Three keys to HIE Sustainability

by on October 26th, 2009

Billions of dollars are being granted, gifted, and invested in Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) across the country.   A previous Commonwealth Study that appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine estimated $178 billion will be needed to create regional and national networks.

With all that said, very few Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) have achieved a business/operating model that is sustainable without significant ongoing grants and subsidies.

In my opinion there are three keys to creating a sustainable HIE:

Behind The Tweet: Using Microsoft HealthVault to Provide Consumer Data Access

by on October 26th, 2009

As an active participant in the Twitter Healthcare community I often want to know more about what my fellow participants tweet.  Over the coming months I’d like to go behind the tweet and take the opportunity to learn more.  Sam Adams (@1samadams), Manager Enterprise Software Engineering of BayCare Health System (www.BayCare.org) graciously agreed to share BayCare’s approach for enhancing patient experience leveraging technology with me. Early EHR (EMR, CPR…) development focused on delivery of complex products that were designed to manage every task in a provider setting.  Work flow features were especially complex and have had a lot to do with the large number of early failures in this space.  The design process at that time revolved around a “do everything” philosophy.  Not to say that there weren’t some folks preaching a different religion – but for the most part you saw complex products, requiring heavy duty hardware and large implementation projects.
