Microsoft’s SharePoint has become the de facto collaboration solution leveraged by most companies today. In fact Gartner states that 60% of companies are using SharePoint.  With its user-friendly interface and growing features SharePoint has grown into strong player in the ECM space, however in certain areas customers still need the power of a traditional ECM platform that can provide high volume transactional content management and a solution with a compliance focus. This has been more so the case when a customer is in a highly regulated industry or is heavily content focused. To cover all the bases and provide all the needed functionality, this has led to the idea of building a hybrid solution composed of SharePoint and a Traditional ECM platform.
To bridge the gap EMC created a hybrid solution based on the EMC Documentum platform that allows for the best of both worlds which is called  “SDF”  SharePoint Documentum Framework. With over 80 deployments and 150,000 seats in use worldwide, it is composed of a set of web parts, data services, and an SDK that allows the EMC Documentum system with SharePoint to operate seamlessly. Giving the customer the basic functionality needed for integration with the ability to build out the solution to do more, is the true value of this offering. Previously products that existed failed as they were not flexible enough to deliver what customers needed. Exposing content and core ECM features to SharePoint from EMC Documentum has been simplified and with the Single Sign-on integration which makes this a much sought out solution specifically for those customers that own both SharePoint and EMC Documentum. Not only does it allow for Documentum content to be exposed to, linked or copied from SharePoint, but allows for integration with Information Rights Management, Documentum and SharePoint Workflows, and Records Management.
