Designing for the Future

In his post Time to Give Up on Controlling Our Designs, Jonathan Smiley says that what we need to know about designing for the future is: “You will never know what device someone will use to view your website, or read your content.” He goes on to say that there will be so many permutations of devices, screen sizes, aspect ratios, DPI settings, colors available, and technologies used that we should abandon the idea that we are in control of presentation. He encourages us to, “Start thinking about how what you’re working on holds up when you let go of the pixels.”

Mr. Smiley wrote a follow-up post with some tips for designing without pixels, and promises more details in upcoming posts. He concludes this post with, “It’s not just pixels that make up great web design, it’s considered interactions, and solid benefits, and empowering users to do what they need to do on whatever device is at hand. That’s how we’ll design for the future.
