Bottoms Up Adoption

Erin Eschen put me on to an interesting article Krishnan Subrumanian cloudcave.  The premise of the article is that things like open source and the cloud started out small and at the lower end of organizations and then built up a very respectable set of users………many times taking management by surprise.

Here’s two cents on the topic: Everywhere I go I see people asking about the cloud.  I see adoption coming quickly. Some companies are actually pushing this from above but in many cases, it’s the people who need something fast that are going around IT to meet those needs.  At Perficient, I see colleagues not going around IT but using cloud options for a variety of uses.

  • Our education practice has images ready to go for their classes.  No setup involved.   If you have internet access, you just take on image and clone if 6 times for a 6 person class.  When you are done, dump the images but keep your original.
  • Our ECM practice always has demos and proof of concept type work.  Getting our clients data centers to support this or getting our back office can take time.  They are pushing towards using Amazon EC2 to give them more speed and flexibility.

The article is worth a read. If you are in IT, don’t be surprised when your business users go to the cloud.  If you are in business, you already know you have options to increase business velocity.

The same trend is happening on the public cloud computing space too. Bernard Golden of Hyperstratus has written/spoken on this trend and he argues that many CIOs and other managers are completely unaware of the fact that developers in their organization are using public clouds inside their teams and departments. He also points to the similarity with Open Source adoption inside the enterprises.
