Many of our Portal clients face the same dilemma:  They are implementing a new portal platform, but need to bring content into portal from a variety of places.  In most of these situations, they have an existing content management system that they can’t (or won’t) migrate into portal’s CMS.

Last month I blogged about how to integrate external content with WebSphere Portal (see http://blogs.perficient.com/portals/2011/02/22/options-for-integrating-external-content-with-portal/).   I just came across an article in CMSWire titled 4 Ways to Integrate External Content with SharePoint 2010 by Michal Pisarek that I want to share with you.

Michal highlights the following four ways to bring content into SharePoint:

1. Use SharePoint’s Business Connectivity Services – this is a new feature of SharePoint 2010 that builds on previous versions of Business Data Catalog.
2. Web Services are included with SharePoint allowing external systems to used REST-based methods to access and post to SharePoint.
3. Client Object Models – SharePoint includes three new Client Object Models: ECMAScript, SilverLight, and .Net Managed clients.
4. Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) – CMIS is a new specification created by several large CMS vendors including IBM, Microsoft, EMC and others to allow content repositories to be accessed using a services approach.
