ExxonMobil, the largest publicly traded international oil and gas company, is now leveraging the cloud in a revolutionary way: With ExxonMobil’s new Speedpass+ app, you can pay for gas at Exxon- and Mobil-branded locations using Apple Pay, a simple and safe way to pay within the app. Just open the app and your location is automatically identified through your phone’s geo-location feature. If the GPS features is turned off, simply scan the QR card on the pump. Next, choose your pump number and pay with your fingerprint, a biometric authentication method that is quickly becoming popular among financial intuitions, such as Bank of America and HSBC. Lastly, print a paper receipt or track the purchase via the app. Voila!

In addition to Apple Pay, Speedpass+ app users can pay separately with credit cards, debits cards, ExxonMobil Personal Cards, ExxonMobil Smart Cards, and checking accounts.

The ability to purchase through the Speedpass+ app “…has been designed to save you time at the pump,” said Matt Bergeron, vice president of fuels and lubricants marketing at ExxonMobil, according to a company press release.

In a time in which organizations are rushing to adopt new technologies to meet today’s consumer expectations, ExxonMobil is an example of an “old” company focused on leading the way through digital transformation.

Apple Pay is currently available at several thousand locations and will be deployed at more than 8,000 Exxon- and Mobil-branded stores by the end of the year, making it the first gas company to adopt mobile payments at such an expansive level.
