The only benefit would be referral traffic. As Mark pointed out, no PR.

If by “SEO benefit” you mean that links from it pass ranking authority, then, no. The links are all no-followed (as they are on Pinterest, so not sure what you mean for that either).

Collections seems like an untapped opportunity. Any insights?

I enjoyed reading your post and this is my first time I learned about Google Plus. You managed to describe all the features of the Google + so I can easily discuss this information with others. Perhaps, our life is built on such a principle: despite of the fact the Google Plus is Google’s new social network, all the people still hesitate to start using it because they already have a Facebook account. But there was a time when people learned and faced with a Facebook. It is worth thinking about it.

Sendy, you asked why Google needed to do Google+. Initially the vision was to try to get everyone to create personal and brand profiles, and they hoped, to engage with others via them. That would give Google access to the kind of information that only Facebook has now at any massive scale.
Today I think the goals are humbler. I can’t know what they all are, but I think one might be that Google+ is a good playground and testing platform for their developing artificial intelligence capabilities.

Maybe you can try something else! But thanks for your post, I have a great possibility to know about a new possibility of Google marketing! It is very interesting for me, why they need to do Goodle Plus and what is it?!
