Intel Data Center Strategies at Oracle OpenWorld 2015

Intel’s CEO Brian Krzanich defined four areas of focus for their enterprise data center efforts.  These are important areas for Oracle and Intel to get ahead of the market because of the exploding cloud and data landscape.

Make it Easy

The cloud will deliver great benefits, but why is it taking so long to transition to cloud solutions? Intel says the complexities of data centers, networks and the cloud are all too much right now.  Earlier this year Intel announced Cloud for all.  Today, Intel announced Project Apollo which is a scaled version of Oracle’s Cloud.  Doug Fisher from Oracle talked about Project Apollo, which has goal of reducing complexity and creating efficiencies.  In the environment they created 1500 VMMs, measured the baseline and then improve the performance of the workload by 50%.  They also reduced the variance in the workload performance by 10x.  This allows companies to provision a consistent and predictable cloud.  Apollo is going to deliver blueprints to customers so they can take advantage of all the knowledge that Intel and Oracle gained.

Make it Perform (at peak levels)

Intel said that Oracle applications running on Intel hardware is the most performant platform available.   Intel and Oracle announced a program called “Exa to Power” to migrate systems from other vendors to Oracle/Intel solutions.  They said the performance can be 10x to 20x performance. Oracle is offering a free proof of concept where they will help a customer move a workload to Exa to demonstrate the performance improvements.

Make it Compelling

What you do with data is what’s important.  There is a growing amount of data but usage of data varies greatly by company and industry.  Intel is working on real-time data analytics.  Adoption of Apache Spark has been slow due to its complexity and lack of skills in the market.  Intel recently introduced Streaming SQL to make it easier for SQL developers and business analysts to tap into Apache Spark.  Intel also introduced

TAP

TAP – Trusted Analytics Platform – that is open source for analytics. They talked about how TAP is being used in the medical field to analyze huge amounts of data streaming in from wearables, labs, doctors offices and surveys.

Make it Secure

Intel has a vision for end-to-end security – from the data center to the private data a person owns.  Brian talked about securing data, including the sharing of data, plus securing the data center itself.  Obviously security is a major factor for all companies.
