Cloud Computing Adoption Continues to Surge in 2018

At Perficient, we’re all about having our pulse on the state of technology and the trends impacting business. Around this time of the year, we look out for surveys, including RightScale’s State of the Cloud Report. A regular fixture in the technology community, this particular survey answers burning questions around cloud adoption, usage, and anticipated strategy for the coming year ahead.

This year’s report is out and we combed it over. Here are some of the takeaways that we consider important:

Multi-Cloud Strategies are Becoming Reality

According to the report, organizations are now spreading their investments across multiple cloud providers, an increase of 3% from the previous year. Correlated with this trend is also the declining adoption of hybrid cloud, a strategy that became popular in recent years. We believe that this trend indicates that organizations are seeing the benefits of cloud and trust public cloud providers more than ever before.

Public Cloud Usage Continues Steady Growth

With the growth of multi-cloud, RightScale also saw a correlation with public cloud, which saw a 7% increase compared to the previous year and also corroborated by IDC earlier this year. The market stands to transform with fewer organizations storing and managing their applications on private cloud.

Databases are #1 in the Cloud

What’s old is new again, and that’s the case with databases in the cloud. According to the survey, 44% voted relational databases as the top public cloud service they use, inclusive of managed database services and self-hosted workloads running in virtual machines. As big data and artificial intelligence (AI) become a staple of organizations, we expect database public cloud service adoption to increase.

Kubernetes is the Preferred Container Tool

Containers are trending, especially as organizations look to optimize their application development and testing. Though industry watchers have known for a while, RightScale’s survey confirmed that Kubernetes was the leading container tool, with 38% adoption. The other alternatives mostly have a single digit adoption rate. You can find out how to learn Kubernetes here.

The Market is Diversifying

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is still king, but competitors are coming into the fold with Microsoft Azure, IBM, and Google Cloud growing considerably. As costs continue to drop and each vendor adds value to their platforms, this competition will only grow fiercer. The best part? Perficient is partners with all three.

The Takeaway

With this information in mind, cloud solutions are poised to make a big leap this year, particularly with public cloud and the underlying applications. Many of our customers are coming to us not only looking to adopt cloud solutions, but also build within.
