We decomposed requests into smaller pieces and took a crawl, walk, run approach with bigger requests. With the client’s approval, we agreed to exclude QA and deploy hours from ticket estimates since that seemed to inflate sizing. Most importantly, we asked the client to help by making sure tickets had all the info, including screenshots, and our team made sure to ask for missing details immediately.

After that first negative review, the next feedback jumped to three stars! Most recently, we’re at four stars, with the client saying Perficient is becoming the partner they wanted. That is great to see! But we still have that last star to earn…and we will.

Conclusion

Client feedback is key to building strong relationships. Doing it right helps avoid surprises and solves problems early. It helps you understand what matters most to the client and each person on their team. With that, you build trust by following through and always aiming to improve.

Getting a perfect review feels awesome. A bad one? Not so much. But it can be satisfying to help your team bounce back and turn things around. Sometimes, though, ratings drop and things just don’t click. That’s a clear sign something needs to change. And sometimes, the required change might just be you.

When that happens, ask for help. Get advice from leadership, take some training, and work on improving yourself to better serve your clients. Start by assuming the problem is yours, then build from there.

⚡ PERFATHON 2025 – Hackathon at Perficient 👩‍💻 https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/04/15/perfathon-2025-the-hackathon-at-perficient/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/04/15/perfathon-2025-the-hackathon-at-perficient/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 20:30:48 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=380047

April 10–11, 2025, marked an exciting milestone for Perficient India as we hosted our hackathon – Perfathon 2025. Held at our Bangalore office, this thrilling, high-energy event ran non-stop from 12 PM on April 10 to 4 PM on April 11, bringing together 6 enthusiastic teams, creative minds, and some truly impactful ideas.

Setting the Stage

The excitement wasn’t just limited to the two days — the buzz began a week in advance, with teasers and prep that got everyone curious and pumped. The organizing team went all out to set the vibe right from the moment we stepped in — from vibrant decoration and  music to cool Perfathon hoodies and high spirits all around.

Perf5 Perf6 Perf11 Perf25

Our General Manager, Sumantra Nandi, kicked off the event with inspiring words and warm introductions to the teams, setting the tone for what would be a fierce, friendly, and collaborative code fest.

Meet the Gladiators

Six teams, each with 3–5 members, jumped into this coding battleground:

  • Bro Code

  • Code Red

  • Ctrl Alt Defeat

  • Code Wizards

  • The Tech Titans

  • Black Pearl

Each team was given the freedom to either pick a curated list of internal problem statements or come up with their own. Some of the challenge themes included:  Internal Idea & Innovation Hub, Skills & Project Matchmaker , Ready to Integrate AI Package etc. The open-ended format allowed teams to think outside the box, pick what resonated with them, and own the solution-building process.

 Let the Hacking Begin!

Using a chit system, teams were randomly assigned dedicated spaces to work from, and the presentation order was decided — adding an element of surprise and fun!

Day 1 saw intense brainstorming, constant collaboration, design sprints, and non-stop coding. Teams powered through challenges, pivoted when needed, and showcased problem-solving spirit.

Evaluation with Impact

Everyone presented their solutions to our esteemed judges, who evaluated them across several crucial dimensions: tech stack used, task distribution among team members, solution complexity, optimization and relevance, future scope and real-world impact, scalability and deployment plans, UI designs, AI component etc.

The judging wasn’t just about scoring — it was about constructive insights. Judges offered thought-provoking feedback and suggestions, pushing teams to reflect more deeply on their solutions and discover new layers of improvement. A heartfelt thank you to each judge for their valuable time and perspectives.

This marked the official beginning of the code battle — from here on, it was about execution, collaboration, and pushing through to build something meaningful.

Time to Shine (Day 2)

As Day 2 commenced, the teams picked up right where they left off — crushing it with creativity and clean code. The GitHub repository was set up by the organizing team, allowing all code commits and pushes to be tracked live right from the start of the event. The Final Showdown kicked off around 4 PM on April 11, with the spotlight on each team to demo their working prototypes.

A team representative collected chits to decide the final presentation order. In the audience this time were not just internal leaders, but also a special client guest , Sravan Vashista, (IT CX Director and IT Country GM, Keysight Technologies) and our GM Sumantra Nandi, adding more weight to the final judgment.

Each team presented with full energy, integrated judge and audience feedback, and answered queries with clarity and confidence. The tension was real, and the performances were exceptional.

 And the Winners Are…

Before the grand prize distribution, our guest speaker, Sravan Vashista delivered an insightful and encouraging address. He applauded the energy in the room, appreciated the quality of solutions, and emphasized the importance of owning challenges and solving from within. The prize distribution was a celebration in itself — beaming faces, loud cheers, proud smiles, and a sense of fulfillment that only comes from doing something truly impactful.

After two action-packed days of code, creativity, and collaboration , it was finally time to crown our champions.

🥇 Code Red emerged victorious as the Perfathon 2025 Champions, thanks to their standout performance, technical depth, clear problem-solving approach, and powerful teamwork.

🥈 Code Wizards claimed the First Runners-Up spot with their solution and thoughtful execution.

🥉 Black Pearl took home the Second Runners-Up title, impressing everyone with their strong team synergy.

Each team received trophies and appreciation, but more importantly, they took home the experience of being real solution creators.

Delighting the Client https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/03/26/delighting-the-client/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/03/26/delighting-the-client/#respond Thu, 27 Mar 2025 04:39:56 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=379334

In the last decade, “delighting the customer” has been quite popular in digital marketing. Clients have focused on user experience both online and offline. A delighted customer becomes loyal with brand affinity and drives long-term growth through positive word-of-mouth.

At Perficient, we manage two levels of delight: our clients and their customers. By delighting their customers, we also delight our clients.

In this article, I’ll share best practices for delighting clients and how to foster client feedback when they are not delighted.

Quote from John Lydgate about not being able to please all the people all of the time.

Intentional Empathy

Treat others as you would want to be treated – intentionally. Listen to understand, then repeat back what you heard for validation. This approach helps you support the client’s goals rather than imposing your will. Your reactions to their comments speak volumes, so aim to be seen as a true partner.

Optimistic Realism

While we want to maintain a positive outlook, it’s important not to be overly optimistic. Clients seek reassurance that their partner is capable and ready to help. However, we must remain realistic. Overpromising can lead to dissatisfaction, so start with positivity then address potential challenges and how to mitigate them. North Star Goals fit nicely within this mindset.

Transparent Caution

You win grace with clients through transparency, but it’s important not to alarm them. You want to be open and honest at all times, but there is no need to overwhelm them with your fears and opinions. Overdoing it can create doubt, so be mindful of how you share feelings versus facts.

Six Delightful Wins

Here are some practical tips I use to delight clients:

  • Start with a quick response. Don’t wait a week to reply. A basic question asked too late is embarrassing. You don’t want the client to feel unimportant.
  • Send updates sooner than later. Hope is not a strategy. If things might go off track, warn the client right away. It’s better to overcommunicate and adjust later if they prefer less.
  • Look for an initial fix, then a permanent solution. Clients appreciate speedy fixes. Identify the true pain point and see if there’s an immediate solution. You can always follow up with a more permanent fix later.
  • Assume you are wrong. I like to say, “Assume the problem is yours, then prove otherwise.” This shows ownership and prevents defensiveness, which can waste the client’s time.
  • Celebrate. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. People love to be celebrated and recognized. Spread positivity within the team and to the client to give everyone a reason to smile.
  • Apologize. Apologies are free! If you miss something or handle a situation poorly, own up to it. Most clients will appreciate your humility and good intentions.

When the Client is Not Delighted

We don’t live in a perfect world, and it’s impossible to please everyone all the time. We’re fallible humans, and so we’ll continually struggle to meet these standards despite having the principles in place. It’s the pursuit of greatness that counts.

Sometimes, a client may simply be hard to please, or plans may fall apart. You might be overwhelmed with other work, or the team may not be the right fit for the task. Life happens, and there are many valid reasons for an unhappy client, despite your best efforts.

In these situations, it’s crucial to have a solid client feedback loop. This allows clients to voice their concerns safely, without fear of hurt feelings or repercussions. While you may have reasons for falling short, avoid becoming defensive. Instead, embrace the criticism and turn it into something constructive. Treat it as a lesson learned, adjust accordingly, and strive for continuous improvement.

Embracing Joy and Empowerment https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/03/15/embracing-joy-and-empowerment/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/03/15/embracing-joy-and-empowerment/#respond Sat, 15 Mar 2025 12:24:19 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=378692

At Perficient, we believe that a lively and inclusive workplace is built on enjoyable moments, shared experiences, and a sense of community. From Christmas happiness to Sankranthi traditions and Women’s Day celebrations, our team created some wonderful memories in 2024 and early 2025. Let’s reflect on the love, laughter, and creativity that permeated our workplace during these memorable events!

Christmas Celebration 2024: Spreading Joy and Cheer

Though we’re a little late in sharing, our Christmas 2024 celebration was too memorable not to mention. The office was filled with holiday cheer as we gathered to commemorate the season of giving, generosity, and togetherness.

Our Secret Santa exchange, a timeless tradition, allowed everyone to spread holiday cheer in their own unique and personal way. The mystery of who was buying for whom heightened the excitement, and the thoughtful gifts presented resulted in many smiles and nice moments throughout the company.

Another enjoyable aspect of our celebration was decorating the office Christmas tree. Colleagues gathered to hang ornaments and lights, bringing a festive atmosphere to the workplace. It was a simple yet important exercise that put the Christmas spirit into action.

It was a lovely day of friendship and holiday enthusiasm that left us all feeling upbeat as we closed out the year.

Sankranthi Celebration: A Colourful and Traditional Fiesta

Sankranthi was a tremendous blast at Perficient! The event exemplified our diverse workplace by combining tradition, ingenuity, and team spirit. Here’s a glance at the interesting activities that made the day memorable:

Flower Rangoli Competition

To begin off the festivities, we hosted a floral rangoli competition, in which teams competed to produce vivid, detailed designs. Each team demonstrated their artistic abilities by creating gorgeous rangolis with bright flowers that illuminated the working space. The competition was fierce, and the winning teams received charming prizes as a sign of appreciation for their creativity and perseverance.

Traditional Attire and Best Dressed Awards

Employees were invited to dress in their best traditional attire, and the magnificent, bright clothes that everyone wore left us in awe. To add to the enjoyment, we launched a “Best Dressed of the Day” contest in which employees voted on the most stylish and culturally authentic outfits. It was a visual feast, and the winners proudly took home some wonderful prizes!

Kite Making

Without kites, what would Sankranthi be? Teams created and built their own kites at a kite-making session, giving workers a hands-on experience. It was a fantastic, practical experience that made the day even more exciting.

Women’s Day Celebration 2025: Honouring the Women at Perficient

The International Women’s Day event at Perficient was incredibly touching as we entered 2025. The focus of the day was to honour and recognise the incredible women that contribute to our workplace on a daily basis.

The environment was filled with energy as we hosted a series of interactive games and team-building activities. Everyone was able to connect while honouring the outstanding accomplishments made by women in our organization thanks to these enjoyable challenges. It was a day full of giggles, collaboration, and playful competition!

The day began with a wonderful session on how to meditate and keep calm while juggling the responsibilities of life and work at a workshop held by BK Lakshmi Ben Brahma Kumari. She provided useful strategies for integrating meditation into our everyday routines and underlined the significance of seeking inner peace amid the commotion outside. She asserts that real equilibrium arises from realising the link between inner tranquility and external action. Whether at work, at home, or in any other area, we bring a sense of peace and clarity to all we do when we are spiritually centered. She reminded us that maintaining long-term success and fulfillment requires making time for introspection and developing a calm mind, not as an extravagance. The wisdom of BK Lakshmi inspires us to cultivate our inner and professional well-being in order to establish a harmonic balance that enables women to flourish in all facets of life.

Along with it some fun and interesting activities aimed to bring everyone together. We started out with a spirited game of Charades, but with a twist! Instead of the typical movie or theme-based charades, we concentrated on films that highlight women or have been made specifically to honour women’s tales. The energy was totally contagious!

Sweet touches are essential to any celebration, and our Women’s Day party was no exception. We assembled as the clock struck noon for the much anticipated cake-cutting ceremony. The cake was an exquisite work of art that combined creativity and mystery with a connection to magic and spirituality.

The day was also filled with thoughtful surprises for the women. They were each given a lovely goodie box consisting of goodies and small presents to show their appreciation. They were reminded of their significance and the impact their contributions have on those around them by these small presents.

These occasions have given us numerous chances to unite, commemorate customs, and make priceless memories. From the joyous celebrations of Sankranthi to the festive cheer of Christmas and the empowerment experienced on Women’s Day, each occasion offered a distinct delight. These occasions serve as a reminder of the value of harmony, gratitude, and the unique times that unite our community.

Women’s Day Celebrations 2025 at the Perficient Towers https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/03/10/womens-day-celebrations-2025-at-the-perficient-towers/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/03/10/womens-day-celebrations-2025-at-the-perficient-towers/#comments Mon, 10 Mar 2025 08:43:07 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=378300

“Who run the world? Girls!” Beyonce said it best. Women’s Day Celebration 2025 is a standout event, enjoyed by all. The dress code theme for this year was Pink/Lavender attire for women and Green/Blue attire for men.

The office was lit up with confident smiles as our ladies showcased stylish outfits paired with matching accessories and shoes. Everyone put in tremendous effort to make this day special. From the start, we knew it would be a fun-filled, memorable occasion.

Dedicate a Song – Express Yourself

Employees had a chance to request their favorite songs on the jukebox/karaoke, dedicating them to their friends and family. The event felt like listening to a nostalgic playlist, bringing back cherished memories. As we grooved to the music, dedicating songs to our peers strengthened our sense of belonging. By the end of the day, all that mattered was relaxing and enjoying the moment—everything else fell into place.

Surprise Events

Speaking of relaxation, the team set up a mini salon on the second floor. Services included relaxing foot, neck, and shoulder massages to melt away stress. There was also a Mehendi corner for beautiful henna designs, a nail art station, and an eyebrow threading section—giving us the royal treatment we deserved. Laughter and chatter filled the air as everyone indulged in self-care.

Perficient Up Town

After the salon, it was time for some shopping! Retail therapy is a favorite for many, and with the rise of online shopping, we often forget the joy of experiencing products firsthand. To support women entrepreneurs, various stalls were set up, offering gorgeous sarees, dresses, handbags, accessories, and children’s clothing.

It was delightful to see men shopping for their families, while women tried on different accessories and debated their choices with friends. To beat the heat, refreshing tender coconut water was served—a thoughtful touch to keep everyone hydrated while celebrating.

Refreshing Snacks and Beverages

As the day came to a close, a delightful surprise awaited us on the ground floor. A traditional tea shop setup, complete with wooden benches, newspapers, and boiling kettles, created a cozy atmosphere. The spread included samosas, butter biscuits, and piping hot ginger tea (chai). A chat corner served delicious pani puri, an iconic Indian street snack. Enjoying these treats with colleagues made the experience even more special.

Conclusion

International Women’s Day (IWD), observed globally on March 8th, highlights the ongoing fight for gender equality. It fosters a sense of unity – and at Chennai Towers, the celebration went above and beyond the embodying of that spirit!

Adding to the excitement, Perficient was nominated for an EX-Impact Award in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) category – a testament to our commitment to creating an inclusive workplace.

Highlights from the Women in Digital Breakfast at Sitecore Symposium 2024 https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/02/14/highlights-from-our-women-in-digital-breakfast-at-sitecore-symposium-2024/ https://blogs.perficient.com/2025/02/14/highlights-from-our-women-in-digital-breakfast-at-sitecore-symposium-2024/#respond Fri, 14 Feb 2025 20:24:14 +0000 https://blogs.perficient.com/?p=377188

Looking back on the first-ever Women in Digital Breakfast at Sitecore Symposium, we had an inspiring and impactful gathering focused on empowerment, leadership, and allyship in the digital industry. The goal was to celebrate the achievements of women and provide a platform for them to share their thoughts and experiences from an industry that is constantly evolving.

Featured Speakers:

  • Moderator: Megan Mueller Jensen, Portfolio Specialist, Perficient
  • Panelist: Kathie Johnson, Chief Marketing Officer, Sitecore
  • Panelist: Ashley Spiro, Global Head of Website Factory
  • Panelist: Elycia Arendt, Director of Application Development, National Marrow Donor Program

There was no shortage of meaningful discussions during the event. Below are a few of the memorable moments and key takeaways from the panelists about the importance of allyship, redefining success, and practical steps for change.

Watch the Highlights

  1. Allyship Matters

While the event celebrated women in digital, the presence of male allies who attended was emphasized as crucial to progress. Supporting female colleagues, amplifying their voices, and advocating for inclusivity are key actions that drive real change.

  1. Creating a More Equitable Workplace

Panelists highlighted the importance of supporting women in leadership roles and rethinking hiring and promotion practices, showing that challenging existing processes is both necessary and valuable. Simple yet powerful changes such as ensuring diverse interview pools and fostering mentorship can make a lasting impact.

  1. The Power of Community and Giving Back

Instead of traditional event swag, donations were made on behalf of those in attendance to the American Cancer Society in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This gesture reinforced the importance of purpose-driven initiatives in the corporate space while supporting and championing the women in our lives who have been impacted by breast cancer.Screenshot 2025 02 14 001204

  1. Reshaping Definitions of Success

Success isn’t just about titles and promotions but about making an impact. The panelists shared how their definition of success has evolved, highlighting the importance of fulfillment, mentorship, and work-life balance. They emphasized the power of leadership that inspires and supports others, encouraging professionals to be the kind of managers they once wished for in their own careers.

  1. Supporting Women Re-Entering the Workforce

The pandemic had a disproportionate impact on women, many of whom were forced to leave the workforce to care for children, aging parents, or other relatives. Technology provides a strong opportunity for these individuals to re-enter the workforce and companies should make a concerted effort to actively welcome and support returning women, offering flexibility and resources to help them succeed.

  1. Authenticity and Confidence in Leadership

Women frequently hesitate to take credit for their achievements, often downplaying their success. This underscores the need for cultural change that encourages women to confidently own their accomplishments and push for equal recognition. The panelists encouraged attendees to own their success, advocate for themselves, and challenge outdated perceptions of leadership. Women need to take up space and be proud of what they’ve achieved while also acknowledging the contributions of others.Wid Overview

  1. Practical Steps for Change

Attendees were urged to take tangible actions, such as:

  • Speaking up for female colleagues, whether they are present or not.
  • Encouraging women to apply for leadership roles.
  • Recognizing and addressing unconscious biases in hiring and promotions.
  • Offering flexibility to caregivers and parents.

The panel served as a powerful reminder that collective efforts can drive meaningful change. By fostering inclusivity and championing one another, we can shape a more equitable and dynamic digital industry.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Women in Digital panel at Sitecore Symposium 2025 in Orlando!
