Hi, I’m Eric Enge, Principal for the Digital Marketing business unit at Perficient. I want to talk to you about why you need to begin preparing for the post-COVID-19 era.
Recognizing major disruptive events in the market is not often that easy to do. For example, COVID-19 came upon us so quickly that you may have found adapting your business difficult to do in a timely manner. Many businesses, of course, suffered greatly and had to close or lay people off. That’s the harsh reality. But for some businesses, new opportunities emerged to help people during these trying times — typically with things like helping people deal with boredom like online entertainment or online gaming sites; helping people stay connected with friends through video sites, messaging sites, and related applications; providing access to healthcare services such as in-home nursing care or clinician staffing; enhancing shopping online to help people get what they need without having to brave the stores; and delivery-to-your-home services, with things that you would want to be delivered to your home rather than having to go to stores.
If you can capitalize on these types of things and these ways to help people, you still should. But I want you to think about the next stage, too. What happens when COVID-19 gets under control? What will happen then? What trends that were driven by shelter-in-place mentality will become permanent? Here are some ideas for you. The move towards buying online has greatly accelerated. While people will eventually go back to shopping in stores, they will do so less than they did before COVID-19 came upon us. And, of course, many people bought exercise equipment, and they brought it into their home to help them stay fit during these times. Some of them will cancel their gym memberships and continue to work out at home. And virtual happy hours became a big thing. It’s a great way to stay connected when you can’t connect in real life. These are just examples of the many changes that were set in motion.
What are the permanent shifts in the marketplace that will impact your business going forward? Now is the time to work on answering that question.
