In today’s Daily Standup, we interview Karen Ramirez, an up-and-coming Performance Engineer at Perficient Latin America.

How long have you been at Perficient Latin America?

 6 months – I really really like it.

What are your biggest professional challenges?

As a performance engineer it’s really difficult sometimes. It’s not like being a developer where you have to learn how to develop in different languages and within different architectures. Or like an automation engineer, when you have to learn how to automate. Or even as a DevOps specialist, and you have to learn all about DevOps. Those roles have more clearly defined challenges and components that should be learned.

As a performance engineer, you have to know a little bit of everything. You have to be aware of architectures, programming languages, DevOps for performance, and think as a whole in performance engineering. You have to learn a lot of things, but also take into account the normal challenges when learning a new technology or process.

What’s your favorite game?

Mario Kart. One of our co workers has a Nintendo Switch so we get to play sometimes.

What’s the coolest, newest, most interesting thing you’ve recently learned?

I learned how to use python libraries to create statistical models to predict and analyze performance results.

What would you say to a person that is considering working at Perficient Latin America?

  1. You have to work a lot, it’s not like other jobs where you work 4 hours and the rest of the hours you are doing whatever you want. The rhythm of work is different because the international clients work differently, and most of our clients are from San Francisco. I like that because you have to push yourself to learn more.I always also explain to everyone, that it is a lot of work, but you are not obligated to do all of this work by yourself. Also, you are so engaged in the work that you don’t mind doing it.
  2. You can learn a lot of things from anyone here [at Perficient Latin America]. There is always someone that wants to teach something. There are a lot of open spaces where you can discuss, and have the opportunity to put together new insights. For example, I presented at a Lunch and learn and before that I lead a study group meeting.
  3. Sometimes people are afraid to leave their jobs and make a change, but if you don’t leave that comfort zone, you won’t learn anything and you are always going to have the same knowledge. In a career that is based on technology, you cannot allow yourself to avoid learning or leaving your comfort zone.

What do you like to do outside of work?

 I like to go to the gym.
