The healthcare industry is inundated with data and with the adoption of EHRs, the acceleration of wearables, harnessing of Big Data and the rise of genomics and personalized medicine the industry will continue to see a deluge of data. Efficient and effective management of this data requires organizations to be able to generate timely and actionable insights to improve care and lower healthcare costs. In many cases this will require healthcare organizations to identify new solutions involving the cloud. Regulatory and security concerns have slowed the adoption of cloud technologies but according to a report by MarketsnndMarkets, more organizations are ready to move past those concerns. The report predicts the healthcare cloud computing market will grow from $3.73 billion in 2015 to $9.48 billion by 2020.

Data storage is not the only reason organizations are driving towards the cloud in healthcare. The cloud also pushes to advance interoperability, a critical initiative throughout the industry. And it drives mobile data access, security and payment reform. The cloud makes data more accessible and allows organizations to generate a complete view of the individuals and populations they serve.

Traditionally, hospitals and health plans have been slower to adopt the cloud when compared to other industries but in the last five years there has been a large move to the cloud. The MarketsandMarkets report predicts that by 2017, 20% of the healthcare industry will be doing some kind of cloud computing, up from 4%.

Cloud is an essential component of digital transformation and we will see healthcare organizations making the move to the cloud, through 100% cloud solutions and hybrid cloud solutions. The transition of EHRs to the cloud will provide better care across the continuum and the cloud and Big Data will provide better analytics to improve patient care and population health and reduce healthcare costs.
