I am majoring in Computer Science and will be a senior at Ball State University in the fall. As I pursued summer internships earlier this year, my dad gave me some advice.
He told me to pick three places that would be my dream internship and apply to them, even if I thought I might not get in. He called them “swing for the fences” internships.
How I Discovered Perficient
I attended a career fair at Ball State, and my experience with Perficient was fun and very enjoyable. One of the recruiters happened to be a Ball State alumni and former classmate, so it felt like I was catching up with an old friend. We chatted about our current areas of interest and my study into the educational applications for virtual reality. It did help that the recruiter was a classmate. But his enthusiasm for working at Perficient was what really solidified my interest in the company.
After we talked about my studies, the recruiter asked to see my resume. He seemed almost as equally excited to tell me about Perficient as I was to tell him about my studies.
Getting My Foot in the Door
Fortunately, I got the internship. I joined the Digital Commerce department and worked as a developer on the Magento eCommerce platform. I did some back-end and front-end work on various projects. I developed a custom Magento 2 Model for a project that might be used on the production site.

After being an intern for three weeks, I was comfortable enough to give useful ideas in meetings and actually help with the topic at hand. I got a feel for what it is like to be a developer outside of the classroom and understanding for how consulting work is done. All in all, the experience was a home run.
