Cognos TM1 Users – Calculation of Concurrent Users

The number of concurrent users is significant when determining architecture for a TM1 model. To determine the number of concurrent users your TM1 model must support, each user must be assigned a weighting. To determine the weighting of a user you will need to determine the “type” of that user. All users will be categorized as being a member of 1 of three basic “user types”. These types are “power users”, “planners” and “reporters”.

Power (or Admin) Users

Power users are logged into TM1 for the majority of the day. They load data, update models and objects, and create complex reports and views. These users will calculate concurrency at 100% or 1:1.

Planners

Your “planners” require read/write access and will update data in the model on a regular basis. They also create/view complex reports and views. Planners will calculate concurrency at 33% or 3:1.

Reporters

The Future of Big Data

With some guidance, you can craft a data platform that is right for your organization’s needs and gets the most return from your data capital.

Get the Guide

Reporter are read only users and do not generally enter any data. They use pre-defined reports in Excel or TM1 Web but will require fast access to data. These users calculate concurrency at only 10% or 10:1.

Concurrent User Calculation

Based upon the above, if your total user community is to consist of 500 users and it broke down as 25 power users, 225 planners and 250 reporters, the math would be:

Time Zones

Additionally, you may want to factor in the effect of “time zoned users”, that is understanding that if some of your users are located in different time zones, they all (most likely) will not be logged into the model at the same time which will further reduce your concurrent user total.

Until next time…

Thoughts on “Cognos TM1 Users – Calculation of Concurrent Users”

  1. Hello Jim,

    Thank you for this information.
I am looking for a way to audit how many users I currently have in TM1.
Is there a tool or something within TM1 that we can view how many users have access? Along with any meta data on the users. Create dates, logins….
    Thank you, Dave
