I think you are right. As large and well trafficed sites react much better to the device a person uses and even the context of the visit, ALL users will come to expect this behavior.

I would also propose, we have either reached the point or are about to surpass the threshold where sophisticated users are expecting a different experience on their tablet than their phone and their compute. This makes strategy around what is important to the users in each setting (in an emergency withe their phone, sitting in the waiting room of the car dealership with their tablet or sitting at home exploring on their home computer) that much more crucial to adoption.
